* The body of nearly all flowering plants can be divided into 2 systems ,
the root system which grows below ground and the shoot system which grows
beneath it . The typical root system anchors the plant firmly in the soil, and
absorbs water and various dissolved raw materials from it .The typical shoot
system consists of a main stem upon which are borne leaves , branch shoots ,
and sometimes flowers . It should be emphasized that the words stem and
shoot are not synonymous , the word "shoot" being a collective term for both
stem and leaves. The leaves are the chief food-producing organs of the plant ,
making complex foods in the presence of light by a process called
photosynthesis. The stem supports the leaves , displaying them in the light
needed for photosynthesis, and also acts as the main channel of
communication between the various organs of the plant . Water and dissolved
minerals absorbed by the roots are carried in the stem to the leaves and
flowers , and foods synthesized in the leaves are conducted away through the
stem to other regions of the plant , both above and below ground, where they
are either used for growth or else stored for future use . Flowers are organs
that are concerned with the reproduction of the species by seeds.
36 The word "anchors' is closest in meaning to…….
A supports B fixes C suspends D raises
37 The word "it" refers to……
A the root system B the plant C the ground D the soil
A carried B transported
C taken D consumed
39 The word "they" refers to……
A regions B foods C leaves D flowers
40 According to the passage , one main function of the root system is …….
A to absorb light for growth
B to create minerals for nutrition
C to speed the reproduction process
D to secure the plant in the ground
41 The major food-producing part of a plant is the………
A leaf B root C flower D shoot
42 The author implies that plants with flowers ……..
A are likely to have long roots
B are not reproducing organisms
C can be grown from seeds

D are the most beautiful of all plants
43 With which of the following would the author be most likely to agree ?
C The stem and the shoot are identical
D The stem is not part of a flowering plant
44 With what topic is the passage primarily concerned ?
A How plants produce seeds
B Different types of flowers
C The structure of plants
B Methods of increasing production
C The definition of a plant body
D The differences between flowers and leaves
* History books record that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer
in 1927 . But sound films , or "talkies" , did not suddenly appear after years of
silent screenings . From the earliest public performances in 1896 , films were
accompanied by music and sound effects . These were produced by a single
pianist , a small band , or a full-scale orchestra : large movie theatres could
buy sound effects machines.
Research into sound that was reproduced at exactly the same time as the
pictures _ called "synchronized sound" _ began soon after the first film was
shown . With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing
and speak . As early as 1896 , the newly invented gramophone , which played
a large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system . The
biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become
unsynchronized if , for example , the gramophone needle jumped or if the
speed of the projector changed . This system was only effective for a single
song or dialogue sequence .
In the "sound-on-film" system , sound was recorded as a series of marks
on celluloid which could be read by an optical sensor . These signals could be
placed on the film alongside the image , guaranteeing synchronization . Short
feature films were produced in this way as early as 1922 . This system
eventually brought us "talking pictures".
46 The word "These" refers to……
A history books B sound films
C silent films D music and sound effects

47 The word "alongside" could best be replaced by…….
50 Which of the following is not mentioned as a producer of sound to
accompany movies ?
A a jazz singer B a small band
C a single pianist D a gramophone
51 Gramophones were ineffective because they………
A got out with the synchronization with the pictures
B were too large for most movie theatres
C were newly invented and still bad imperfections
D changed speed when the needle jumped
52 Sound on-film guaranteed synchronization because the recording was
………
A made during the filming of the picture B read by an optical sensor
C inserted beside the image on the film D marked on the gramophone
53 Short feature films produced as early as 1922……..
A were recorded by optical sensors
B put musicians out of work
C were only effective for dialogue sequences
D preceded talking pictures
54 The passage is mainly about the …….
A history of silent movies
B disadvantages of synchronized sound
C development of sound with movies
D research into sound reproduction
55 It can be inferred that……..
A most movie theaters had a pianist
B sound effects machines were not common because they were
expensive
C orchestras couldn't synchronize sound with the pictures
D gramophones were developed at the same time as moving pictures
