metal, sensors, dental and medical
pro ducts, quartz glass, and specialty lighting
sources are the focus of our activities.
In 2007, we generated more than € 2.9 billion
in product revenues and € 9.3 billion in
trading revenue with more than 11,000
employees in over 100 subsidiaries.

Business Development
Against the backdrop of strong overall economic growth, business developed
exceptionally well for the Heraeus Group over the course of financial year 2007.
Particular momentum came from positive development in significant markets,
including the electronics and semiconductor, steel, chemical, and medical prod-
ucts industries. A sharp increase in prices for vital precious metals, especially
in the second half of 2007, coupled with Heraeus’ international presence in key
growth regions around the world further contributed to the Group’s positive busi-
ness development. Overall, the Heraeus Group is closing financial year 2007 with
new highs for revenues and earnings, including cash flow and financial position.
Product revenues increased by more than € 2.9 billion in 2007, exceeding the success
of the previous year by 8.2 %. Rising prices for precious metals and positive
business development in all of the Group’s significant product markets contributed
heavily to revenue growth. At € 9.3 billion, precious metal trading more or less
matched the level of the previous year. Strong price volatility opened up numerous
market opportunities, benefiting trading in key precious metals.

Group net income was thus € 210.3 million, an improvement of € 33.9 million over
the previous year, or 19.2 %.

The Heraeus Group grew by 600 employees worldwide, a gain of 5.3 % over the previ-
ous year. The total number of Heraeus employees around the world numbered 11,875
at the end of 2007 (previous year: 11,275). This growth is due largely to personnel ex-
pansion in Asia, where 234 employees were added, but 168 jobs were also created in
Germany. Ninety employees joined Heraeus through acquisitions of other companies.

innovaTivE fLux for prinTEd boards
Modern electronic circuits consist of many tiny components that are soldered to the appropriate
tracks with spheres containing tin alloys to form an electrical connection. The spheres must be
soldered to the component and can move on the substrate during the soldering process, creating
defects that reduce production yield and create expensive repairs of the component. An innovative
combination of flux and fine solder powder from W. C. Heraeus GmbH secures the spheres during
the soldering process and prevents them from rolling off the component. Leading Electronics
Packaging Company Amkor Technology makes good use of these advantages.

Our largest business segment processes the precious metals gold, silver, platinum,
and other platinum group metals, primarily to produce industrial products for the
automotive, semiconductor, electronics, and medical industries. A global network
of more than 30 companies includes production facilities for all phases of precious
metal production and refining. In addition, W. C. Heraeus holds a leading
international position in industrial precious metal trading.
The W. C. Heraeus business segment is relying on profitable growth in existing
and future markets, and in doing so benefits from a broad focus on key markets.
In 2007, nearly every division contributed to very positive development in earnings.
Fueled by a strong global economy, product revenue increased by 11.3 % in comparison
with the previous year, to € 1,852.9 million. Revenue from precious metal
trading remained approximately the same as in the previous year.

sEnsors improvE ThE quaLiTy of sTEEL
Ensuring the quality of molten steel and iron requires regular measurement of temperature
and chemical composition. Lance-shaped sensors from Heraeus Electro-Nite are used to
measure these parameters. These products range from disposable sensors to sensors that take
oxygen readings in a matter of seconds (Celox ® ), and from multifunctional sensors (Multi-Lance ® )
to sensors for continuous measurement (CasTemp ® ). The Corus steel plant in Ijmuiden, the
Netherlands, has been using these innovative sensors for years to take direct and rapid
measurements in molten steel.

The world market leader in sensors for the steel industry.
The expert for measurements in molten iron, steel, and aluminum operates 24
market-oriented companies on all continents for the production and distribution of
high-quality sensors. Heraeus Sensor Technology rounds out the product program
with platinum thin film elements for temperature sensors in household appliances
and for the semiconductor, electronics, and automotive industries.
Booming steel markets in China and Eastern Europe, as well as the increasing
use of environmentally friendly technologies in the automotive industry continue
to have a positive effect on sensor sales. World steel production rose again by
7.5 % over the previous year, to 1.3 billion tons, while in China alone, the growth
rate was 17 %. This means that prospects for high-quality sensors for the steel
industry have increased.

iq:nECT ® — ThE inTELLiGEnT ConnECTion
Heraeus Kulzer is setting a standard for dental implants with its novel IQ:NECT ® dental
implant system. IQ:NECT ® stands for “intelligent connection,” and dentists are embracing this
clever “click-to-connect” system. Conventional implants often require time-consuming and
complicated insertion and removal of screws. With IQ:NECT ® ’s innova tive clip mechanism, one
click is all it takes to securely attach the temporary components to the implant.

A globally positioned company in the fields of dentistry
and dental technology products.
The specialist for dental alloys and single-source provider of systems for the conservation
and restoration of natural teeth has an extensive product program for
dental laboratories and dentists, and also produces bone cements and biomaterials
for orthopedics and surgery. Heraeus Kulzer maintains a total of 20 companies in
Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australia to supply customers around the world
with innovative branded products.
The market for dental and medical products showed positive growth in 2007.
A good global economic situation, together with increased distribution and
marketing activities, led to an increase in sales. Heraeus Kulzer demonstrated
particularly strong sales growth during 2007 in Europe, especially in Spain.
We also generated higher revenues in North America, China, and Japan. Our sales
rose over the previous year by 2.8 %, to € 336.1 million.

suprasiL ® for miCroLiThoGraphy
Heraeus Quarzglas has supplied the optics company Carl Zeiss SMT with high-quality blanks of
quartz glass since 1989 for optics systems that use microlithography in industrial chip production.
Because the storage density and performance of microchips doubles every two years, new
generations of objective lenses are required to transmit ever finer structures. Synthetic quartz
glass must keep pace with these developments. Suprasil ® 501 represents an especially durable,
self-repairing generation of quartz glass which is used in the latest Carl Zeiss optics.

With comprehensive know-how and more than 13 production facilities in Europe,
Asia, and North America, this business segment produces and processes
high-purity fused silica for the optical, chemical, and semiconductor industries.
The product portfolio also includes synthetic silica glass for the manufacture of
microchips and for optical fibers for the telecommunications industry.
Financial year 2007 was marked by renewed demand in the first half of the year
for semiconductors, compared with the previous year. General economic cooling
in the second half of the year in the semiconductor industry led to a slight
re duction in sales for the remainder of the year, which still ended 1.9 % higher
than 2006, at € 265.0 million.

spECiaLTy Lamps for LasEr marKinG
Laser excitation lamps are gas discharge lamps, which are used in solid-state lasers for
industrial processes involving welding, cutting, and marking, as well as in medical applications.
Heraeus Noblelight is the technology leader in the manufacture of these lamps, constantly
improving the lifetimes, performance, and energy efficiency of its pulse and continuous wave lamps.
Renowned laser manufacturer Rofin-Sinar has benefited from Heraeus’ knowledge of
specialty lamps for years.

The company develops, manufactures, and markets infrared heaters and ultravio-
let lamps for applications in manufacturing, industrial process technology, environ-
mental protection, medicine and cosmetics, research, development, and analytics.
Heraeus Noblelight saw profitable growth in 2007. Starting from a high level
achieved in the previous year, sales grew to € 90.1 million, at a moderate 2.8 %,
compared with the previous year. The result was a continued upward trend.
A sound economic environment, innovative products, and the opening of new
markets all contributed to this positive business growth, which benefited almost
every division of the business segment. Heraeus Noblelight profited from the
success of its innovative products and the positive economic environment in 2007.
For instance, the UV technology for purifying water and air met with increasing
acceptance worldwide.
