“<strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Religion</strong>”<br />

A <strong>Symposium</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Celebrate</strong> <strong>25</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Conversation on the Shape <strong>and</strong> Quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> our Common Life<br />

The founding <strong>of</strong> the Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Religion</strong> twenty-fi ve years ago opened an<br />

on-going, vibrant <strong>and</strong> wide-ranging conversation <strong>to</strong> explore the interaction <strong>and</strong><br />

intersection <strong>of</strong> law <strong>and</strong> religion in shaping <strong>and</strong> contributing <strong>to</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> our<br />

common life. This conversation has been interdisciplinary from the outset, but over<br />

the years it has increasingly drawn participants from the many religious traditions <strong>and</strong><br />

cultures found around the world. Today the Journal is an internationally respected<br />

forum within which scholars, “speaking <strong>of</strong> law <strong>and</strong> religion,” have been brought<br />

<strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> engage each other <strong>and</strong> the disciplines <strong>of</strong> law <strong>and</strong> religion. This dialogue<br />

has considered with utmost seriousness their joint responsibility, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>of</strong> these<br />

two disciplines, for the creation <strong>of</strong> a civilization <strong>of</strong> genuine peace <strong>and</strong><br />

justice in which all might fl ourish.<br />
