Welcome to the Pirates of the Barnyard
Competition Handbook
Nevada County Fair August 8 through 12, 2007
Known far and wide as “California’s Most
Beautiful Fairgrounds”, the Nevada
County Fair will soon be welcoming all its
residents and visitors to the “Pirates of the
Barnyard!“ or simply put, “the biggest party of
the year!”
We are pleased to bring you the 2007 Competition
Handbook, which includes hundreds and hundreds of
classses in more than 350 still exhibit divisions—not to
mention the wide array of livestock competitions available.
You will be awed this year by the new “Treasures of
Nevada County” agricultural exhibit which will be
located in the Main Street Center building. Be sure and
check out the Permaculture Exhibit and catch one of the
demonstrations. In addition, there will be numerous
educational exhibits showcasing many of the locally grown
fabulous commodities that we have in our area. You will be
amazed!
“A Needle in a Haystack!”
If you are one of the first 50 people to enter an exhibit in
the Fair and notify us of the exact location of the needle
you will receive two tickets to the September 20th Draft
Horse Classic performance! Limit two tickets per family.
Entering Your Exhibits
If you enter still exhibits on line there are no entry fees!
Open livestock entries and non-market junior livestock
entries may be entered on-line as well. However, it is
imperative the entry form for all breeding classes be filled
out completely. Please visit our website at
www.nevadacountyfair.com for more information. If you
wish to enter by mail, both Youth & Teens and Senior
Still Exhibits entry forms are located on pages 133-136.
They must be received by the Fair Office no later than 1
p.m, July 21. The Fair Office mailing address is P. O. Box
2687, Grass Valley, CA 95945 and we are located at 11228
McCourtney Road, Grass Valley. Late entries, accepted
until July 27th, will be charged the original entry fee, plus
a $2 per exhibit post-entry fee. Postmarks will not be
accepted. The deadline for on-line entries will be Friday,
July 27 at 5 p.m. Deliver your still exhibits to the building
in which they will be displayed, and receive your entry
tags at that location. You will find the dates listed under
“Local Rules” for your particular category. Pages 26 and 27
give an entire listing of all categories, as well.
9
There are numerous new classes
this year to strike your fancy.
Just look for the crow!
Award System
Also, check out “New
Arrivals for 2007”on
page 23, and 93.
Judging
Judging of exhibits is done by either the Danish or the
American judging systems. In the Danish system, each
exhibit is judged according to how well it meets a product
standard rather than how it compares with other exhibits.
In the American judging system each entry in a class is
judged in comparison to other entries in the class. Awards
are given according to relative merit with the potential for
no more than one first, second, third per class.
There will be a Best of Show award for every “still”
division. It will be chosen from entries that receive 1st
place in the division. Every Best of Show winner will
receive a ribbon. In addition, if a particular division is
“sponsored,” the exhibitor will receive either cash, a gift
certificate or a savings bond. There will be a “sponsored”
Proud Tradition award for selected departments. It will be
chosen from all the entries that receive Best of Show in the
department. A People’s Choice award will be chosen from
entries in selected departments.
Pick Up Your Exhibits
Monday, August 13. We’re open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Premium checks will be available when you pick up your
items. Absolute deadline for picking up exhibits is Friday,
August 17th.
Draft Horse Classic & Harvest
exhibit competitions.

In Loving Memory
This 2007 Competition Handbook is lovingly
dedicated to Gladys “Nani” Short.
Gladys became an integral part of the Nevada
County Fair 23 years ago. She maintained her
Accounting Clerk and Head Cashier positions with
tremendous pride. She retired December of 2005,
but remained on staff for the 2006 Fair and Draft
Horse Classic.
Gladys was one of the Fair office personnel who
rarely got to see the actual fair. When she was not
in the office crunching numbers, she was out on
the grounds’ perimeter, hourly monitoring the five
entrance gates and three parking gates.
Arriving at the grounds about 6:30 each morning
of the Fair, Gladys usually didn’t leave until about
1 a.m. the next day, making the last deposit, figuring
how much money was taken in and counting the
number of people that passed through the Fair’s
gates. “Its busy and hectic, but I love every minute of
it,” she said. Gladys was never without a laugh or a
smile.
She loved the fact that so many people would get involved in Nevada County’s largest party. “Every
year’s a little different,” she said. “And it’s fun. We all enjoy it very much. Everyone just pitches in and
works so hard and so many long hours. It’s just fun to deal with so many people.”
Gladys was also known for her fabulous cooking ability. She would provide a gourmet meal, whether
cooking for a small gathering of staff members or hosting a Draft Horse Classic event with over 200
people. Her macaroni and potato salads were absolutely renowned!
Her nickname of “Nani” was so appropriate. There was never a child, or parent with a baby walking
into the office that Gladys didn’t get up from her desk and go to the counter to greet, talk to, or hug.
She was the ultimate mother and grandmother to her family.
Gladys passed away peacefully on October 4, 2006. She is so greatly missed! For her dedication
and love of the Fair, Gladys will be inducted into the Fair’s Hall of Fame on Wednesday, August 8th.
“ We were not ready
to have her laughter go
elsewhere.”
2006 Junior Livestock & Ag Mechanic Auction
One of the most important parts of the Nevada County Fair is the Junior Livestock Auction. Through the efforts of the
Nevada County Livestock Producers and The Nevada County Agricultural Youth Boosters, young people are given
the opportunity to raise an animal for market and sell it for, most often, more than the market price. This experience
leaves our Nevada County youth with a positive attitude towards agriculture, which remains with them as they go
into the business world. Evidence of this is the FFA and 4-H alumni that are currently very active members of the
Livestock Producers and the Ag Boosters. As individuals and business people of Nevada County, you can assist the
continuation of this program through your involvement in the 2007 Junior Livestock Auction to be held Sunday,
August 12, 2007, at 8 am. The Ag Mechanic Auction will be Friday, August 10, 2007 at 5 pm. For further information
on the Sale, contact the Fair Office at 273-6217.
