Keiki young and old have an opportunity to broaden their horizons and their minds
through two special programs offered this summer by KIUC. Four high school
students have earned the opportunity of a lifetime by winning an allexpensepaid
trip to Washington, D.C. Exiting fifthgraders have a chance to spend two weeks
having a blast while learning all about electricity.
Since the early 1960s, the Washington Youth
Tour (WYT)—sponsored by the National Rural
Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA)—has
drawn more than 1,300 high school students to
Washington, D.C., each year.
Students learn about electric cooperatives,
American history and U.S. government. They
attend educational seminars, visit with their
representatives in the U.S. House and Senate, and
see the sights around Washington, D.C.
During the WYT, each state delegation selects
a representative to the Youth Leadership Council
(YLC), which builds leadership and public
speaking skills, and enhances the delegates’
knowledge of the energy industry and the
cooperative form of business.
Students have the opportunity to make
presentations at cooperative meetings, and are
invited to attend and participate in the NRECA
Annual Meeting. The YLC selects a national
spokesperson to address members at the NRECA
Annual Meeting and the Youth Tour delegates the
following year.
