Fatigue<br />

“Fatigue is the Physical <strong>and</strong> Psychological that accumulates<br />

when an individuals optimal physical or mental limits are<br />

exceeded. It manifests as degradation in both physical <strong>and</strong><br />

mental performance”.


What can affect Fatigue<br />

Fatigue levels can be affected by:<br />

•Individual characteristics i.e. chronic illness, sleeping disorder, fitness<br />

•Private commitments i.e. family, social activities<br />

•Sleeping Environment i.e. sleeping habits, nutrition, preparation for first night<br />

shift, <strong>management</strong> of stress levels<br />

•Commuting i.e. daily trips – start / end cycle<br />

•Environment i.e. temperature, noise, light levels, humidity, dust<br />

Managing Fatigue Risk<br />

Organisational strategies<br />

•Pre-employment screening i.e. identification of sleeping disorder<br />

•Assessment at work i.e. Risk assessment carried out by<br />

supervisor<br />

•Self <strong>management</strong><br />

•Ongoing education to all employees<br />

•Peer <strong>management</strong> i.e. ‘look after your mate’ philosophy<br />

•Supervision <strong>management</strong><br />

•Develop a culture where a worker can bring up <strong>fatigue</strong> issues


Mount Isa Mines<br />

Has a procedure that defines the responsibilities <strong>and</strong> expectations<br />

placed on the organisation, supervisors <strong>and</strong> workers of identifying<br />

risks with <strong>fatigue</strong>.<br />

•The procedure also provides an organisational <strong>and</strong> individual<br />

procedures to manage employees assessed unfit for work under<br />

the procedure <strong>and</strong> describes what assistance the company will<br />

provide to manage fitness for work issues. EAP etc<br />

•The procedure applies to all employees, contractors <strong>and</strong> visitors<br />

to Mount Isa Mines.


Strategic elements of our Fatigue<br />

Management Procedure<br />

1. Obligation – all employees, contractors <strong>and</strong> visitors have an<br />

obligation to minimise the cause of work related <strong>fatigue</strong>.<br />

Notification to supervisor. Obtain adequate sleep. Presenting to<br />

work. Shift <strong>and</strong> roster change.<br />

2. Work <strong>management</strong> – site manager shall take all practicable<br />

steps to manage the work environment <strong>and</strong> minimise the<br />

impact of <strong>fatigue</strong><br />

3. Risk <strong>management</strong> – this system provides a process to<br />

identify what impact <strong>fatigue</strong> has on a task or process.

4.Management of Fatigue Employees<br />

Observation Record – (Fatigue) if filled out by the supervisors with<br />

the employee. The observation <strong>and</strong> discussion with the<br />

employee is to enable the supervisor to assess the presence of<br />

risk factors. Knowledge of the impact on <strong>fatigue</strong> for example<br />

sleep patterns, family circumstances<br />

5. Monitoring <strong>and</strong> Reviewing<br />

Monitoring <strong>and</strong> reviewing the program established to ensure control<br />

strategies are applied.

6. Confidentiality<br />

All reasonable efforts consistent with safety, practical <strong>and</strong><br />

legal requirement shall be taken to ensure individuals<br />

privacy at all times.<br />

7.Records Management<br />

All records shall be stored in compliance with relevant<br />

legislative requirements.<br />

Any individual who wishes to review their own records can<br />

view these.


EAP – Employment Assistance<br />

Program<br />

<strong>Xstrata</strong> have this service available for all employees.<br />

The service provides assistance <strong>and</strong> support to those employees affected<br />

by Fatigue <strong>and</strong> any other emotional issues.<br />

The employee can self refer or be referred by their supervisor.

Health Promotion<br />

Health Promotion is a multi-strategic process of enabling<br />

employees to increase control over <strong>and</strong> improve their Health.<br />

<strong>Xstrata</strong> have a well planned health promotion program integrated<br />

into our workplace.<br />

• This program is also enhanced targeted health programs<br />

delivered in the workplace by trained health promotion staff.<br />

This type of delivery evidence suggests it has a positive effect<br />

to encourage <strong>and</strong> motivate healthy lifestyle behaviours by<br />

employees.<br />

• Health Promotion in <strong>Xstrata</strong> goes far beyond the st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

health education as it incorporates aspects such as strengthen<br />

<strong>and</strong> support environment <strong>and</strong> reorienting of employees towards<br />

the prevention of ill health.
