Ajcuth-Health for Ocean City
daean City ii ffr&effally recognized a§ a pretty
healthy community, Lotsr of people come here to convaU
escc, to'repair shattered nerves, to whet jaded appe-
Utm, to put coior back into faded cheeks. They cavort
- on our beach, swim in our surf, toughen flabby muscles
"ukoar beach cJass, breathe our invigorating sea air and
drink our pure, sparkling water.
And finally they go home and laugh at dull care,
hard work—and doctori.
Nevertheless there is some sickness her©. Some of
us juit fe#l out of sorts; not up to what we should be
health and efficiency. Often the cause is ignorance,
lert or just plain proerastinatign and earslessntss.
This situation prevails throughout the nation. And
the nation is worried about it, now that the war de-
mands we all be fit and strong, if we are to win.
It hai been found, for instance, that 999 out of
every 1000 are suffering from some sort of mal-nutrt-
tlon—starving because they lack some necessary vita.
tun, Half of our 180,000,000 people have poor teeth,
A large part of American men, women and children
have faulty foot and body posture.
Physical ailments often are caused by mental ills—
^/orry and illusions that would not exist if the body were
.strong and normal. _
A national campaign to-inform the public of these
facts and to tell people how to remedy them is now un=
of directing the health program for Octan City. It will
include neighborhood classes throughout the resort, at
which health talks will be given i a health program in
Hcxfe You Volunteered Your Blood Yet?
*' Elsewhere on this page, a noted physician explains
* why *'blood banks" are so essential for America, both
©a tier lighting and industrial fronts,
A vast amount of blood is needed quickly from vol=
Dcn'i Leave Your Lights On
The surprise blackout tegt that caught Ocean City
ofT guard Friday night again showed up weaknesses that
should no longer exist, in view of previous experiences
tl at should have taught a lasting lesson.
We refer In particular to people who had gone out
frrthe evening, locked their doors and left their lights
burning, Had there been a real air raid, these homes
wiuid have been excellent beacons for enemy fliers.
Another weakness, as pointed out by Mayor Rich-
aids, was a shortage of wardens. Many either have
> gone into the armed services or into war work.
The only way this ihortage—and it is serious—can
b-» overcome, is for more men and women to volunteer
their services to Mayor Richards, chairman of Ocean
City's Civilian Defense Council, The shortage also exists
in personnel to man the watch tower, on the Music Pier,
Telephoni the Mayor at city hall (20) and tell him
