dents in Mechina: Kindergarten Prep<br />
enjoyed learning all about how police and<br />
firefighters work to keep people safe. Every<br />
year, Mechina students “star” in a video<br />
based on what they learn about people in<br />
their communities, and the video is then<br />
shown to the students and their parents.<br />

HAITIAN RELIEF. When a devastating<br />
earthquake struck Haiti, Davis Academy<br />
3rd-graders took the lead in collecting more<br />
than $1,300 to help the people of that small<br />
country. Pictured is one of the many posters<br />
drawn by Davis 3rd-graders and posted<br />
around school to encourage students to give<br />
generously to this important and worthy<br />
cause.<br />

out of a pool of<br />
69,000 applicants.<br />
Later this spring, the foundation will grant<br />
53 finalists $20,000 national scholarships<br />
for college and 200 finalists $<strong>10</strong>,000<br />
regional scholarships.<br />

Scholarship, a semifinalist<br />

the competition. A finalist may then be eligible<br />
for a scholarship based on academic<br />
record, two sets of test scores, a school official’s<br />
written recommendation, information<br />
about the student’s activities and leadership,<br />
and the finalist’s own essay.<br />
SOOTHING SMOOTHIES. Weber School<br />

Womenetics, a<br />
national/international<br />
web magazine.<br />
Daniel was recognized<br />
for his work<br />
with Smoothie Kidz, a teen-run, nonprofit<br />
service organization that delivers smoothies<br />
to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.<br />
Because of publicity Smoothie Kidz has<br />
received, the organization now has the<br />
financial backing of Atlanta-based franchise<br />
operation Planet Smoothie.<br />
GO RAMS! <strong>The</strong> Weber School’s varsity<br />
boys basketball team has advanced to the<br />
state tournament. This is the first-ever<br />
GISA (Georgia Independent School<br />
Association) state tournament appearance<br />
for Weber boys basketball.<br />
COVENANT FOUNDATION HONORS<br />
ROSENBLIT. <strong>The</strong> Covenant Foundation,<br />
which honors outstanding <strong>Jewish</strong> educators,<br />
recently profiled Weber teacher Barbara<br />
Rosenblit. <strong>The</strong> foundation recognized her<br />
for adDRESSING Women’s Lives, her<br />
innovative project that pairs each student in<br />
her History of <strong>Jewish</strong> Women in America<br />
class with a senior woman. After conducting<br />
interviews, the student then creates a<br />
dress that reflects the woman’s importance<br />
to her family and her community.<br />
MENTORING FUTURE JEWISH EDU-<br />
CATORS. Two Pardes Institute of <strong>Jewish</strong><br />
Studies students, Jordana (Joey) Heyman<br />
and <strong>Mar</strong>c Silberstein, are currently interning<br />
at <strong>The</strong> Weber School. <strong>The</strong>se master of<br />
education candidates have been studying in<br />
Israel for the last two years and are training<br />
to become Judaics teachers in North<br />
America. As part of Weber’s ongoing relationship<br />
with Pardes, Barbara Rosenblit and<br />
the Judaics staff work with the interns,<br />
allowing them to observe classes and teach<br />
several Judaics courses.<br />
PURIM. Greenfield Hebrew Academy held<br />
a fantastic Purim Celebration and Carnival<br />
in which everyone enjoyed a costume<br />
parade, moon bounces, and games.<br />

SIDDUR CELEBRATION. GHA 1stgraders<br />
received their first siddur at the<br />
Siddur Celebration in February. Student<br />
Bootsie Glasser (pictured with teacher<br />
Cheryl Tobin) is continuing a great family<br />
tradition at GHA. At the celebration, the<br />
sidder Bootsie received was the same siddur<br />
her mother, Adele, received 36 years ago at<br />
GHA. Bootsie, named for her grandmother<br />
Bootsie Siegel, is the 17th child in the<br />
Siegel family to receive a siddur at GHA.<br />
MATHCOUNTS. GHA was one of 60<br />
schools represented in the Atlanta area<br />
MATHCOUNTS competition in February.<br />
GHA’s team (pictured) ranked 16th out of<br />
the 55 competing teams, and Ben Valenta<br />
ranked 71st out of 355 individual mathletes.<br />
GHA team members are 8th-graders Tova<br />
Beeber, Justin Seligson, Joey Siegel, Ben<br />
Valenta, and Josh Weissmann, and 7thgraders<br />
Davis Apseloff, Harrison Gildar,<br />
and Ilan Palte.<br />
ECD’S HEALTHY TREATS. In Healthy<br />
Foundations (Nutrition), GHA Early<br />
Childhood Department (ECD) students<br />
have been making dried fruit using their<br />

WOLMER SELECTED BY COLLEGE<br />
BOARD. Al Wolmer, head of the Math<br />
Department at Yeshiva Atlanta High<br />
School, has been selected by the College<br />
Board to be an exam reader for this year’s<br />
AP Calculus exams. Mr. Wolmer, along<br />
with other invited high school and college<br />
calculus teachers, will score the free<br />
response questions. Students scoring high<br />
enough on these exams may be given college<br />
credit for their work.<br />
MERIT AWARD WINNERS. YA has two<br />
20<strong>10</strong> Georgia Certificate of Merit Award<br />
students, Sarah Harpaz and Shira<br />
Weissmann. This award identifies and<br />
rewards superior scholastic endeavors<br />
through outstanding achievement in the first<br />
three years of high school, in hope that such<br />
recognition will result in even greater academic<br />
effort and full pursuit of a formal<br />
program of higher education.
