Of equal importance in the RRG theory <strong>of</strong> complex sentences is the set <strong>of</strong> possible syntactic<br />

<strong>and</strong> semantic relations between the units in a juncture; the semantic relations are discussed below.<br />

The syntactic relations between units are called ‘nexus’ relations in RRG. Traditionally,<br />

only two basic nexus relations are recognized, coordination <strong>and</strong> subordination. Subordination is<br />

divided into two subtypes, daughter subordination <strong>and</strong> peripheral subordination. They are illustrated<br />

in Figure 8.<br />
