Les Histoires Naturelles (Nature Stories)<br />

A delightful variation on the long tradition <strong>of</strong> bestiary writing, Jules Renard’s short verse <strong>and</strong> prose<br />

poems have captured the imagination <strong>of</strong> readers <strong>and</strong> artists since they were originally written in 1894,<br />

with Ravel famously setting five <strong>of</strong> them to music.<br />

The groundbreaking Histoires naturelles (1906) were one <strong>of</strong> Maurice Ravel’s most important early works.<br />

Employing prose <strong>and</strong> a conversational vocal style, they redefined the mélodie --a genre that had been<br />

characterized by its use <strong>of</strong> poetry <strong>and</strong> aristocratic French diction. Performance <strong>of</strong> these five songs presents<br />

singers with formidable challenges. The vocal line, imitating speech, is notable for its rhythmic complexity.<br />

From the country where the piano was originally invented, Paolo<br />

Fazioli has completely re-invented this instrument.<br />

In a short time Fazioli has become a legend. The individually h<strong>and</strong>crafted<br />

Fazioli pianos are garnering attention the world-over for their crystal-clear sound.<br />

No other piano has more innovative, technical design, finer materials or better workmanship.<br />

No wonder it is a favourite <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the world’s greatest pianists including Herbie Hancock, Angela Hewitt,<br />

Louie Lortie, Nikolai Demidenko among others.<br />

Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937)<br />

Ravel was a French composer known especially for his melodies, orchestral <strong>and</strong> instrumental<br />

textures <strong>and</strong> effects. Along with Claude Debussy, he was one <strong>of</strong> the most prominent figures<br />

associated with Impressionist music.<br />

Magnificent, he strolled<br />

with the allure <strong>of</strong> an Indian prince<br />

<strong>and</strong> brought the customary rich presents.<br />

love kindled a burst <strong>of</strong> colors<br />

<strong>and</strong> his aigret quivered like a lyre.<br />

His fiancée does not arrive.<br />

He climbs to the top <strong>of</strong> the ro<strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> from its edge beholds the sun.<br />

He sounds his diabolical cry:<br />

“leon! leon!”<br />

Thus does he call his fiancée.<br />

He sees nothing come, <strong>and</strong> no one answers.<br />

The birds, accustomed to this,<br />

do not even raise their head.<br />

They are bored <strong>of</strong> admiring him.<br />

He comes down <strong>and</strong> enters the courtyard,<br />

so sure <strong>of</strong> his own beauty<br />

that he is incapable <strong>of</strong> rancor.<br />

His wedding will be tomorrow.<br />

And, not knowing what to do<br />

for the rest <strong>of</strong> the day,<br />

he heads toward the porch.<br />

He climbs its stairs,<br />

like the stairs <strong>of</strong> the temple,<br />

with an <strong>of</strong>ficious tread.<br />

He picks up his tailed robe<br />

so heavy from eyes<br />

that cannot detach themselves.<br />

He repeats the ceremony one more time.<br />

It is the hour when, bored with w<strong>and</strong>ering,<br />

the black insect returns to the promenade<br />

<strong>and</strong> tidies up his domain.<br />

First he rakes his narrow s<strong>and</strong>y paths.<br />

He makes sawdust that he piles<br />

on the threshold <strong>of</strong> his hideaway.<br />

He files the root <strong>of</strong> the tall grass,<br />

appropriate for attacking with.<br />

He rests.<br />

Then he mounts once more his minuscule watch.<br />

Has he finished? Is it broken?<br />

He rests again for a little while.<br />

He returns home <strong>and</strong> closes his door.<br />

A long while he turns the key<br />

in the delicate lock.<br />

Then he listens;<br />

nothing alarming outside.<br />

but he does not find security.<br />

And, like a small chain<br />

whose teeth a pulley gnashes,<br />

he descends into the depths <strong>of</strong> the earth.<br />

He no longer hears anything.<br />

In the mute countryside,<br />

the poplars st<strong>and</strong> erect like fingers in the air,<br />

pointing toward the moon.

Doucement, sur son léger coussin de plumes,<br />

le cygne rame et s’approche...<br />

Il s’épuise à pêcher de vains reflets,<br />

et peut-être qu’il mourra, victime de cette<br />

illusion,<br />

avant d’attraper un seul morceau de nuage.<br />

Mais qu’est-ce que je dis ?<br />

Chaque fois qu’il plonge, il fouille du bec<br />

la vase nourrissante et ramène un ver.<br />

Il engraisse comme une oie.<br />

Le Cygne ❦ The Swan<br />

He glides upon the basin, like a white sleigh,<br />

from cloud to cloud. For he is hungry only for the<br />

snowy clouds<br />

that he sees born, move, <strong>and</strong> become lost in the<br />

water.<br />

He desires to grab one from the waters. He aims<br />

with his beak,<br />

<strong>and</strong> he plunges suddenly, his flight dressed in<br />

snow.<br />

Then like a woman’s arm emerging from a<br />

sleeve, he withdraws.<br />

He has nothing.<br />

He sees: the scared clouds have disappeared.<br />

He stays disenchanted only a moment,<br />

for the clouds tarry a little before returning, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

over there, where the water’s undulations die,<br />

here is one forming anew.<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tly, on his little pillow <strong>of</strong> feathers,<br />

the swan paddles <strong>and</strong> approaches. . . .<br />

He tires himself out fishing for vain reflections,<br />

<strong>and</strong> perhaps he will die, victim <strong>of</strong> this illusion,<br />

before catching a single piece <strong>of</strong> cloud.<br />

but what am I saying?<br />

Each time he plunges, he digs with his beak<br />

into nourishing silt <strong>and</strong> returns with a worm.<br />

He fattens himself like a goose.<br />

Le martin-pêcheur ❦ The kingfisher<br />

nothing bit this evening,<br />

but I felt once more a rare emotion.<br />

As I held my pole with line out,<br />

a kingfish l<strong>and</strong>ed on it.<br />

There is no more striking bird.<br />

It seemed like a giant blue flower<br />

at the end <strong>of</strong> a long stem.<br />

The pole bent under its weight.<br />

I dared not breathe, proud to have been taken<br />

for a tree by a kingfisher.<br />

And I was certain that he did not take <strong>of</strong>f from fear,<br />

but because he believed he was only passing<br />

from one branch to another.


C’est la bossue de ma cour.<br />

Parfois elle quitte la cour et disparaît.<br />

Elle laisse aux volailles pacifiques<br />

un moment de répit.<br />

Mais elle revient plus turbulente et plus criarde.<br />

Et, frénétique, elle se vautre par terre.<br />

Qu’a-t’elle donc ?<br />

la sournoise fait une farce.<br />

Elle est allée pondre son oeuf à la campagne.<br />

Je peux le chercher si ça m’amuse.<br />

Et elle se roule dans la poussière comme une<br />

bossue.<br />

La pintade ❦ The guinea hen<br />

It is my beloved hunchback.<br />

she only dreams <strong>of</strong> cankers because <strong>of</strong> her hump.<br />

The hens do not speak to her.<br />

Abruptly, she bolts <strong>and</strong> attacks.<br />

Then she lowers her head, bends her body,<br />

<strong>and</strong> speeding her skinny legs,<br />

she strikes quickly with her strong beak,<br />

aiming for a turkey in the middle <strong>of</strong> the circle.<br />

That show<strong>of</strong>f gets on her nerves.<br />

Thus, with her blue-stained head, its plumage frayed,<br />

she rages from dawn till dusk.<br />

she fights without cause,<br />

perhaps because she imagines<br />

that she is being mocked because <strong>of</strong> her size,<br />

because <strong>of</strong> her bald head, <strong>and</strong> her low tail.<br />

And she continually sounds a discordant cry<br />

that pierces the air like a knife.<br />

At times she leaves the courtyard <strong>and</strong> disappears.<br />

she gives the peaceful birds<br />

a moment’s respite.<br />

but she returns, more turbulently <strong>and</strong> more shrill.<br />

And, frenetically, she sprawls out on the ground.<br />

What is she doing?<br />

The cunning prankster -<br />

she left to lay an egg in the country.<br />

I can find it if I choose.<br />

And she rolls around in the dust like a hunchback.<br />

neDeCkY “has never disappointed, always displaying a<br />

rich, sonorous sensitivity” (opera Canada). “nedecky has a<br />

pleasing lilt to his voice, which is lithe <strong>and</strong> resonant without<br />

heaviness.” (Winnipeg Free Press)<br />

Mr. nedecky performs regularly as a soloist in recital <strong>and</strong><br />

concert engagements. He has appeared with the national<br />

Arts Centre orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber orchestra,<br />

Toronto Philharmonia, Toronto Consort, the Toronto Chamber<br />

Choir, the Aldeburgh Connection Recital series, the <strong>International</strong> bach <strong>Festival</strong> Toronto, Talisker Players,<br />

the brantford symphony, the bach-Elgar Choir <strong>of</strong> Hamilton, the Guelph Chamber Choir, the Mississauga<br />

Choral society, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong> Connection Recital series <strong>of</strong> Calgary. on the operatic stage, he has<br />

performed roles with the Canadian opera Company, saskatoon opera, Toronto Masque Theatre, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

opera Atelier, whose production <strong>of</strong> lully’s Persée is available on commercial video.<br />

Mr. nedecky has been involved in several recent baroque recording projects with the Aradia Ensemble<br />

on the naxos label. He sings the role <strong>of</strong> Corrado in Vivaldi’s opera Griselda — (“Jason nedecky makes<br />

a very manly <strong>and</strong> appealing Corrado”, American Record Guide; “agréable découverte avec le Corrado<br />

de [pleasing find with the Corrado <strong>of</strong>] Jason nedecky”, Diapason) — <strong>and</strong> Ducat in samuel Arnold’s<br />

opera Polly. He is also featured on their disc <strong>of</strong> H<strong>and</strong>el’s Israel in Egypt.<br />

Jason nedecky studied at the university <strong>of</strong> Toronto, in baden bei Wien, Austria, in Aldeburgh, Engl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

at l’Académie Musicale de Villecroze in Provence, France, <strong>and</strong> at the banff Centre. In 2007 <strong>and</strong> 2008,<br />

he was soloist with Consort Caritatis on tours to southeast Europe <strong>and</strong> Italy.<br />

In addition to his performing schedule, Jason nedecky is increasingly sought after for his expertise in<br />

lyric diction. He has acted as language Coach at the Canadian opera Company, the luminato <strong>Festival</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Radio-Canada. He teaches at the university <strong>of</strong> Toronto, <strong>and</strong> the Glenn Gould school <strong>of</strong> the Royal<br />

Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Music, Toronto.<br />

Violinist LauRa ReiD is honoured to make her <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong><br />

Connection debut with such excellent colleagues. laura was<br />

featured as a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic in May 2012,<br />

<strong>and</strong> this season has performed as part <strong>of</strong> the kensington sinfonia<br />

<strong>and</strong> Instrumental society <strong>of</strong> Calgary concert series, as well as the<br />

Ritornello <strong>Festival</strong> in saskatoon. laura began her musical studies<br />

at age three, <strong>and</strong> at age 11 became the youngest member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

saskatoon symphony, a position she held for four years. she went<br />

on to study with Mimi Zweig at Indiana university <strong>and</strong> with scott st.<br />

John at the university <strong>of</strong> Toronto. After graduating, she worked as a<br />

freelance musician in Toronto <strong>and</strong> Montreal before joining the Calgary Philharmonic orchestra in the<br />

fall <strong>of</strong> 2007.<br />

orn <strong>and</strong> raised in Regina, saskatchewan, MiChaeL BuRSeY started<br />

playing the violin at an early age. He later switched to the viola after<br />

breaking his thumb <strong>and</strong> fingers playing football. being <strong>of</strong> large stature,<br />

Michael always thought the violin was like a baby toy anyway.<br />

Finally enjoying playing music for the first time, Michael enrolled at<br />

the Conservatoire de Musique de Quebec to pursue his dream <strong>of</strong> being<br />

a pr<strong>of</strong>essional musician. At the Conservatoire, Michael obtained his<br />

Master’s in Viola Performance, studying viola with Francois Paradis <strong>and</strong> chamber music with Darren<br />

lowe. He also had the opportunity to study with Pinchas Zuckerman <strong>and</strong> steven Dann at the nAC in<br />

ottawa (Young Artists Programme) as well as Roberto Diaz <strong>and</strong> bruno Giuranna at Domaine Forget in<br />

Quebec. He was a member <strong>of</strong> nYo in 1995.<br />

While in Quebec, he played regularly with the Quebec symphony orchestra, the orchestre de<br />

sherbrooke, orchestre symphonique du saguenay lac st. Jean <strong>and</strong> orchestre symphonique de<br />

l’Estuaire. While in Regina he was a member <strong>of</strong> the Regina symphony orchestra. shortly after<br />

graduating in Quebec, Michael obtained his position with the Calgary Philharmonic orchestra.<br />

oLena kiLChYk, native <strong>of</strong> odessa, ukraine, graduated from the odessa<br />

state Music College <strong>and</strong> the odessa state Conservatory. since the age 14<br />

olena was the winner <strong>of</strong> numerous concerto competitions. While in ukraine,<br />

she was a principal cellist <strong>and</strong> soloist <strong>of</strong> the Acedemia odessa Chamber<br />

orchestra <strong>and</strong> Virtuosi <strong>of</strong> odessa Chamber orchestra. she also worked for<br />

the odessa state Philharmonic <strong>and</strong> odessa opera.<br />

After immigrating to Canada, olena received Master <strong>of</strong> Music Degree<br />

in Cello Performance from the university <strong>of</strong> Calgary. In 2000 she was the<br />

winner <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Music Concerto Competition <strong>and</strong> performed<br />

with the u <strong>of</strong> C string Quartet. she had the opportunity to study with such<br />

renowned cellist as shauna Rolston, George nikrug, Tania Prochazka, Raphael Wollfish, Aldo Parisot<br />

<strong>and</strong> Am<strong>and</strong>a Forsyth. olena was invited to perform at the banff summer <strong>Festival</strong>, Resound <strong>Festival</strong>,<br />

Enbridge <strong>Festival</strong>, orford summer <strong>Festival</strong>, u <strong>of</strong> C Chamber Music <strong>Festival</strong>, <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong> <strong>Festival</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> bach <strong>Festival</strong>.<br />

olena has been a member <strong>of</strong> the Prince George, okanagan, Red Deer <strong>and</strong> Calgary Philharmonic<br />

orchestra as well as sinfonia Alberta Chamber orchestra, baroque Modern Chamber orchestra,<br />

Players Chamber Ensemble <strong>and</strong> saint Crispinis Chamber Ensemble.<br />

Ms. kilchyk toured extensively throughout Russia, ukraine, Europe, Canada <strong>and</strong> China. she is a c<strong>of</strong>ounder<br />

<strong>of</strong> sempre la Musica Chamber Ensemble, Helia Chamber Ensemble, Denali Duo <strong>and</strong> bel<br />

Canto strings. Many <strong>of</strong> her performances have been broadcast on CbC <strong>and</strong> other radio <strong>and</strong> television<br />

networks.<br />

Presently olena is the principal cellist for the Calgary bach <strong>Festival</strong> society. In addition to her<br />

performing schedule, olena has a very busy teaching studio. she is a branch instructor <strong>and</strong> faculty<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Conservatory at Mount Royal university.<br />

Alberta-born pianist kaThLeen Van MouRik<br />

earned a bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degree at the university<br />

<strong>of</strong> Calgary in Piano Performance before moving<br />

to the netherl<strong>and</strong>s, where she studied lied <strong>and</strong><br />

chamber music at the Hilversum Conservatory under<br />

Hans broekman, receiving the uitvoerend Musicus<br />

degree. upon returning to Canada, she received a<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Music degree in piano performance under<br />

thetutelage <strong>of</strong> Vladimir levtov at the university <strong>of</strong><br />

Calgary. other important teachers include the late<br />

Greta kraus <strong>and</strong> Rudolf Jansen.<br />

she also studied with Martin Isepp at the banff Centre <strong>and</strong> completed a two piano residency there<br />

with her husb<strong>and</strong>, pianist Charles Foreman. As a two-piano team, they commissioned works by<br />

several composers, <strong>and</strong> recorded a CD <strong>of</strong> French two-piano music released on the Arktos label, En<br />

blanc et noir, which was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in 2008.<br />

Ms. Van Mourik is the founder <strong>and</strong> co-artistic director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

song, Canada’s only summer master class programme <strong>and</strong> concert festival combining art song <strong>and</strong><br />

chamber music, as well as the <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong> Connection, Calgary’s only concert series devoted to<br />

presenting emerging artists in concert.<br />

In addition to her work with <strong>Mountain</strong> <strong>View</strong>, she maintains an active performing schedule, <strong>and</strong> has<br />

appeared across Canada, as well as in the united states, belgium <strong>and</strong> the netherl<strong>and</strong>s. she is also<br />

in dem<strong>and</strong> as an adjudicator, <strong>and</strong> has been a jury member for the Eckhardt-GramattéCompetition<br />

in br<strong>and</strong>on, Manitoba. she has been a soloist with the kensington sinfonia, playing Mozart <strong>and</strong><br />

schumann, <strong>and</strong> performed For the Time being by Juno-nominated Canadian composer brian Current<br />

for national CbC radio during the 2008 Juno Awards weekend. she also performs regularly as orchestral<br />

pianist with the Red Deer symphony. Her original theatrical recital, Pierrot Moonstruck! toured nova<br />

scotia in May, 2012, <strong>and</strong> was a part <strong>of</strong> Toronto`s Moordale Concert series in April 2013.<br />

she has developed a reputation as an outst<strong>and</strong>ing chamber musician <strong>and</strong> vocal accompanist,<br />

collaborating with such artists as violinists Edmond Agopian, Donovan seidle <strong>and</strong> olivier Thouin,<br />

cellists Yegor Dyachkov <strong>and</strong> kirill kalmykov, mezzo-soprano karen Cargill, dancer Denise Clarke,<br />

soprano Allison Angelo, <strong>and</strong> flautist Christie Reside. she can be heard on the laura Taler DVD<br />

love songs featuring soprano Tracy smith bessette recorded by bravo!FACT. Her work is regularly<br />

broadcast on national <strong>and</strong> regional CbC Radio, <strong>and</strong><br />

she has also appeared on radio <strong>and</strong> television in the<br />

netherl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Artistic Directors<br />

Pianist ChaRLeS FoReMan has been equally<br />

praised for his superb musicianship, his formidable<br />

technique, his vast repertoire, <strong>and</strong> his imaginative<br />

programming. He completed his - <strong>and</strong> Calgary’s<br />

- first cycle <strong>of</strong> the thirty-two beethoven piano<br />

sonatas in 2005, to sold-out houses <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

ovations. In 2001, Foreman concluded his “sounds


<strong>of</strong> a Century” project, ten recitals <strong>of</strong> twentieth-century piano music, one for each decade, a series<br />

bob Clark <strong>of</strong> the Calgary Herald called “monumental…heroic but illuminating.” He began a cycle<br />

<strong>of</strong> the complete works <strong>of</strong> Chopin for solo piano in the fall <strong>of</strong> 2006, <strong>and</strong> became the first Canadian<br />

pianist ever to complete the cycle in March, 2009. His multi-faceted career has included pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

broadcasting for the CbC, pr<strong>of</strong>essional acting, musical direction, arts administration, <strong>and</strong> premiering<br />

works by composers as diverse as George Crumb, stewart Grant, oskar Morawetz, Violet Archer, <strong>and</strong><br />

William Jordan.<br />

Foreman made his debut in 1972 with the Chicago Civic orchestra conducted by David Gilbert, playing<br />

the brahms b-flat Concerto. since then, he has won prizes in Canadian <strong>and</strong> u.s. piano competitions,<br />

received two Canada Council grants for study <strong>and</strong> performance in Europe, performed numerous times<br />

with orchestras in north America (including eight repeat engagements as soloist with the Calgary<br />

Philharmonic), <strong>and</strong> played over six hundred solo <strong>and</strong> chamber recitals in Austria, belgium, Germany,<br />

the netherl<strong>and</strong>s, spain, switzerl<strong>and</strong>, Canada, <strong>and</strong> the u.s.<br />

As a chamber musician, Charles Foreman has performed repeatedly with artists such as Edmond<br />

Agopian, Robert Aitken, Donald bell, Jeremy brown, James Campbell, stephen Dann, Anthony Elliott,<br />

lea Foli, Phyllis Mailing, János négyesy, Wendy nielsen, Päivikki nykter, Per Øien, Carol Plantamura,<br />

Gerald stanick, kathleen van Mourik, Carol Wincenc, <strong>and</strong> Tanya Dusevic Witek. He has recorded more<br />

than a dozen compact discs on the unical, Antes Edition, Arktos, MsR Classics, <strong>and</strong> Centredisc labels.<br />

lougheed House, also known as beaulieu, was home to senator James Alex<strong>and</strong>er lougheed, lady Isabella Hardisty<br />

lougheed, their six children <strong>and</strong> staff.<br />

This gr<strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong>stone prairie mansion was built in 1891 <strong>and</strong> enlarged in 1907; the impressive scale <strong>and</strong> the high<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> the design, materials <strong>and</strong> interior furnishings <strong>of</strong> the house reflected the wealth <strong>and</strong> prestige <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lougheeds. An article in the Calgary Daily Herald claimed it was “one <strong>of</strong> the finest residences in the Canadian<br />

northwest.”<br />

In their day, when the population <strong>of</strong> this pioneer town was under 4,000, the lougheeds were among Calgary’s<br />

most influential citizens; they would remain so for decades. Their house was a political <strong>and</strong> social hub <strong>of</strong> this<br />

young <strong>and</strong> fast-growing prairie center, <strong>and</strong> received many renowned visitors.<br />

Today, Calgary’s population is over one million <strong>and</strong> lougheed House proudly st<strong>and</strong>s on its original 2.8 acre estate,<br />

now on the edge <strong>of</strong> downtown Calgary. The vision continues, as the Conservation society sources furniture <strong>and</strong><br />

artefacts to furnish rooms <strong>and</strong> form displays. Exhibitions are held regularly.<br />

on June 22, the Canadian premiere <strong>of</strong> Ennea’s Domein, a piece for nine instruments<br />

written by the Dutch composer Robin de Raaff. Robin is currently Artist in Residence at<br />

the banff Centre, <strong>and</strong> has already established himself as a very important composer,<br />

having had music performed by the netherl<strong>and</strong>s opera, the boston symphony <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Concertgebouw orchestra.<br />

We are privileged to be able to bring his music to the Calgary public. The concert will<br />

feature several Calgary Philharmonic orchestra players. Performers include Donovan<br />

seidle, <strong>and</strong> laura Reid, violins; Michael bursey, viola; olena kilchyk, cello; <strong>and</strong> Matthew<br />

Heller, double bass. Charles Foreman <strong>and</strong> kathleen van Mourik, Artistic Directors <strong>of</strong><br />

The Exposition universelle <strong>of</strong> 1889 was a World’s Fair held in Paris, France from 6 May to 31 october 1889.<br />

It was held during the year <strong>of</strong> the 100th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the sroming <strong>of</strong> the bastille, an event traditionally<br />

considered as the symbol for the beginning <strong>of</strong> the French Revolution. The fair included a reconstruction <strong>of</strong><br />

the bastille <strong>and</strong> its surrounding neighbourhood, but with the interior courtyard covered with a blue ceiling<br />

decorated with fleur-de-lys <strong>and</strong> used asa ballroom <strong>and</strong> gathering place.
