Lindenw d Miss ion Statement Lindenwood University offers values-centered programs leading to the development of the whole person – an educated, responsible citizen of a global community. Lindenwood is committed to • providing an integrative liberal arts curriculum, • offering professional and pre-professional degree programs, • focusing on the talents, interests, and future of the student, • supporting academic freedom and the unrestricted search for truth, • affording cultural enrichment to the surrounding community, • promoting ethical lifestyles, • developing adaptive thinking and problem-solving skills, • furthering lifelong learning. Lindenwood is an independent, public-serving liberal arts university that has a historical relationship with the Presbyterian Church and is fi rmly rooted in Judeo-Christian values. These values include belief in an ordered, purposeful universe, the dignity of work, the worth and integrity of the individual, the obligations and privileges of citizenship, and the primacy of the truth.
Mess age om e P sident Dear Friends, During a recent interview for one of Lindenwood’s many excellent publications, I was asked what philanthropy means to me. That was an interesting question, and it evoked a spate of thoughts. Here are just a few: Perceived need. I believe that gifts to universities and other nonprofi t institutions signify, fi rst and foremost, that the donor perceives a genuine need worthy of personal or corporate generosity. Institutional wherewithal. Gifts also represent the benefactor’s faith in the institution’s viability, strength, and permanence. The giver is acting upon a conviction that the organization will use the gift effectively, will be around for a long time, and will persist in fulfi lling the supported purpose. Regard for the institution. As well, the contributor possesses a positive disposition toward the recipient - that is, believes the organization has integrity, serves an important mission, and is performing well. Motivation to make a difference. Finally, the benefactor desires to make a positive change in the world by supporting a hospital, school, church, or social service agency that accomplishes particular purposes while furthering the greater good. I thank everyone listed in this Report for expressing such faith and confi dence in Lindenwood’s mission and future through the many generous gifts made in Fiscal 2010. While our roster of supporters grows annually, the repeated appearance of many donors’ names year after year strikes me as particularly indicative of our being on the right track. In that vein, I would especially like to thank our inimitable Board of Directors for once again participating in Lindenwood’s fundraising campaigns at the 100% level. Appreciation is also due our alumni, who substantially increased their giving rate over the past year, as well as our many staunch corporate donors and individual friends who made gifts to the University even during an economic downturn. Each year there are more signifi cant developments at the University than could even be mentioned in this letter, and many of them are made possible in part by the generosity and goodwill of our benefactors. A few examples include Lindenwood’s recent initiatives in intercollegiate athletics, the endowed emergency textbook fund, the single-parent program, the expanded Harmon Hall and Center for Business and Entrepreneurship, the high-tech Dunseth Auditorium in Harmon Hall, new campus art and sculpture, the Welcome Center at the Belleville campus, the remodeling of our fraternity and sorority meeting halls, and further plant and program improvements at the Boone Campus. It is fi tting that all of these donor-sponsored projects and programs ultimately enhance the higher education experience of our students. In response to and collaboration with your essential interest and support, we pledge to continue advancing this school in the best service of our mission and students.
