Summer Camp Wrap-up
Wow, are we exhausted, but it sure was a fun summer for
all camp participants and staff here at the Newport Beach
Tennis Club. We served over 2000 lunches, averaged 60
kids in our Swing n Splash camp and 30 players per day in
our more advanced Ripper and Training Academy’s! We
feel strongly and passionately that every player was given
the proper tools to propel their game to the next level,
whether it was a beginner who began to harness proper
grip, footwork and stroke developmental, to our more advanced
players who began to play with controlled aggression
in tough match situations. Thanks to all NBTC families
who supported the program and we look forward to
providing a quality hands on experience in our coming Fall
After-School program ahead.
Anonymous Member: Can you give me some info on the latest strings
out there Tennis Guru, namely poly strings? All I keep hearing about is
poly string this, poly string that. Thanks!
Master Guru: Polyester strings have come a long way in the last 2 years
and whereas before where Luxilon dominated the market, more companies
are coming out with their own poly offerings: Solinco and Babolat to
name a few examples. The upsides of poly’s are numerous. they are durable
and good for players that break their strings a lot. They are suited for
those players who are baseliners that like to swing out on the ball, as the
spin generation from poly is seemingly higher than other string types although
this is also hotly debated.
The downside to poly for some is because you generate more spin on the
shot, the shot is heavy and could be more difficult to hit with pace to try to
close out a point. Also poly can be hard on the arm although manufacturers
like Babolat have created soft poly’s like RPM Blast to combat arm
fatigue. In addition, because the strings don’t break often, the strings will
lose tension and you may not realize it until its too late! You should still re
-string poly often to keep your preferred tension dialed in.
Many pros now play with poly or a hybrid set which uses gut or synthetic
gut along with a poly. This has the benefit of the control of gut and power
along with the spin of poly. Remember though that swing speed matters…
just like in golf where you want to fit the shaft flex to your type of
speed, so to do you want to match your swing speed and style with the
right string and racquet! Consult Mark in the pro shop for more info!
