As we celebrate FONZ’s 50th anniversary in 2008, we have the wonderful opportunity to reflect upon five decades of success in supporting the
Smithsonian’s National Zoo. It is also time to take stock of how we can do more to advance the Zoo and its animal care, conservation science, education,
and sustainability mission in our next half century. In 2007, we marked many firsts, from record revenues to new partnerships to the birth of our first giant
anteater pup. And, we used these opportunities to gain focus for the future: The FONZ Board of Directors began the year by devising a new Strategic Plan
that includes the mission statement you see on the preceding page and the following strategic goals:
1. Provide an Unsurpassed Zoo Visitor Experience
2. Expand the Partnership Relationship with the National Zoo and Other Partners
3. Achieve Organizational Excellence and Financial Strength
We’re excited about what we’ve accomplished and what lies ahead. Through our close partnership with and support for the National Zoo, we work to save
wildlife and habitats—irreplaceable riches on our unique planet. This can only be done if we inspire people to join us and make a difference. As you will
read in the following pages, we continued to advance on this front in 2007.
Meanwhile, the Zoo continues its move toward meeting Director John Berry’s goal of becoming the world’s finest zoo within a decade. Our plan is to
support this effort and in the process become the world’s finest zoo-support organization.
We hope you will gain a sense of our progress while leafing through this report. But don’t just take our word for it: Come experience the Zoo on foot or
online. Together we will help protect our planet’s stunning wildlife not just today, but for future generations.
A YEAR of FIRSTS
It seems only fitting that FONZ—one of the first conservation organizations founded in the nation’s capital—and
the Zoo celebrated so many firsts in 2007. These achievements marked a year in which FONZ prepared to celebrate
its 50th anniversary—a milestone we will commemorate in 2008.
In 2007, FONZ posted another strong year, with revenues from operations and fundraising of $21 million. This
success enabled FONZ to fund education programs, exhibit improvements, and science and conservation programs
for species as diverse as giant pandas, migratory birds, and endangered coral.
FONZ STRATEGIC GOALS
Zoo Director John Berry has outlined a plan to make the Smithsonian’s National Zoo the world’s finest zoo by
2016. In support of this ambitious goal, in 2007 FONZ developed a strategic plan that charts a complimentary
course to becoming the world’s finest zoo-support organization. The mission statement at the beginning of this
report and the following strategic goals will serve as guideposts for the journey.
CONNECTING PEOPLE with WILDLIFE
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is a place like no other—one of the world’s finest zoos and one of the few that
opens its gates for free to millions each year. With a fascinating array of animals and programs, the opportunities to
educate, entertain, and inspire are endless.
GOAL 1
Provide an
Unsurpassed
Zoo Visitor Experience

VISITATION
•
•
The National Zoo welcomed more than 2.6 million visitors, one of its
best years of attendance.
The Zoo/FONZ website registered nearly 25 million visits.
EDUCATION
•
FONZ’s education initiatives expanded in 2007 to accommodate
demand. An estimated 1.5 million people participated in these
programs. FONZ reached educators and students via the following
outlets:
-
-
Here are a few highlights of our efforts to connect people with wildlife in 2007:
An estimated 25,000 students and teachers from around the world
downloaded and used, for free, our Zoo- and conservation-related
activity and curriculum guides.
FONZ also reached students and educators via classes, summer
camps, and school partnerships, including a summer day camp
for students in kindergarten through 5th grade and an overnight
camp at the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center for 5th
through 10th graders.
-
-
-
FONZ’s volunteer-led exhibit-interpreter programs reached more
than 1 million visitors.
Ecotourism opportunities for adults, families, and teens, including
the Eco-Explorers teen travel program, provided firsthand
educational adventures in Alaska, China, and other far-flung
locales.
Many others were reached via professional training, workshops,
and fellowships, including courses in wildlife conservation and
management, biodiversity monitoring and assessment, and
zoological medicine.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
•
•
FONZ organized and ran a host of free events that brought people to
the Zoo and closer to wildlife. These included the African-American
Family Celebration on Easter Monday, the Sunset Serenades concert
series, and Fiesta Musical, the Zoo’s Hispanic Heritage Month
celebration highlighting Latin American cultures and wildlife.
The number of Snore & Roar sleepovers and available classes grew in
response to heavy demand.

24
PROVIDING an EXCITING
and ENRICHING ZOO EXPERIENCE
FONZ supports the care and well-being of both animals and the visitors who appreciate them. Not only do we want
people to connect with wildlife and our conservation messages—we want them to have rewarding experiences that
inform and enrich their lives. FONZ employees and volunteers are often the face of the Zoo for the nearly 3 million
people who visit each year. From information aides who greet visitors to volunteer interpreters who help educate
them, FONZ plays a critical role in providing an exciting and enriching experience to Zoo-goers of all ages.
GOAL 1
Provide an
Unsurpassed
Zoo Visitor Experience

•
•
•
•
Here are just a few ways in which FONZ helped Zoo visitors enjoy their experiences in 2007:
FONZ volunteers engaged and assisted visitors as exhibit interpreters
and tour guides, among other public-support roles. Interpreters and
guides explain the natural history and status of the Zoo’s animals, raise
awareness about efforts to study and conserve endangered species, and
share animal artifacts, such as bones, feathers, and fur.
Visitors enjoyed refreshed gift shops and more diverse food choices
from our concessions, including fat-free, sugar-free frozen yogurt and
apple slices.
Food service was also faster thanks to the opening of additional points
of sale at the Mane Restaurant and Panda Plaza Grille.
Visitors received greater assistance from information aides thanks to
improved training, increased staffing, and the placement of aides at the
Connecticut Avenue entrance, where they greeted incoming visitors
and offered them maps for sale.
•
•
•
In return for their dues and continued support, FONZ members
enjoyed special benefits, including free parking, Zoo store discounts,
and informative publications including the magazine ZooGoer and
newsletter Wildlife Adventures, as well as the chance to enroll in
members-only classes, trips, birthday parties, and camps, and attend
the annual early summer Zoo Morning open house.
The award-winning Zoo/FONZ website helped guests plan their visits
and expand their horizons, providing not only directions, hours, and
event details, but also educational materials and extensive information
about Zoo animals and the work done by Zoo scientists and keepers.
Through grounds-keeping, landscaping, and horticulture services,
FONZ staff and volunteers helped clean and beautify the Zoo,
contributing in 2007 to the Zoo’s designation as a public garden by the
American Public Gardens Association.

26
SUPPORTING
ZOO SCIENCE and CONSERVATION
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is an international leader in science and conservation. Zoo scientists work not only
at the Zoo’s facilities in Washington, D.C., and Front Royal, Va., they are involved in field projects and training
programs around the world.
GOAL 2
Expand the
Partnership Relationship
with the National Zoo
and Other Partners

Through its fundraising events, membership activities and programs, and other efforts, FONZ supports much of the
Zoo’s work, including these groundbreaking science programs in 2007:
28
ADVANCING the WELFARE
of ZOO ANIMALS
FONZ supports the care of the National Zoo’s 2,000 animals in a variety of ways, from recruiting volunteer keeper
aides to providing funds for medical equipment, animal enrichment items, and exhibit improvements. In 2007, the
Zoo broke ground for its next sweeping phase of renovation, Elephant Trails, celebrated its first giant anteater birth
and wattled crane hatching, and announced a new agreement with the Chinese government to keep giant panda cub
Tai Shan at the Zoo for two additional years.
GOAL 2
Expand the
Partnership Relationship
with the National Zoo
and Other Partners

•
•
•
•
During this pivotal year, FONZ supported the Zoo’s tenet of excellence in animal care in many ways,
including these highlights:
FONZ’s Adopt a Species program raised $160,000 for the care of
animals at the Zoo and its Conservation and Research Center.
FONZ received a $1 million pledge from longtime friend of the Zoo
Bill McClure, which allowed for the construction of the nine-acre
Cheetah Science Facility at the Zoo’s Conservation and Research
Center, which opened in October.
FONZ volunteer keeper aides provided more than 32,000 hours of
assistance to Zoo staff in caring for animals and exhibits by helping
clean enclosures, prepare food and enrichment items, and conduct
feeding demonstrations, among other keeper duties.
FONZ recruited and trained more than 100 behavior-watch volunteers,
who contributed more than 9,600 hours helping Zoo keepers and
scientists track animal behaviors, a key component of Zoo animal care,
breeding programs, and scientific studies.
•
•
•
FONZ funded one veterinary and one pathology resident, along with
eleven trainees who assisted in various fields of study at the Zoo,
including nutrition and genetics.
For the second year in a row, FONZ hosted a holiday Giving Tree
initiative that encouraged donations of enrichment items and funds
in support of the Zoo’s animal-enrichment program. Enrichment
includes the introduction of objects and other stimuli that encourage
the animals’ natural behaviors and provide stimulation and exercise. In
2007, the effort raised $19,000 and brought in a wide variety of items,
such as boomer balls, Kong toys, and cholla wood for animals, plus
tools animal keepers use to fashion enrichment objects.
FONZ volunteers contributed about 1,000 hours preparing animal
diets in the Zoo’s commissary.

30
ENGAGING ZOO
SUPPORTERS and PARTNERS
FONZ rallies support for the Zoo from a dedicated community of supporters and partners who share a commitment
to saving the world’s endangered wildlife—and who demonstrate that commitment through donations of funds and
services and many other efforts.
GOAL 2
Expand the
Partnership Relationship
with the National Zoo
and Other Partners

•
•
•
A snapshot of such community involvement in 2007 illustrates the wide-ranging support FONZ receives
from its members, volunteers, and other partners:
A near-record 40,000 households held FONZ membership in
2007, representing more than 100,000 people. Members are the
organization’s backbone, providing a major source of contributions and
spreading the word about FONZ and the Zoo. They are also the most
frequent participants in programs and events.
More than 1,800 FONZ-recruited and -trained volunteers—the largest
volunteer corps of any Smithsonian unit—contributed more than
105,000 hours educating visitors, assisting animal keepers, recording
animal behavior, and providing many other services.
FONZ’s events raise important funds for the Zoo and its programs
and attract thousands of Zoo- and wildlife-supporters, including key
corporate partners. In 2007, these included the children’s event Guppy
Gala, the culinary extravaganza ZooFari, the Brew at the Zoo beer
tasting, a Halloween trick-or-treating event called Boo at the Zoo,
and the inaugural ZooLights winter lights celebration. In addition to
engaging new supporters, these special events produced a net income of
more than $1 million in support of the Zoo’s animal care, conservation
science, education, and sustainability programs.
•
•
•
•
New and varied partnerships in 2007 included FONZ’s first
collaboration with an outside arts organization. FONZ worked
with Imagination Stage to develop an educational program that
complemented the musical production of “The Jungle Book.”
Safari Sleuths, a joint promotion of the Mandarin Oriental,
Washington, D.C. and FONZ, set visiting families on a scavenger hunt
at the Zoo’s Asia Trail as part of a travel package. This effort brought
hotel guests to the Zoo and allowed FONZ to put education and
fundraising materials into their hands.
Through FONZ media outreach—via print, web, radio, and
television—the public was informed of the organization’s events,
programs, and accomplishments.
FONZ’s major annual fundraiser, ZooFari, is made possible through
the time, talent, and great food and beverages donated by local
restaurateurs, chefs, and vintners. In 2007, a record 115 restaurants and
20 wineries helped make “Savanna Soirée” FONZ’s most successful
ZooFari ever.

32
BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE
At the National Zoo, habitat conservation means not only working to preserve land and resources for giant pandas
and dama gazelles, but also incorporating environmentally sound materials and practices in its own operations. In
promoting ecofriendly, sustainable practices to its visitors, FONZ and the Zoo strive to lead by example.
GOAL 3
Achieve
Organizational Excellence
and Financial Strength

•
•
•
•
Here are highlights of FONZ’s efforts to practice and promote sustainability in 2007:
FONZ reached out to the public to help make the Zoo a recycling site
A BRIGHT FUTURE
On its 50th anniversary, FONZ will work even harder to support the Smithsonian’s National Zoo as it continues
to stride toward the goal of being the world’s finest zoo by 2016. In 2008, the Zoo will complete a new facilities
master plan. The enhancements and projects drawn up in this plan will require FONZ to raise funds to help carry
them to fruition. Already, we are helping develop resources needed to build Elephant Trails, refresh and renovate
other exhibits, and support education and conservation programs. Slated for completion in 2011, Elephant Trails
will provide a cutting-edge facility for the Zoo’s Asian elephants, as well as a fascinating chance for visitors to see
elephant interactions in expanded, enriching indoor and outdoor settings.
To support these and other exciting Zoo endeavors, we will follow our own new strategic plan to make FONZ one
of the finest zoo-support organizations in the world. Our staff, board members, and volunteers will work to meet
these goals, but also must continue to rely upon the critical support provided by individuals, families, foundations,
and corporations that share our commitment to the Earth’s wildlife and its future.

•
Visitor Services recorded a second strong year of revenues in 2007,
which included new food choices, new store displays and merchandise
choices, and improved customer services.
Membership revenues exceeded $2.8 million from the generous
support of our many members and participation in exciting Zoo
programs, including Nature Camp, Snore & Roar overnights, and
ongoing educational classes for children of all ages.
Donors contributed an additional $2.8 million in 2007 and $4.5
million during 2006 and allowed FONZ to fund important programs
like the construction of a cheetah breeding facility at CRC, animal
enrichment, and critical medicine and veterinary support to the Zoo.
An additional $2.6 million and $160,000 in support was raised by
our development staff for the National Zoo but given directly to the
Smithsonian for the benefit of the National Zoo’s various projects.
Our new winter event ZooLights, helped bring in record revenues for
our Events department in 2007 by attracting about 40,000 visitors
during a traditionally slow time of year.
Investment income was successful in contributing more than $1
million dollars to the financial position of FONZ over the last
two years.
•
•
•
•
•
For the second straight year, the generous support of members, donors,
and visitors helped FONZ record revenues in excess of $21 million.
Visitor Services departments continue to enhance customer services at
a lower cost than in 2006.
Education and Communication expenses supported our 1,800
volunteers effort, innovative learning opportunities for schools and
the general public, and the publication of FONZ’s premier magazine,
ZooGoer.
FONZ has provided almost $9 million in direct cash support to
the National Zoo, including its active capital projects, over the last
two years.
In total, FONZ spent more than $40 million on various important
FONZ and Zoo programs during 2007 and 2006.
