Circumcision
Oakland and Richmond Urology

Reasons for Circumcision
Tight foreskin that will not retract –

(Kaiser covered)
“Phimosis Phimosis”
Recurrent infections ( “Balanitis Balanitis”) ) despite good hygiene and
treatment with topical antifungal creams

(Kaiser covered)
Family, Religious or Culture Reasons

( not Kaiser covered, self paid)
Phimosis

What is a Circumcision?
A Skin Operation:

circumcision involves removing the foreskin on the
penis.
The foreskin is the sleeve-like sleeve like skin that covers the
head of the penis
foreskin

How is a Circumcision done?
The sleeve-like sleeve like foreskin is excised under anesthesia
Stitches are placed to sew together the inner and outer
ends of the remaining penis skin and collar of
remaining foreskin.
Stitches
Remaining collar of
old foreskin
Sleeve of foreskin removed

What kind of Anesthesia is Used?

Children : General Anesthesia
Teens and Adults:

Local Anesthesia alone( Lidocaine

like dental work
injection) –
Local Anesthesia and intravenous sedation

How Long Does Circumcision Take?

The surgery alone takes about 30 minutes or so
in most cases.
The whole process of pre-surgery pre surgery registration
and preparation, surgery, anesthesia and
recovery from sedation or anesthesia can add up
to more than 4 hours

When Can I Remove the Dressings?

If the dressings ( gauze) gets dirty,
soiled or wet, remove then right away
and replace with a new one
After 24-48 24 48 hours after surgery you
do not need a dressing.

A gauze may be desirable to decrease
discomfort and catch small spotting of
blood
An Athletic Supporter can be helpful to
hold the dressings/gauze.
Vasoline
or antibiotic ointment may be
helpful to keep gauze from sticking to
the sutured area

When Can I Bathe?
You can take a shower 1-2 1 2 days after the surgery
You may take a bath 1 week after surgery

Bathing in the tub may help the healing go faster and
the stitches go away sooner!

What is the Recovery ?
Rest is recommended for a few days.

Longer if bleeding or infection is a problem
Work and routine activities can resume within 1
week
No sexual activities for at least 6 weeks

Your surgeon should tell you when it is OK to resume
normal sexual activities
No – you won’t need crutches!

What Will I Experience After
Circumcision?
Your surgery will have whisker-like whisker like stitches

Using Vasoline
or antibacterial ointment may help
keeping stitches from sticking to dressings or
underwear
Your will be a little swollen

Swelling and flattening of the skin takes a few
months or more
“Train Train tracks” tracks and thickening of the sutured area is
normal right after surgery
You may feel sensitive or sore

Sensitivity improves over several weeks in most
cases

What Will I Experience After
Circumcision?
You may see spot of blood on dressings

Spotting isn’t isn t worrisome.
If bleeding is alarming – apply First Aide.
Pressure for 10 minutes by the clock
If bleeding does not stop, call your Urologist
You may have some black and blue
discoloration
of the penis skin

A little bleeding occurs during and after surgery. This
causes harmless discoloration.
The head of the penis may have raw areas

If the foreskin was adherent to the head of the penis,
raw areas may take time to heal. They always do.

What about the Stitches?
They dissolve on their own
over a matter of
about 1-2 1 2 months
They do not need to be removed!

What about the Stitches?
I see like drops of pus
coming from some
stitches. Is this an infection?
In most cases, this is a reaction to the stitch and
not a true infection.

Bath in the tub twice a day.
If pain, redness or swelling occurs, call your
Urologist for advice or a check-u[ check u[

What are the Signs of Infection?
Increasing Pain
Increasing Redness
Increasing Swelling
Pus or foul drainage
Fever
Call Your Urologist
if you think you may have
an infection.
In most cases, antibiotics alone are needed.

What are the Risks of Circumcision
Infection
Cosmetic problems and scarring
Pain or hypersensitivity
Change in sexual sensation
Bleeding
Anesthesia complications ( especially if
done with general anesthesia
