Report Writing
PURPOSE
To organize and record factual information to describe or outline certain topics or issues.
People are asked to write many different types of reports:
Book Reports, Newspaper Articles, Progress Reports, Biographies
There are a few things to remember when learning about report writing.
Reports are based on real events or factual information. Therefore the specific details about that event
must be written in a clear and precise way. This allows the reader the chance to fully understand the event or
situation being written about.
Specific information is used when writing a report. Facts and information must be accurate to insure the
report is true.
Reports always introduce topics with a classification statement at the beginning of the writing. This
introduction may come in different forms, for example some reports may begin with a specific fact about the
topic - “Harry Potter is a movie created from a novel.” The introduction should also expand on a fact or
issue featured in the report - “Harry Potter is the second largest grossing film of all time”
A description follows the classification statement. This outlines the topic in greater detail. For example if a
report is about animals, aspects such as physical characteristics, location and dynamics would be discussed.
However, if the topic were computers, components and their functions might be described.
Reports often end with a summarizing comment or conclusion. This helps to complete the writing, leaving
the audience feeling enlightened or complete.
What do you include in a report? List and explain all the components below.
