Principal’s Message
It is hard to believe that we are already into the beginning of the fourth quarter. We are getting ready
for the administration of the Ohio Achievement Assessments. The Harding community has much to be
proud of in our past performance on these assessments. Our success is due in large part to the commitment
from parents, teacher and students to put forth their best each and every day. I feel confident that
all of our students will show continued growth on these tests as we prepare them for the 10 th grade
Ohio Graduation Test.
Please note the following dates for achievement tests this year.
6th grade
Reading—April 27
Math—April 29
Reading—April 28
Math--May 3
Please remember to make sure that your students have a healthy breakfast and get a good night’s sleep
before their exams. Please make sure that students are at school on time during testing. Students that
are absent or late will have the opportunity to make up missed exams.
We appreciate your continued support!
MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT:
IMPORTANT DISTRICTWIDE SURVEY COMING!
Lakewood City Schools will be conducting an important district wide survey on Thursday, April 7, and we
need your help in making it successful. The district is looking to determine the availability of reliable Internet
access in students’ homes. This information will help us in determining how we move forward with
more efficient and effective communication with families and students as well as explore other educational
opportunities.
If you have an email on file with the district, you will receive an email with a link to the one-question survey.
If you do not have an email on file, you will receive an automated phone call between 7-8 p.m. on
April 7 that will ask you one question. It is very important that we receive as high of participation as possible,
so please try to be available to answer this call.
If you do not receive an email or a phone call on April 7, you may go to the district web site at
www.lakewoodcityschools.org and take the quick survey.
As always, thank you for your support of Lakewood City Schools.
CENSUS SUCCESS!
Census data has been released and thanks to the hard work of many civic organizations, including
Lakewood City Schools, Lakewood has retained its federal entitlement status by staying above
the 50,000 mark in population. The official number of residents is 52,131.
Lakewood retaining its entitlement status was critical for our schools as money from this allocation
goes toward important programs for our students such as Title I, Head Start, special and adult education
and college grants and loans.
Thanks to the team work of so many of Lakewood’s non-profits, our school parent-teacher organizations,
and of course, the City of Lakewood, many of our students’ needs will continue to be served. The
collaboration between all with a stake in the outcome of the Census underscores the great partnerships we
have in Lakewood. The Census results are just another example that proves that strong communities build
strong schools. Thank you to everyone who made sure they were counted!
Sixth Grade News
Test Time is Growing Near
Teachers have been working
diligently to prepare your
child for the sixth-grade Ohio Achievement
Assessment. Your middle-schooler will
feel more prepared if he/she listens carefully
in class, does all homework and class
work, and stays organized by using his/her
plan book. Periodically, you might wish to
ask to see the plan book and check organization
skills.
More Learning to Follow
A full grading period remains, with many
exciting things to learn. Final year-end
grades consider all four grading periods.
Please continue to check your child’s planner
and/or contracts.
Materials Matter
Teachers would appreciate regular blue/
black ink pens and #2 pencils. However,
with a quarter of the school year remaining,
most students will need more pencils, paper,
pens, and coloring materials for the remaining
weeks. Please check with your
child to see if more supplies are
needed. We are also in need of
more tissues for classroom use.
It’s been a season filled with coughs, colds,
and flu, and our supplies are low. Thank
you for your help!
Read, Read, Read!
Were you careful to initial your
child’s ―Book It‖ calendar? One of
the best ways to learn to read is by
3
regular practice sessions. By providing this
quiet time for your child, you will play a major
role in his/her success as a reader. Although
the Book It program will be ending for
the school year, we hope that you will continue
to encourage your child to read in a
regular, enjoyable way.
Where Am I?
Which region of the world is your child
―visiting‖ now? Ask about what countries he/
she is learning about in Social Studies class.
Seventh Grade News
In Ms. Pollner’s social studies class after a
brief detour to the Middle East, Africa,
and Japan, we have returned to Western
Europe and are studying the Middle Ages.
Students will learn about the political system
(feudalism), the economic system
(manorialism), the role of the church, the
Crusades, and the Magna Carta.
In Ms. Pollner’s language arts class, students
continue to pull together the skills
learned during the year and practice for
the OAA test on April 28. We also completed
a short poetry review and wrote poems
about lighthouses. We continue
to work on grammar learning
to identify the subject(s) and verb
(s) in sentences in the hopes of reducing
sentence fragments and run-on
sentences. We also continue to work on
vocabulary skills focusing recently on
word relationships, figurative language,
and connotation/denotation. Reading logs
are due every Monday.
The students have been working very hard
in Mrs. Franks’ Language Arts class.
They finished their research paper with
much success. The students learned how
to place parenthetical citations in their paper.
This is often times a very difficult
concept to understand. The students have
chosen a novel they would like to read for
independent activities revolving around
literary elements. They have been writing
in their journals and each student has chosen
creative activities to complete in class.
HARDING MIDDLE SCHOOL TO SAVE
LIVES AGAIN!!
Students at Harding Middle school will once
again be teamed up with the American Red
Cross to sponsor participants for their ―pintsized
heroes‖ blood donation program.
Harding students attend an information assembly
on April 21 st during their homebase
time. During the following week they will
be asking parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents,
siblings, neighbors, or any adult over
17 years old to give of themselves to give to
others. They will sponsor these adults to donate
blood during our Harding blood drive
on Friday, May 13 th between 2 pm-7 pm.
Student will have cash and prize incentives
to sponsor donors. The student council will
be involved with scheduling and other manpower
duties to help make this year’s event
the best to date.
Last year students sponsored over 70 donors
which led to a yield of 56 usable pints. The
kids were then rewarded with a huge outdoor
hot dog and pop party during their
eighth period.
Parents, please help make this
year’s event another rousing success
by allowing your child to
sponsor you to donate.

Teachers who are ARRA grant recipients
continue to implement technology into their classrooms
via web 2.0 tools using active slate, active
expressions, ipods, and netbooks. Each teacher
has their classes on-line using Edmodo to communicate
lessons and content being taught. Edmodo is
an educational network that allows the teacher to
create lessons on-line and students are able to communicate
with the teacher and classmates through
this website. Some of the web 2.0 tools that we
have used include glogster, voice thread, comic
life, and prezi. The students are embracing this
educational opportunity!
Science classes are finishing up plate tectonics
and moving toward space and the universe in
class. At the same time they are reviewing for the
OAA exams coming up at the end of April. Many
students have also put their creative energies to use
in preparing for the science circus that is coming to
Harding on April 7 th from 6-8 pm. Mrs. Pesta's students
are designing carnival games and explaining
the science behind them. There will be a portable
planetarium with shows about the night sky and
several demonstrations done by 8th graders to show
how cool science can be, not to mention the popcorn
and cotton candy. The idea behind the circus
is to generate excitement and interest in science,
especially in elementary age kids.
Ten eighth graders competed in the Northeast
Ohio Science and Engineering Fair on
March 14-15th and made Harding proud. In
an upcoming competition, Victor Soukup is
entering his K'nex coaster in a competition at Cedar
Point for a chance to win free tickets and an opportunity
to display his work at Cedar Point's Physics
Days this May. He will be sending in a video of
his completed ride by April 3rd and will find out if
he wins in early May. Two 7th graders, Zeke Dalisky
and John Pizzo, have also entered a roller
coaster in this competition. Good luck to all!
Language Arts classes continue to work on
story elements through reading novels and short stories
as well as writing short stories. OAA prep continues
in all subjects!
In March, Mme. Grinnell’s French classes
celebrated Mardi Gras New Orleans-style! Students
watched video of parades, toured the Mardi Gras
world factory, listened to New Orleans jazz, donned
beads and masks, ate King Cake, and crowned a
Mardi Gras king and queen! Laissez les bons temps
rouler !!
Lakewood Strings Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event was held at Harding Middle School on Saturday,
February 19. Orchestra students from Garfield and Harding gave a total of 42 performances that afternoon.
All received a rating of I (superior) or II (excellent) on a judging scale of 1 to 5. This was the second
year Lakewood orchestra hosted its own stand alone competition. The benefits of hosting include: reduced
traveling for parents which allowed many of them to hear their child’s performance, LHS orchestra student
volunteers supporting our middle school students, and an easy to understand competition procedure. The
following is a list of Harding students who competed, their events and ratings:
Harding 8 th grader Jacob Corder has been named a national Gold Medal winner - the highest honor - in
the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writ-
ers, a national competition with more than 185,000 works submitted from more than 50,000 students
in grades 7-12 from across the nation.
Corder won his Gold Medal, which represents the most outstanding work in the na-
tion, in the Jewelry category for two pieces submitted together, a felted ring with metalwork base
and felted earrings. He will be honored along with the other national winners at a ceremony in May
at Carnegie Hall. The national winners were selected from the 1,500 that advanced from their re-
gional competitions in January.
Entries were judged by professionals in visual and literary arts and judged on the following criteria: originality, techni-
cal skill and emergence of personal vision or voice.
Corder’s pieces have special meaning to him as he created them as a tribute to his family. The
ring includes three felt ―hills‖ with faces that represent his mother, his sister and himself. The
earrings, one of which is a cloud with sunshine and the other a cloud with rain, are a tribute to
his mother.
―The cloud earrings represent good and bad times,‖ Corder said. ―My mom is a single mom and she’s gotten us
through a lot of good and bad times and these were a thank you to her.‖
And how does Mom feel about that? ―It reduced me to tears,‖ said Julie Corder. ―It was the most touching thing I’ve
ever heard.‖
Corder, who began taking art classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art at age 11, already has a few other significant art
accomplishments under his belt in addition to this most recent honor. He took second place for a silk painting he en-
tered when he was 11 at the Starry Night art exhibition held on the eve of the Lakewood Arts Festival and sold one of
his papier mache animal creations to Pioneer Savings Bank to hang in their lobby.
Many of Corder’s pieces can be found at Local Girl Gallery in Lakewood, which will be hosting a show of his work in
June.
In addition to Corder, two Lakewood High school students who were named Golden Key winners at the regional level
also had their work judged at the national level. Senior Peter Barlow won his regional Golden Key for a film titled
―Last Hope‖ and senior Danielle Curran for a painting titled ―Purple Hart.‖
The Scholastic Awards were founded in 1923 to offer recognition and scholarships for students for their artistic tal-
ents.
