Keiki young and old have an opportunity to broaden their horizons and their minds through two special programs offered this summer by KIUC. Four high school students have earned the opportunity of a lifetime by winning an allexpensepaid trip to Washington, D.C. Exiting fifthgraders have a chance to spend two weeks having a blast while learning all about electricity. Since the early 1960s, the Washington Youth Tour (WYT)—sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA)—has drawn more than 1,300 high school students to Washington, D.C., each year. Students learn about electric cooperatives, American history and U.S. government. They attend educational seminars, visit with their representatives in the U.S. House and Senate, and see the sights around Washington, D.C. During the WYT, each state delegation selects a representative to the Youth Leadership Council (YLC), which builds leadership and public speaking skills, and enhances the delegates’ knowledge of the energy industry and the cooperative form of business. Students have the opportunity to make presentations at cooperative meetings, and are invited to attend and participate in the NRECA Annual Meeting. The YLC selects a national spokesperson to address members at the NRECA Annual Meeting and the Youth Tour delegates the following year. Interested in participating in the 2011 trip? Energy Does Work Building off the success of last summer’s pilot program, KIUC will host exiting fifthgraders during a twoweek program designed to give the next generation of energy consumers the tools and inspiration needed to use energy responsibility. Through handson activities, experiments, guest speakers and tours of facilities, young people will be educated on the importance of energy efficiency and conservation. The curriculum—which was developed by local teacher Traci Sullivan, and taught not only by educators but KIUC staff—covers the following concepts: • What Is Energy? • Forms and Transformations of Energy • The Energy Problem • Energy Choices • Energy Efficiency • Renewable Forms of Energy Trey Delos Reyes and Saedy Tumaneng play the Guess Who electricity game. The 11 students from eight schools who participated last year played energy games, built hydrogen cars, constructed Lego windmills and visited the power plant in Port Allen. They worked together to problem solve and came to conclusions about energy, including how we use it and what our energy future might look like. They presented what they learned and wrote reports featured in Currents magazine. They also blogged about the program, and continue to blog. “Students named their program Zetetic Analyzers of Power Sources (ZAPS) and the name stuck,” said Maile Moriguchi, Community Relations Coordinator. “We’re now calling the program KIUC ZAPS.” Interested in participating in this summer’s program?
