Miss ion Statement<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers values-centered programs leading to the development <strong>of</strong><br />

the whole person – an educated, responsible citizen <strong>of</strong> a global community.<br />

relationship with the Presbyterian Church and is fi rmly rooted in Judeo-Christian values.<br />

These values include belief in an ordered, purposeful universe, the dignity <strong>of</strong> work, the<br />

worth and integrity <strong>of</strong> the individual, the obligations and privileges <strong>of</strong> citizenship, and<br />

the primacy <strong>of</strong> the truth.

Mess age om e P sident<br />

Dear Friends,<br />

During a recent interview for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lindenwood</strong>’s many excellent<br />

publications, I was asked what philanthropy means to me. That was an<br />

interesting question, and it evoked a spate <strong>of</strong> thoughts. Here are just a<br />

few:<br />

Perceived need. I believe that gifts to universities and other nonpr<strong>of</strong>i t<br />

institutions signify, fi rst and foremost, that the donor perceives a genuine<br />

need worthy <strong>of</strong> personal or corporate generosity.<br />

Institutional wherewithal. Gifts also represent the benefactor’s faith in the<br />

institution’s viability, strength, and permanence. The giver is acting upon<br />

a conviction that the organization will use the gift effectively, will be around for a long time, and<br />

will persist in fulfi lling the supported purpose.<br />

Regard for the institution. As well, the contributor possesses a positive disposition toward the<br />

recipient - that is, believes the organization has integrity, serves an important mission, and is<br />

performing well.<br />

Motivation to make a difference. Finally, the benefactor desires to make a positive change in the<br />

world by supporting a hospital, school, church, or social service agency that accomplishes<br />

particular purposes while furthering the greater good.<br />

I thank everyone listed in this Report for expressing such faith and confi dence in <strong>Lindenwood</strong>’s<br />

mission and future through the many generous gifts made in Fiscal 2010. While our roster <strong>of</strong><br />

supporters grows annually, the repeated appearance <strong>of</strong> many donors’ names year after year strikes<br />

me as particularly indicative <strong>of</strong> our being on the right track. In that vein, I would especially like to<br />

thank our inimitable Board <strong>of</strong> Directors for once again participating in <strong>Lindenwood</strong>’s fundraising<br />

campaigns at the 100% level. Appreciation is also due our alumni, who substantially increased<br />

their giving rate over the past year, as well as our many staunch corporate donors and individual<br />

friends who made gifts to the <strong>University</strong> even during an economic downturn.<br />

Each year there are more signifi cant developments at the <strong>University</strong> than could even be mentioned<br />

in this letter, and many <strong>of</strong> them are made possible in part by the generosity and goodwill <strong>of</strong> our<br />

benefactors. A few examples include <strong>Lindenwood</strong>’s recent initiatives in intercollegiate athletics,<br />

the endowed emergency textbook fund, the single-parent program, the expanded Harmon Hall<br />

and Center for Business and Entrepreneurship, the high-tech Dunseth Auditorium in Harmon<br />

Hall, new campus art and sculpture, the Welcome Center at the Belleville campus, the remodeling<br />

<strong>of</strong> our fraternity and sorority meeting halls, and further plant and program improvements at the<br />

Boone Campus. It is fi tting that all <strong>of</strong> these donor-sponsored projects and programs ultimately<br />

enhance the higher education experience <strong>of</strong> our students.<br />

In response to and collaboration with your essential interest and support, we pledge to continue<br />

advancing this school in the best service <strong>of</strong> our mission and students. In the meantime, please<br />

continue sending us your thoughts, impressions, and suggestions.<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> has made quite a difference in<br />

the lives <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> students during its 183-year<br />

history. The opportunities that many <strong>of</strong> these students<br />

have received were made available through the<br />

generosity <strong>of</strong> alumni and friends who wanted to make<br />

a lasting gift to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

You, too, can impact a student’s life through a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> programs available to alumni and friends, such as<br />

the Endowed Scholarship or <strong>Honor</strong>s Award program.<br />

We currently have many established gift programs that<br />

help support students involved in the arts, education,<br />

sciences, communications, business, and other<br />

academic programs.<br />

GIVING OPTIONS<br />

Bequests<br />

A will is the easiest and most effective means to<br />

ensure that you provide for your family and that<br />

your assets will be distributed as you wish. Ask<br />

your financial advisor about bequest options and<br />

assistance.<br />

Appreciated Real Property<br />

Donations <strong>of</strong> appreciated property can provide both<br />

a generous contribution to <strong>Lindenwood</strong> and financial<br />

benefits for you.<br />

Gifts <strong>of</strong> Securities<br />

Transfer <strong>of</strong> stock and other appreciated securities to<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> can give you a substantial tax savings.<br />

<strong>Donors</strong> can receive an income tax deduction equal to<br />

the fair market value <strong>of</strong> the stock on the date <strong>of</strong> the<br />

gift — thus reducing your taxable capital gains.<br />

Charitable Gift Annuity<br />

This gift frees up your assets in order to generate<br />

current income to you during your lifetime. You<br />

make an initial gift to <strong>Lindenwood</strong> and then a<br />

set payment is paid during your lifetime or at a<br />

designated time, such as retirement.<br />

Charitable Remainder Trust<br />

This is a managed and invested trust that provides<br />

you and/or other beneficiaries you name with a<br />

stream <strong>of</strong> income for life or a period <strong>of</strong> years. Almost<br />

any asset can be used to fund the trust, and the trust<br />

can be tailored to suit your personal financial needs.<br />

A charitable remainder trust can have substantial tax<br />

benefits for you.<br />

Charitable Lead Trust<br />

This is almost the opposite <strong>of</strong> a charitable remainder<br />

trust. Instead <strong>of</strong> the donor’s receiving the income,<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> would receive the income for a<br />

specified number <strong>of</strong> years. At the end <strong>of</strong> the trust,<br />

the remaining principal is returned to you or another<br />

person <strong>of</strong> your choosing. You can potentially receive<br />

a charitable tax deduction for the percentage paid to<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong>.<br />

Life Insurance<br />

Either the donation <strong>of</strong> a fully or partially paid policy<br />

or the purchase <strong>of</strong> a new policy naming <strong>Lindenwood</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> as the beneficiary can lead to a substantial<br />

deduction for you and generous gift to <strong>Lindenwood</strong>.<br />

Tax-Qualified Retirement Plan Gifts<br />

With careful planning, gifts <strong>of</strong> tax-qualified<br />

retirement plan assets, such as IRAs, can reduce your<br />

The Butler Society is named after Colonel James G. and Margaret Leggat Butler,<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong>’s most generous supporters during the 1900s. Today, the Butler Society<br />

Endowed Scholarships<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> the Endowed Scholarship Program at<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> is to assist deserving young<br />

men and women in financing their education and to<br />

recognize the generosity <strong>of</strong> the individual donors who<br />

support and encourage them. <strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

accepts students from a large pool <strong>of</strong> outstanding<br />

applicants each year, but many <strong>of</strong> them cannot pursue<br />

their educational goals without financial assistance.<br />

These scholarships, combined with other assistance<br />

such as Work and Learn, provide students the<br />

opportunity to achieve their goals at <strong>Lindenwood</strong>.<br />

A scholarship is fully endowed when the fund<br />

principal meets or exceeds $25,000. An individual,<br />

family, group <strong>of</strong> friends, or a business may establish an<br />

endowed scholarship fund with an initial gift <strong>of</strong> $1,000.<br />

<strong>Honor</strong>s Awards<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Honor</strong>s Award Program at<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong> is to annually honor deserving<br />

young men and women and to recognize the generosity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the individuals, families, and organizations who<br />

support them. Every spring at the <strong>Honor</strong>s Convocation<br />

ceremony, these awards <strong>of</strong> merit are presented to<br />

students who demonstrate outstanding examples <strong>of</strong><br />

leadership, scholastic performance, loyalty, and service<br />

through academic and extracurricular activities at<br />

<strong>Lindenwood</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Additional gifts will be applied to fund the principal as<br />

they are received. Interest generated by the fund may<br />

be held and applied to the principal to help complete<br />

the fund or may be blended with other endowment<br />

interest to award scholarships until the fund reaches<br />

$25,000. Only the interest generated by the fund is<br />

awarded. The corpus, or principal, <strong>of</strong> the fund is<br />

invested and is not distributed.<br />

because many companies will match the contributions<br />
