EECS 354 Network Penetration and Security
Fall Quarter 2011
This course focuses on remote computer penetration (hacking) as well as protecting against such attacks.
The class introduces basic theory for many different types of attacks, then students actually carry them
out in ‘real-world’ settings. The goal is to learn security by learning how to view your machine from a
hacker’s perspective – focusing on the practical as well as theoretical aspects of security. Students will have
the opportunity to learn about securing a computer on a hostile network, data encryption, and recognizing
malicious traffic flowing through a network. Through the quarter, students will prepare for the 2010 UCSB
International Capture the Flag Competition (held each December). Capture the Flag is a network security
exercise where the goal is to exploit other machines while defending your own.
For major or minors in Computer Science, this course can satisfy the 1) systems breadth, 2) systems
depth and 3) security depth areas.
