Executive MBA Programs
vs. Traditional MBA
The Merage School offers two Executive MBA
programs: Executive MBA (EMBA) and
Health Care Executive MBA (HCEMBA).
The EMBA is a specific type of accredited
MBA program created for experienced
professionals including entrepreneurs,
senior managers, directors, VPs, presidents,
CFOs and CEOs. The HCEMBA is a niche
EMBA for industry professionals from the
intersecting worlds of biotech, medical device,
pharmaceutical, managed care, insurance,
healthcare services, and healthcare policy.
While the degree is the same, Executive
MBA programs differ from traditional MBA
programs in a number of ways. For example:
The EMBA and HCEMBA class members
typically have on average 15 years and 12
years of work experience with a minimum of
eight and five, respectively.
The EMBA/HCEMBA part-time class
schedules allow for busy professionals
to continue working while pursuing their
studies.
The EMBA/HCEMBA curriculum follows the
same high standards as our full-time MBA
program, while adjusting for the high level
of experience and knowledge that more
senior participants bring to the classroom.

you to bring work issues to class — your
experienced fellow students and faculty will
help you develop a solution that you can bring
back to the office and implement on Monday!

Residentials — Out of the
Classroom and into the World
You’ll gain some of the most valuable and enjoyable learning opportunities during our off-site
learning experiences, called residentials. Few other Executive MBA programs offer a sequence
of required residentials making the Merage EMBA program truly unique. Fees for the programs,
speakers, events, transportation and hotels are generally included in your tuition, with the
exception of airfare to the International or Health Care Policy residentials.
Opening Residential: Management of Complex Organizations
For both EMBA and HCEMBA — Scheduled prior to your first day of class, you’ll be introduced
to your class and study groups of fellow professionals while learning how to analyze organizations.
This is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with your colleagues and future teammates
before regular classes begin. (five days)
International Residential: Global Business II
For EMBA only — Executive students agree that this is one of the highlights of the EMBA
program. It provides a unique opportunity to experience global business firsthand from a corporate,
academic and cultural standpoint. Recent residentials have been held in Russia, Shanghai/Beijing,
and Hong Kong/Guangzhou. As we are always researching emerging markets, the locations for
international residentials are determined based on that criteria. (five days)
Federal Health Care Policy Residential
For HCEMBA only — In year two of the program, HCEMBA students travel to Washington, D.C.
where they have the opportunity to meet with health care industry leaders, policy analysts,
politicians, and others who are involved in the legislative and regulatory process. You will gain a
better understanding of the health care issues being debated by Congress and learn firsthand
how the legislative and regulatory process works. (five days)

Final Residential: Executive Leadership
For both EMBA and HCEMBA — Both Merage Executive MBA programs culminate in a

Is the Merage Executive MBA
Program Right for You?
Some Guidelines to Help You Make Your Decision
An Executive MBA program is not for everyone
— the program requires an experienced,
diligent, dedicated individual for completion.
While successful candidates are varied, they
share some common traits.
Your Educational Background
All EMBA and HCEMBA candidates have
a bachelor’s degree, and some have also
earned graduate or professional degrees in
fields other than business administration, such
as engineering, computer science, law or
medicine. A small number hold PhDs.
Your Work Experience
For the Executive MBA program, a minimum
of eight years of experience is required; for
the HCEMBA, a minimum of five years of
health care experience is required, including
positions with management responsibility. We
strongly value your experience and it is an
important part of consideration for admission.
A record of significant achievement is a good
indicator of your ability to succeed.
Your Current Employment
You will benefit most if you can apply
the knowledge and skills learned in the
classroom in your position, especially if you
have significant management responsibility.
Employer support is critical, typically from a
top manager or executive. You must arrange
release time and may receive financial support
from your employer.
Your Career Goals
How will you use your new knowledge and
skills to further your career goals? Are there
specific job opportunities within your company
or industry that an Executive or Health Care
Executive MBA would help you attain? Are
you looking to change industries or start your
own business? When you have a clear goal,
it positions you as a successful candidate for
admission and will help you commit to and

ambition to succeed? Typically, a high
percentage of Executive or Health Care
Executive MBA students are hard-driving,
take-charge personalities. However, people
with creative and thoughtful personalities can
also succeed by drawing on their distinctive

When Dr. Haresh Jhangiani, Chairman of ClinicAid and President/
CEO of Compassionate Cancer Care Medical Group started the
HCEMBA program, he had been in practice for one year. Upon
meeting classmates Drs. Dwight Tapp and Kim Tran, the idea for
a new company took shape. They knew what they wanted — a
business that complemented their passions, education and
experience in science and medicine.
That’s how ClinicAid Research Management, a Contract
Research Organization specializing in clinical research for
physicians was born with a staff of just two employees. Through
their business knowledge and leadership capabilities, Tapp as
CEO and Tran as COO, grew the company to a staff of 12 and
today it is achieving enormous success. Jhangiani says, “I was
starting a new practice and building my own business so going
to school was very difficult. But the hard work is paying off. We
are now realizing the rewards.”
