The Virginia State<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ference NAACP hosted its<br />

Diam<strong>on</strong>d Jubilee Anniversary,<br />

October 29-31st in Roanoke,<br />

Virginia in recogniti<strong>on</strong> of “75<br />

years of Pride, Dedicati<strong>on</strong><br />

and Service” to the citizens of<br />

Virginia. The c<strong>on</strong>ference featured<br />

speakers such as poet<br />

Nikki Giovanni; author, Rawn<br />

James; Jack Gravely local radio<br />

talk show host, and various<br />

youth performers.<br />

Seventy-five years ago the<br />

Virginia State C<strong>on</strong>ference<br />

NAACP was organized in<br />

Roanoke, Virginia by well<br />

know civil rights attorney<br />

focused <strong>on</strong> training youth<br />

in public speaking, and presenting<br />

the right images. The<br />

youth were afforded an opportunity<br />

to engage in a round<br />

table discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> bullying<br />

in schools and how to effectively<br />

address problems with<br />

teachers. Workshops were also<br />

The Diam<strong>on</strong>d Jubilee<br />

Celebrati<strong>on</strong> Banquet was held<br />

Saturday, October 30, with<br />

NAACP President and CEO,<br />

Benjamin Jealous delivering<br />

the Diam<strong>on</strong>d Anniversary<br />

address. The highlights of the<br />

banquet were the introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

of several queens and kings<br />

representing their respective<br />

counties or cities from across<br />

the state.<br />

queen for the State NAACP.<br />

This was a joyous celebrati<strong>on</strong><br />

witnessed by 23 members from<br />

Goochland County and hundreds<br />

of members from across<br />

the state. As Little Miss Sierra<br />

McLean received her crown she<br />

was flanked by three generati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

including her mother Tanika<br />

McLean, Grandmother Katie<br />

Cox and Great- grandmother<br />

Marie Glover all of Goochland<br />

County.<br />

Sierra, a fifth grader at Byrd<br />

Elementary School, raised<br />

$9,000 earning her the state<br />

crown. She is an aspiring lawyer<br />

and an avid soccer player, loves<br />

to read, sing, and praise dance in<br />

her church. Her family, church<br />

and the Goochland County<br />

NAACP Branch are proud to<br />

have brought the crown home<br />

for the first time in the history<br />

of the Branch 60 plus years.<br />

Goochland County NAACP Takes the State NAACP Crown<br />

Speaker of the House of<br />

Delegates William Howell last<br />

week announced leadership<br />

changes in the House when it<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venes in January.<br />

Del. W. R. “Bill” Janis, who<br />

represents Goochland County,<br />

was elected House Majority<br />

Whip, the third most important<br />

positi<strong>on</strong> in the body.<br />

Del. M. Kirkland “Kirk”<br />

Cox of Col<strong>on</strong>ial Heights<br />

was elected House Majority<br />

Leader by the 61-member<br />

str<strong>on</strong>g House Republican<br />

Caucus.<br />
