Spelling Contract Activities Descriptions:
Below you will find a description for each activity in the spelling
contract. For the next two or three weeks, all of the activities will be
introduced in class. Your child may start “choosing” an activity to
complete after they have all been introduced for a total of three
activities per week. The activities will be due on Fridays along with any
other homework assignments.
1. Syllables Tree Map: Using a Tree Map sort your words by the number of
syllables each word contains. If all of your words only have one syllable then
you must choose a different activity.
2. Rhyme Time: Write each spelling word two times. Write rhyming word
next to the spelling word. Example- cat cat hat
3. 5 Times Each: Write each spelling word five times each.
4. Spelling Addition: Write each spelling word two times. Give each
spelling word a point value by adding two points for each vowel and
three points for each consonant. Example- bat bat 3 + 2 + 3 = 8
5. Say That Again: Look up any ten spelling words for the week in a
thesaurus. What other words mean the same thing? Make a list of two
similar words for each word on your spelling list. Circle each spelling word.
Example: duck bend drop
6. Friendly Letter: Write a letter to a friend using each spelling word. Draw
a circle around each spelling word. Use your imagination!
7. Tree Map (word sort): Sort the weekly spelling words by the “rule” for
those words. Make a tree map to write the words under the correct
category.
Example: -uck, -ack, -ick
8. Rainbow Words: Write each letter of each word a different color. Do
this for all of the spelling words for the week. Example- d i s h
(green) (red) (blue) (pink)

9. Ransom Words: Write your words by cutting out letters in
newspapers/magazines and glue them on paper.
10. Story Words: Write a short story using all your words. Draw a circle
around each spelling word.
11. Cheer Your Words: Develop a cheer for at least ten of your spelling
words. Make it snappy, make it catchy, but make sure you spell out the
letters of each word. Write your cheer on paper. Underline each spelling
word.
12. 30 Second Words: Write a TV commercial using all the words from your
spelling list. Be creative! Circle each spelling word.
13. Sentences: Write a sentence for ten spelling words of your choice. (10
words= 10 sentences) Make sure to include at least eight words in each
sentence. Underline the spelling word in each sentence.
Example: The beautiful fox leaped across the green meadow.
14. Categories Tree Map: Using a tree map, sort your spelling words
according to their part of speech (noun, verb, adjective).
*Noun- a person, place, or thing
*Verb- an action word
*Adjective- a describing word
15. Sailboat Style: Write each of your spelling words in sailboat style. Add a
letter as you do down the sail. On the boat write the spelling word.
s
sp
spe
spel
spell
spelli
spellin
spelling

16. Vowel/Consonant: Write the weekly spelling words in red and blue
colored pencil, pen, or crayon. Consonants will be written in blue and vowels
will be written in red.
17. Questions: Write a question for each of your spelling words. Circle the
spelling words in each question.
18. Z to A Order: Write your words in Z to A order. This is the opposite of
ABC order.
29. ABC Order: Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. Write your
words going down the side of your paper.
20. Definitions: Using a dictionary, look up the meanings or definitions of
ten of your spelling words for the week. Write the definition beside of each
spelling word.
21. Headlines! Search for each spelling word (the whole word) in
newspapers/magazines and glue them onto paper.
