13) Player “D” serves points 14 and 15 (left then right)<br />

14) Alternate players on alternate teams will continue to<br />

alternate two serves apiece until one team establishes a<br />

margin of two (2) points<br />

15) Teams change ends for one game to start the next set with<br />

“C & D” to serve the fi rst game of the new set.<br />

16) The set shall be recorded as 7 games to 6. The tie-breaker<br />

game shall count as one game for the ball change, except<br />

that, if the balls are due to be changed at the beginning<br />

of the tie-breaker, the change shall be deferred until the<br />

second game of the following set.<br />

3) Ties in Team Scoring for Individual Play<br />

a) In team scoring at the region tournament (2 singles and 2<br />

doubles), if there is a tie for the champion position, it shall<br />

be broken.<br />

b) In the case of a tie in team points to determine region<br />

tournament champion, the playoff shall be scheduled<br />

immediately following Region <strong>Tournament</strong> play. It is the<br />

coach’s responsibility to have his/her team on-site ready to<br />

play.<br />

c) A brief rest period may be designated by the <strong>Tournament</strong><br />

Manager if necessary. In the event of inclement weather or<br />

darkness, the region manager may schedule the playoff for<br />

the following day.<br />

d) Any region tournament ties for state tournament individual<br />

qualifying positions shall be broken.<br />

e) In the case of a tie in team points to determine the region<br />

champion, the team(s) tied for fi rst who does not win<br />

the tie-break procedures will be runner-up; the team(s)<br />

that accumulated second-most points during the region<br />

tournament, when there is a tie for fi rst but is not in the tiebreak,<br />

will fi nish third and is not the runner-up.<br />

B) Team Competition<br />

1) Region<br />

a) Points are awarded from 2 singles competitors and 2 doubles<br />

teams entered in tournament play.<br />

b) The team that scores the greatest number of points during the<br />

tournament shall be declared the team champion.<br />

2) Semi-<strong>State</strong> and <strong>State</strong><br />

a) The format shall be 3 singles and 2 doubles, best 2-3 with a<br />

12-point tie-break.<br />

b) The winner shall be declared with one team has won 3<br />

matches and all other play shall stop at that time.<br />

3) Region <strong>Tournament</strong> Winning Team Two-Way Tie-Break<br />

Procedure. In the case of a two-way tie in points for the team<br />

championship in the Region <strong>Tournament</strong>, the tie will be broken<br />

by the following:<br />

a) The team format shall be 3 singles matches and 2 doubles<br />

matches. Each match shall be a 2 out of 3 format.<br />

b) Each match counts 1 point with the fi rst team to 3 points<br />

being declared the winner. Once the winner is determined, all<br />

other play shall end.<br />

4) Region <strong>Tournament</strong> Winning Team Three-Way Tie-Break<br />

Procedure. In the case of a three-way tie in points for the team<br />

championship in the region tournament, the tied teams shall<br />

be ranked by the number of games won during the region<br />

tournament to determine the order of the tie-breaking matches.<br />

a) If this ranking results in a tie, it shall be broken by ranking<br />

the tied teams in order by the fewest number of games lost.<br />

b) If this ranking results in a tie, it shall be broken by a blind<br />

draw.<br />

5) Region <strong>Tournament</strong> Runner-up Two-Way Tie-Break<br />

In the case of a tie for second place for the team championship in<br />

the Region <strong>Tournament</strong>, the tie will be broken by the following:<br />

a) The team format shall be 3 singles matches and 2 doubles<br />

matches. Each match shall be a 2 out of 3 format.<br />

b) Each match counts 1 point with the fi rst team to 3 points<br />

being declared the winner. Once the winner is determined, all<br />

other play shall end.<br />

C) Trophies and Awards<br />

1) Region.<br />

a) Trophies will be given to the team winner and runner-up at<br />

each region.<br />

b) Awards will be given to winner through quarterfi nalist at<br />

each region meet.<br />

c) The Association will bear the costs of all trophies and awards<br />

at the region meet.<br />

2) <strong>State</strong>.<br />

a) Trophies will be awarded to the teams fi nishing fi rst and<br />

second, and the semi-fi nalists at the state tournament (these<br />

four teams are made up of the semi-state winners).<br />

b) Awards will be given to the winner through quarterfi nalist in<br />

Singles play at the state meet.<br />

c) Awards will be given to the winner through quarterfi nalist<br />

doubles teams at the state meet.<br />

d) The Association will bear the costs of all trophies and awards<br />

at the state tournament.<br />

VII) Finances, Passes<br />

A) Region/semi-state<br />

1) The fi nances of the region tournament will be managed at the<br />

region level.<br />

2) The region competing schools shall decide any distribution of<br />

net profi t/loss, which shall be shared.<br />

3) The fi nances of the Team semi-state tournament will be<br />

managed at the local semi-state level.<br />

B) <strong>State</strong><br />

1) The Association will fi nance the state tournament.<br />

2) <strong>School</strong>s are responsible for the expenses of competitors<br />

participating in the state tournament.<br />

VIII) Sport Specifi c Competition Rules<br />

A) Playing Rules<br />

1) All <strong>Tournament</strong>s shall be played using the rules as established<br />

by the United <strong>State</strong> Tennis Association unless modifi ed by the<br />

KHSAA.<br />

2) Additional rules otherwise developed by the KHSAA may<br />

be implemented in contests played in <strong>Kentucky</strong> and will be<br />

distributed to the membership when relevant.<br />

3) Detailed and binding instructions, both for managers and<br />

participating teams, shall be published on the KHSAA website.<br />

4) All match play in both individual singles and doubles shall be<br />

best two out of three sets..<br />

B) Specifi cations for Tennis Courts<br />

The specifi cations for recommended and required standards for<br />

tennis facilities to be used in tournament play may be developed<br />

by Association staff and Advisory Committees and approved by<br />

the Board of Control.<br />

C) Dress Code<br />

1) It is recommended that players wear school uniforms during<br />

play.<br />

2) The following shall NOT be allowed during tournament play:<br />

a) Visible undergarments under either shorts, skirts or shirts.<br />

Note: Compression shorts, if worn as an undergarment above<br />

the knee, are legal.<br />

b) Bare midriffs.<br />

c) Any garment or hat advertising alcohol, drugs, tobacco<br />

products or other inappropriate items deemed objectionable<br />

by the KHSAA <strong>State</strong> <strong>Tournament</strong> Director.<br />

d) Objectionable permanent body markings (tattoos) shall be<br />

covered; non-permanent body markings (temporary tattoos or<br />

body paint) shall be prohibited.<br />

e) Black-soled shoes are prohibited.<br />

D) Coaching in Region and <strong>State</strong><br />

Coaches designated on the KHSAA Region/<strong>State</strong> <strong>Tournament</strong><br />

Entry Form (Form TN #103 for Region and TN#104 for <strong>State</strong>), and<br />

approved by the school principal will be allowed to coach between<br />

points and any authorized rest/break period and should not delay<br />

play. Coaching is NOT permitted when the player changes ends<br />

during a tie-break game or during any warm-up period.<br />

E) Limit of Coaches<br />

More than one coach coaching at the same time during the same<br />

match is prohibited.<br />

F) Coach Communication<br />

1) The following standards are required for coach communication:<br />

a) Only the designated head coach or one assistant coach hired<br />

by the school may talk to the players. Parents may NOT talk to<br />

the players during these authorized periods.<br />

b) Once all championship tournament play is inside the Stadium<br />

Courts, all coaching shall be done on the court. Coaching from<br />
