Flu clinics slated for area schools
Tuscola County Health Department
officials are implementing their
planned H1N1 flu clinics in the
county’s school districts this week.
The Cass City Schools will host a
clinic from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday,
although a specific location had
not been designated at press time.
The Kingston Community Schools,
meanwhile, are scheduled to host a
clinic Monday, Dec. 7, from 4:15 to
6:15 p.m. in the elementary cafeteria,
and the USA Schools’ clinic will be
held Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the elementary
cafeteria (same times).
More information, including a com-
Christmas in the Village
events on tap Saturday
Cass City’s annual Christmas in the Village extravaganza will kick off Saturday
with activities for the entire family, from a chili cook-off to a colorful
winter parade to visits with Santa Claus himself.
The day’s events include a large craft show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Baker
College.
The Cass Theatre will be offering a free matinee of the “Bee Movie” for all
ages, with the doors opening at 1:30 p.m. The theatre will offer another free
matinee Saturday, Dec. 12, featuring “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
Another popular attraction is the Christmas in the Village Chili Cook-Off,
now in its sixth year and again sponsored and organized by Knight Insurance
Agency, Cass City. The contest will offer more incentives this year for the
contestants, according to Amy Peters.
“There have been some years where only a vote or 2 stands between the top
places, so we’ve expanded the cash prizes to incorporate second and third
places,” she explained. “We have seen some pretty stiff competition in previous
years and I’m sure it will be a close race again this year for the coveted
chili trophy.”
Here’s how it works: “chefs” at several local businesses will be preparing
their best chili recipes. Residents can wander through town tasting each one
after purchasing a ticket to participate ($3 for adults and $1 for kids ages 12
and under). Once tasters sample the different chilis, they can cast their ballot
at any participating business.
“Like we’ve done in the past, a drawing will be held for $100 in Cass City
Cash given to the first voting ballot drawn out,” Peters said, noting the tasting
will end at 3 p.m., the ballots will be tallied and the winner will be announced
at Knight Insurance Agency, 6468 Main St.
A record 183 votes were cast in the contest last year, when Carol Wright’s
venison chili, served with a variety of condiments at Chemical Bank, clinched
the chili crown.
Santa Claus will make his grand entrance during the fifth annual Lighted
Christmas Parade, which is slated to get underway at 6 p.m., starting at Cass
City Memorial Park and continuing west to the Cass City VFW Hall.
“Everyone is invited to join us for this great family event,” commented parade
organizer Richard Little. “There will be over 30 lighted entries, including
local clubs, churches, youth groups, farm implements, several businesses and
the Cass City High School Marching Band.
“There will be trophies awarded for each category and, of course, Santa Claus
himself will also be riding on a special float, and children may have their pictures
take right after the parade with him and Mrs. Claus at the VFW hall,”
Little said.
The photos are being made available compliments of Thumb National Bank,
and every child who visits Santa will receive a small gift and also be signed
up for the children’s prize drawing being held that night.
Residents can also enjoy the annual community gathering featuring free hot
bean soup, hot chocolate, cookies, popcorn, caramel apples and carriage rides.
Everyone is invited to return to the VFW hall a week later, Saturday, Dec.
12, to enjoy the “Breakfast with Santa Claus” gathering, which will begin at
9 a.m. The event is free for kids ages 11 and under, $2 for adults).
Also underway is a residential/business decorating contest, but participants
must sign up by Monday, Dec. 7 (contact the Cass City Chamber of Commerce
Office at 872-4618 for details). Judging will be Friday, Dec. 18, and
cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.
plete list of clinics, is available by
calling the health department at (989)
673-8114.
“Parents or legal guardians must be
present,” noted Ann Hepfer, Tuscola
County Health Department nursing
administrator. “You can attend any of
the school clinics that will meet your
needs. Out-of-county children who
attend area schools will not be turned
away.”
The vaccine is free of charge, and the
clinics are open to the public, but
Hepfer said officials will be following
the Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) guidelines by administering
vaccines to the following specific priority
groups:
*Pregnant women.
*Persons who live with or provide
care for infants under the age of 6
months (parents, siblings and daycare
providers).
*Healthy children and young adults
between the ages of 2 and 24 years.
These groups will receive nasal spray,
which is the live attenuated vaccine,
compared to the inactivated vaccine.
*Persons between the ages of 6
months and 64 years who have medical
conditions associated with a high
risk of influenza complications will
receive the injectable vaccine. Those
who are eligible include those with diabetes,
asthma, COPD, emphysema,
cancer, blood disorders, heart disease,
kidney disorders, liver disorders,
epilepsy, cerebral palsy, brain or
spinal cord injuries, moderate to profound
intellectual disability or developmental
delays, muscular dystrophy,
multiple sclerosis, and weakened immune
systems. Those who have undergone
an organ transplant or are on
medications that weaken the immune
system also qualify.
“Even though the (number of) fluillnesses
appears to be improving at
this day, it is anticipated that there
could be a second wave of the illness
during the winter months,” Hepfer
said.
“CDC recommends that most people
should be vaccinated with the 2009
H1N1 vaccine regardless of whether
they had a flu-like illness earlier in the
year. If a person had a confirmed laboratory
test of the H1N1 virus, they
should have some immunity against
the 2009 H1N1 flu and could choose
not to be vaccinated. However, vaccination
of a person with some existing
immunity...would not be
harmful.”
Custodians
file lawsuit
by Tom Montgomery
Editor
Unable to convince the Cass City
Board of Education to reverse its decision
to privatize the district’s custodial
services, Cass City’s former
custodians are targeting the company
now providing those services.
And they’re taking their case to
court.
The Cass City Educational Support
Personnel Association, MEA/NEA,
the union that represented the custodians,
recently filed a civil lawsuit in
Tuscola County Circuit Court.
Named as the defendant is D.M. Burr
Facilities Management Inc.
The case stems from the Cass City
Board of Education’s decision last
June to privatize custodial services, a
move school officials said would save
the district some $180,000 and would
enable them to reduce expenses without
directly affecting the education of
students.
The savings came by way of the difference
in D.M Burr’s bid of
$204,288, compared to the $385,000
Cass City Schools was paying for
custodial services. D.M. Burr officials
stated their bid was based on
paying their employees a starting
wage of $8.50 to $9 an hour with no
benefits.
The decision to privatize cost 6 custodians
their jobs. At the time, they
were working under a contract that
was effective July 1, 2008, through
Council expects less
revenue next year
by Clarke Haire
Publisher
Just like most local government officials
throughout Michigan, Cass
City Village Manager Peter Cristiano
and the village council are expecting
to battle a decrease in revenues next
year.
During Monday’s regular meeting of
the village council, Cristiano presented
the proposed 2010 Village of
Cass City Operating Budget that he
called “conservative and realistic in
its estimates.”
Still, total revenues for 2010 are expected
to decrease by nearly $100,000
from current year estimates, slipping
to $3,791,249, while expenses continue
to rise.
The major source of capital for the
village’s 8 operating funds — that
comprise the operating budget - are
property taxes and state-shared revenues.
Property tax dollars are spread
among 4 funds, according to Cristiano,
including the General, Major
Street, Local Street and Downtown
Development Authority.
Although the rate for property tax
revenues will remain unchanged in
2010 at 18.1387 mills, meaning the
owner of a house with a market value
of $80,000 and a tax base of $40,000
would pay roughly $725 for the year,
Cristiano declared about a 4-percent
decrease in taxable values is anticipated.
“The theme that runs through this
proposed budget is one of maximizing
available resources, both physical
and human, to continue an exceptional
quality of life for residents of
Cass City,” Cristiano said.
In addition to the loss of tax dollars,
village officials are expecting to receive
11 percent less, about $17,000,
in state-shared revenues in 2010 that
are spread over the General, Major
Street and Local Street funds.
Despite having less to spend next
year, Cristiano vowed to keep the
same high level of village services by
being more efficient and aggressively
seeking grant money.
For example, at the Helen Stevens
Memorial Pool, plans call for switching
the chlorine-operated facility to a
saline-operated pool. Over a 5-year
period, the new operating system will
reduce chemical supplies by $50,000.
Cristiano also reported that although
the cost of living has increased 3 percent,
no cost-of-living increases are
planned for village workers, while
employees’ health insurance costs
have been adjusted to a one-percent
increase by increasing deductibles.
Expenses in the proposed 2010
spending plan, that will be offset
partly by a 4-percent increase in water
and sewer rates, call for the purchase
or lease of a 2010 Crown Victoria for
the Cass City Police Department,
completing the SCADA system at the
Wastewater Treatment Plant, replacing
fire hydrants and a new leaf vac-
uum.
Cristiano also stated plans are in the
works for a front blade for the grader,
a paint buggy, a dump truck and Vac-
All Truck with JetVac.
“This equipment will replace aging
equipment and provide safety for our
DPW-Water employees.”
A public hearing for the 2010 budget
will be held Monday, Dec. 14, beginning
at 7 p.m. The proposed budget
may be examined on weekdays at the
municipal building from 8 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
Sex crime
convictions
net Barry
15-30 years
The Reese woman charged with sexually
assaulting a 15-month-old
Reese child will spend the next 15 to
30 years of her life in prison.
That was
the sentence
handed
down last
week in Tuscola
County
Circuit
Court, where
Melissa Sue
Barry, 29,
previously
pleaded
guilty to 2
counts of
first degree
Melissa Barry
criminal sexual conduct involving the
child nearly a year ago, in January
2009 in Denmark Township.
One count of second degree criminal
sexual conduct and 3 counts of third
degree child abuse were dismissed in
the case, and Barry was ordered to
pay court costs and fines totaling
$196.
Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark E.
Reene asked the court to impose a
prison term of no less than 30 years,
given what he called Barry’s especially
disturbing crimes against a
child.
Barry was not a relative of the victim,
but was residing with the victim
and the victim’s family during the
time the assaults took place. The defendant
attended school in the area,
but she was most recently a resident
of Arenac County, according to the
prosecutor, who said she had been
hired to care for the victim after his
mother was injured in a traffic accident.
Prior to her latest appearances in
court, Barry was examined at the
Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti,
and she was found to be competent
to stand trial.

Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row,
column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by
using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers
Drivers -- play it
safe this month
Michigan has the highest rate of seatbelt use in the nation,
with an impressive 97.9 percent of motorists buckling
up.
But a number of drivers still ignore this simple safety
measure. And, Michigan Office of Highway Safety
Planning (OHSP) statistics indicate many motorists
continue to ignore the dangers associated with drinking
alcohol and then getting behind the wheel, endangering
not only their own lives, but also the lives of others.
With the holiday season in full swing now, we’d like
to take the time to repeat the message offered by OHSP
officials: buckle up and arrange for a designated driver
this year.
The facts are sobering: over the past 5 years, Michigan
has averaged 14 traffic deaths during the Thanksgiving
holiday period. Last year, 13 people died in traffic
crashes in the state — 10 of those fatalities involved alcohol
and 8 of those who died were not buckled up.
Throughout 2008, of the 841 vehicle occupants who
died in traffic crashes, 244 were not restrained. On average,
roughly 35 percent of all traffic fatalities in
Michigan involve alcohol and/or drugs.
Two dozen people died in traffic crashes during the
2008 Christmas and New Year’s holidays, including 3
fatalities confirmed to be alcohol or drug related.
Those figures haven’t escaped the attention of local,
county and state law
enforcement agencies, which continue to conduct
stepped-up campaigns involving seatbelt use and
drunken driving.
During last year’s “Over the Limit. Under Arrest”
campaign, Dec. 19-Jan. 4, law enforcement officers
across Michigan arrested 365 impaired drivers, averaging
22 arrests per day. On top of that, police officers
made nearly 200 other misdemeanor and felony arrests
and issued 163 seatbelt, 707 speeding and 238 uninsured
motorist citations.
During that crackdown, some 200 agencies worked for
more than 7,500 enforcement hours, resulting in 7,313
traffic stops and 4,558 citations or arrests.
Beyond the cost of human life, getting arrested for
drunken driving will cost you plenty.
A first-time drunken driving conviction carries penalties
that include up to 93 days in jail, up to a $500 fine,
up to 360 days of community service, 6 points on a driver’s
license, and up to 190 days worth of license suspension.
In addition, convicted drunken drivers are subject to a
$1,000 fee for 2 consecutive years, for a total of $2,000
in extra costs. And, anyone who refuses a breath test
the first time is given an automatic one-year driver’s license
suspension.
Those penalties pale in comparison to a life cut short,
or having to live with the guilt of causing someone
else’s death.
Be smart this holiday season; fasten your seatbelt and
designate a driver.
This year as the winter sports season
commences, a new face can be seen
alongside the varsity boys’ team; a
long time sports lover and known
around school as someone who always
tells you “hi”.
Eddie Vogel’s dream of being involved
in sports has finally come true.
A senior and the new team manager,
Eddie can be found at almost every
practice, blowing the whistle, running
drills, and giving encouragement to
the players.
To get an idea of how special this
truly is for him, you must know that
when Eddie was just an infant, he was
diagnosed with muscular dystrophy
or MD, a degenerative disease in
which the body’s muscles slowly
decay. Eddie has suffered from this
his whole life, yet he has not let it beat
him down. And though there is no
known cure, he does not regard this
fact or his predicted short life span as
an absolute.
He learned to walk at a young age,
and did not notice the difference between
him and other kids until middle
school when sports teams were
formed. It was then that he realized
he couldn’t physically participate in
some of his favorite pastimes because
of his inability to run, something he’s
always struggled with.
Yet, he did not let this keep him from
practicing outside school.
Amber Warju, a friend of Eddie’s
from their church, reflected on playing
with him. She recalled, “I would
be practicing in our church’s gym and
Eddie would walk in and begin shooting
hoops with me.”
And though Eddie may appear to be
too frail to accomplish such a feat as
shooting hoops, he amazingly can by
using his own techniques. These
techniques are ones that he has been
able to share with kids his own age
through the years at summer camp for
kids with MD. According to him,
only about 4 kids, including him, at
this camp still had the ability to walk,
while the rest were confined to wheelchairs.
“Going to camp made me feel really
lucky that I could still walk,” he commented,
“I would always show everyone
how to shoot hoops my way.”
This past September, wanting to get
more involved in high school sports
than just watching from the sidelines,
Eddie asked Athletic Director Mr.
Markel what was possible. Eddie was
then directed to Mr. Green, the new
varsity coach, who made him team
manager. Today you can find Eddie
with the team nearly every day, and
his presence has proved popular with
the players.
Alex Varney, a junior and varsity
player, commented, “It’s great. Eddie
really lightens the mood and keeps
things encouraging.”
Kyle Pine, student statistician for the
team, agreed. “I know Ed has always
loved basketball so it’s good seeing
him with the team,” he said.
In the realm of sports, Eddie speaks
of his favorite basketball player, Craig
Emmert, a past graduate of Cass City
High School. “He was a good player
that I knew from church and a nice
guy that had integrity,” Eddie remarked.
As far as this season goes, though
uncertain, Jeff Mulrath, a varsity
player, predicted, “I think we will surprise
people.”
And whether things go good or bad,
the varsity team can rest assured that
Eddie Vogel will be there, encouraging
them the whole way through.
Reporter’s notebook
Black Friday shopping?
Definitely not for me
by Tom Montgomery
Editor
I can’t think of one thing I want so
badly that I’d get up at 2 a.m., stand
in line for more than 10 minutes or
fight traffic to purchase.
Evidently, thousands of other Michigan
residents are willing to do just
that the day after Thanksgiving.
That’s what Black Friday was all
about. Retailers rolled out the red carpet
with claims of huge bargains, and
they hoped shoppers would clog their
stores at the crack of dawn, or earlier.
Black Friday was the official start of
the Christmas shopping rush. But all
I can envision is people getting up
early to fight it out for the best bargains
at the retailers of their choice.
They can have it.
But in all fairness, I’m not a shopper,
never have been.
I mean, what’s the big rush? I have
a good idea of how much I have to
spend on Christmas gifts, who I need
to buy for and what they want. There
are still plenty of days to shop, and
my guess is the bargains will be there
throughout December, given the competition
stores are facing as the state’s
economy continues to nosedive and
there are few precious dollars out
there to spend.
I don’t mind shopping. I just don’t
consider it to be a sport, challenge, or
art form. Groceries, for example. My
technique bears no resemblance to my
wife’s approach, especially these
days.
My strategy has always been simple:
get into the store, locate what I want,
grab it, pay for it and get out. Period.
I’ve never felt the need or had the patience
to look at 8 different brands of
green beans, or to see if this product
or that offers a 50-cent coupon on my
next purchase.
Maybe it’s a guy thing, but I know
exactly which brands of ketchup and
mustard I like. Same for salad dressing,
pickles, barbecue sauce, etc.
My wife, Deb, however, is big into
coupon shopping, purchasing bundles
of various coupons over the Internet
and, to be honest, making a killing on
her grocery shopping trips. She saves
a great deal of money that way, often
coming home with items that she is
paid to take out of the store, after
plopping down a handful of those
money savers.
I admire her for that, but have absolutely
no interest in following suit,
which is why she does the lion’s share
of grocery shopping lately.
As for Christmas shopping, I’m glad
I was writing copy instead of spending
8 hours Christmas shopping, as
some members of my family did Friday.
Seems to me, the day after Thanksgiving
can be put to better use, like
watching television and piling another
plate high with turkey, dressing and
the works.
This is a good time to work on my
records. I’ve resolved not to do anything
crazy.
I still can’t understand why my dog
isn’t considered a dependent. Nobody
else is claiming him.
That’s why we keep records, I suppose.
My accounting isn’t very good,
but I do try to keep everything
straight.
One of my biggest mistakes was the
time I underpaid federal unemployment
tax on my employee. A glitch in
my computer worksheet caused me to
under-report wages by about $200.
This led to an underpayment of federal
unemployment in the amount of
$1.94. When I found the error, I
promptly sent the IRS a check for
$1.94.
I wonder what it costs the government
to process a check for $1.94?
They probably thought I was fooling
with them.
My error reminded me of the story a
friend told me about an old codger he
used to know. This fellow (we’ll call
him Ralph) delighted in irritating the
government.
Ralph had a little plot of land that
was pretty much worthless when he
bought it. The property had no buildings,
and the tax assessment was only
18 cents.
Over the years Ralph built his house
out of some wood he found lying
around. Then, he built a shop and
began piling-up scrap iron, just in
case he might ever need it.
I should explain, those were the days
when a man might build his own
house without permits — and get
away with it. If the house fell on him,
everyone just chalked it up to education.
So the county assessor might not
have known Ralph had some improvements
on his property. Or if the
assessor knew, he may not have cared.
The neighbors said it would take a
pretty good stretch of imagination to
call Ralph’s buildings improvements,
anyway; so 18 cents was probably
about right.
Either way, the taxes never went up
or down. Each spring Ralph got a bill
for property taxes in the outrageous
amount of 18 cents.
The old rascal would pay his taxes
right on time, but he never sent them
18 cents. He would always send a
quarter, so the assessor’s office had to
buy a 12-cent stamp to refund his
overpayment of seven cents.
That way the county received 18
cents, but it cost them 12 cents to collect
it. They actually only got 6 cents
out of the deal! Pretty good, huh?
It was all part of the Sagebrush Rebellion
from Ralph’s point of view.
He never could understand what the
county was doing with all of that
money, anyway.
I thought about Ralph when I wrote
that check for $1.94 and sent it to the
IRS. I can’t say that transaction made
me feel any better, but I’ll bet it didn’t
exactly make their day, either.
Arnie Karr, Wildlife Habitat Biologist for the Department of Natural Resources,
tells that as of Monday about 550 deer have been examined at the
Cass City check station.
That’s about equal to last year, Karr said, but noted he’s definitely seen an
increase in both 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old deer brought to his building during
the 2009 firearms season.
**********
Have you noticed an increase in the number of black squirrels roaming the
village streets? Karr declares nothing unusual there; the squirrels are just a
genetic phase of the gray squirrel and are common in populated areas.
HDC program
helps residents
to buy homes
As recently announced, the federal
government has extended its First-
Time Homebuyer Tax Credit until
June 30, 2010, but that’s not the only
reason that right now is an ideal time
to purchase a first home.
In addition to lower interest rates and
an abundance of great priced homes,
the Human Development Commission
(HDC) has a program available
to help make the dream of homeownership
come true for qualified first
time homebuyers.
The HDC’s Homebuyer
Purchase/Rehab program (HPR)
helps individuals and families with a
down payment and closing costs in
order to make a home more affordable.
The HPR program also provides
assistance with needed repairs to create
a safe, healthy living environment.
Applications for the program are reviewed
on a first-come, first-served
basis. There are certain requirements
that homebuyers must meet to qualify
for the HPR program. Applicants
must have an annual income between
40 percent and 80 percent of the area
median income (based on family size
and county of residence), attend a
homebuyer orientation class as well
as contribute 1 percent of the purchase
price with their own money.
If you or someone you know is considering
purchasing their first home,
Bock said the Cass City Schools’
school nurse, physical education
teachers, Bock and a board representative,
recently completed a 7-hour
$200 May 9-10 in Indianfields Township.
He was also ordered to complete 240
costs and fines totaling $1,461. Attorneys
Floyd N. Haney, 51, Bay City,
she said, adding the staff plans to review
various health curriculums and
look at possibly purchasing some additional
physical education equipment
for students to use. If money is available,
Bock continued, the staff may
After a school completes its assessment,
it receives a list of action items
The school then implements a policy
that enables it to launch a new initiative
to promote physical activity or
“By completing the assessment, the
of health programs for the
Michigan Fitness Foundation.
“As the largest non-profit health insurance
company in the state,
BSBSM is uniquely committed to
helping enhance the communities
where we live and work,” said Diane
Valade, BCBSM director of social
initiatives that advance
their mission to promote access to
high-quality, affordable health care
coverage and improve the health of
Michigan residents, particularly children
and seniors.
“By targeting critical public health
issues, such as childhood obesity, we
believe the overall health of Michigan
residents can be improved significantly,”
Valade added. “Teaching
children the importance of healthy
them adopt healthier behaviors, which
they will hopefully carry with them
into adulthood.”

Down Memory Lane
With all but one of the wrestlers returning
from last year’s second place
squad and with the largest squad in
the 19 years that coach Don Markel
has been at the helm, prospects are
bright for the Cass City Red Hawks.
Among the 33 players on the squad
there are 9 returning lettermen that
earned all conference honors by placing
in the top 3 in the Greater Thumb
League. Among the 9 all-conference
players returning is Lee Hutchinson,
275 pounds, who qualified for the regionals
in the tourney last year. The
all-conference players include 4 seniors,
a junior and 4 sophomores. The
seniors are Hutchinson, Jeff Tenbusch,
Wes Baker and Marcel Helland.
Steve Meeker is the junior and
Jeremy Farr, Kyle Reif, Micah Randall
and Kyle Sieradzki are the sophomores.
In addition, there are 10
other letter winners with varsity
wrestling experience.
Old man winter finally arrived last
week, and just in time to give area
youngsters an opportunity to play in
the snow during their Thanksgiving
break.
When Delores Williams closed the
former Sutter’s Bakery after purchasing
the business, she figured it would
take about a week to complete some
renovations before re-opening. That
was 4 months ago. Bringing the Main
Street restaurant and bakery up to
state code turned out to be much more
extensive and time consuming than
Williams expected, but all of the work
and final inspections paid off Monday
at 6 a.m. when she opened the doors
at the new Cass City Restaurant and
Bakery. Within the first 10 minutes
she had 5 customers sipping coffee,
eating and talking.
North Central Thumb League champion
Kingston highlighted the
league’s All-Conference cage team
selections with 2 first team picks.
Named to the dream team from the
Cardinals were seniors Beth Hunter
and Jesse Kaniszewski. Also from
Kingston receiving 2nd team accolades
was junior Amanda Souva,
while Jennifer Jobson received honorable
mention.
Bulldog junior Danielle Fritz was
elected to the 2nd team as the lone
representative from Owen-Gage to receive
all-conference honors.
Larry Buehrly bagged a nice 8-point
buck, his first in 23 years of hunting,
Thanksgiving weekend hunting
northeast of Cass City. The buck field
student and member of Alma College
basketball team. She played in the
Scottie Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Friday Ulfig scored 11 points before
fouling out in a loss to Indiana
Wesleyan. Saturday in a win over
Franklin College, she scored 16
points and led the rebounders with 14
boards. Another former Thumb athlete,
freshman Kristie Gehrs from
Laker High, came off the bench to
score 18 points for Alma.
This August, Dee Smith left a secure
position as a secretary for the Mc-
Comb Elementary School and hung
out her shingle as the entrepreneur of
Pineberry Collections, a dealer of antiques,
collectables, and handcrafted
items. Smith and her husband, Lowell,
spent about a year of part time
work preparing to open the business
at their home at 4651 Jacob Rd., Cass
City. During this time they attended
countless auctions and household
sales, purchasing items to resell. The
name for the business, Pineberry Collections,
comes from the abundant
supply of wild berries and pine trees
that grow on the 38 acres that surround
their home.
Do you feel that it is right for doctors
to implant artificial hearts, or hearts
from animals to keep a person alive?
“Yes, I feel that it is right to keep people
alive,” said Brenda Gibson, 14, a
ninth grade student at Cass City High
School. She said that she would have
it done to keep a family member
alive, if that was the only way that
they would survive. She added that it
did bother her that people such as the
late Barney Clark and William J.
Schroeder, the two people who have
received artificial hearts, are so confined
to the room because of the size
of the machine that keeps the heart
For Mr. and Mrs. Barton Hurford of
The couple, who have worked for the
years, plan to call it quits Dec. 31.
And, while both plan to enjoy being
away from the responsibility and
daily grind, each candidly admits it
will be a little hard to stay away. Mrs.
Hurford has served as food service director
for the Ubly schools since
1945. Her husband began his career
at Ubly schools in 1941 as a custodian
and stayed at it until 1943, when he
took over a bus route for the next four
years. “When we started driving, the
school only had four buses,” Hurford
recalled. “Now we’ve got 21.” Following
this stint, he returned as a custodian,
holding the job of chief
maintenance supervisor today.
Cass City’s Girl’s Basketball team
propelled itself into the district tourney
Monday night. For Cass City, Marci
Lakers, Tammy Ellenbaum scored 20
DTE urges customers to be cautious
of impostors posing as utility workers
DTE Energy and its Detroit Edison
and MichCon subsidiaries are warning
customers to look out for con
artists posing as utility workers in
order to gain access to homes and personal
property. These impostors often
prey upon senior citizens.
“Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous
people out there who may pose
as Detroit Edison and MichCon employees
to take advantage of our customers,”
said Michael Lynch, DTE
Energy’s director of corporate security.
“We urge customers to be cautious
to prevent these criminals from
entering their homes.”
One common scam involves thieves
posing as utility employees, asking
$413/mo
0% for 60 months**
plus $1,000 00 *
(M-81) Downtown Cass City
the homeowner for payment of an
outstanding bill and threatening to
shut off service if it’s not paid on the
spot. Sometimes these thieves work in
pairs. One will distract the homeowner
while the other searches the
house for money and other valuables.
“DTE Energy employees never collect
money from customers at their
homes or businesses,” said Lynch. “If
someone comes to your door claiming
to be a DTE Energy employee and
asks for payment, call the police.”
DTE Energy field employees carry
photo identification badges that identify
them as DTE Energy employees.
Customers who are not sure about an
employee’s identification, or who
want to verify the nature of the work
to be done at their homes, should call
DTE Energy at (800) 477-4747.
“We want customers to know that if
they have any questions about someone
claiming to represent Detroit Edison
or MichCon, they can call us for
verification before they open their
doors,” said Lynch.
It is a felony for people to impersonate
public utility workers, whether or
not they actually gain entrance to a
home and commit a crime.
Lynch said customers should keep
the following tips in mind to avoid becoming
a victim:
• All Detroit Edison and MichCon
employees and contractors carry
photo identification badges, and are
required to display their badge if
asked. Customers are encouraged to
ask for identification.
• Do not allow people into your home
who claim to offer a Detroit Edison or
MichCon refund. DTE Energy employees
NEVER deliver cash refunds
or rebates to customers’ homes. DTE
Energy employees also NEVER collect
money from customers at their
homes.
• Do not pay for tree-trimming work
by individuals claiming to be from
Detroit Edison or a Detroit Edison
contractor. The utility does not charge
for line clearance work. Additionally,
before tree-trimming crews enter a
neighborhood for scheduled line
clearance work, customers are notified
about the work to be done.
• Call the police if you believe the
person at your door is a con artist posing
as a utility worker.
ready to open
2009-10 season
Veteran Coach Don Markel’s Cass
City wrestling team will feature 16 returning
letter winners tonight
(Wednesday) when the Red Hawks
open their 2009-10 campaign in
Imlay City.
Markel, entering his 25th season in
charge of the Red Hawk program,
will have 9 starters back from last
year’s squad that finished as the runner-up
in the Greater Thumb Conference
standings with a 6-2 record,
28-17 overall.
A trio of regional qualifiers from
2009 will be the backbone of this
year’s team. Senior Kevven Dorland,
Cass City’s only returning state qualifier
from a year ago, will fill the 140pound
slot in the starting line-up. He
finished with a 36-24 mark last year,
often wrestling in the 145-pound
weight class for the good of the team.
Regional qualifiers Jon Crouch, junior,
and Josh Jenson, sophomore, are
expected to be much improved with a
year’s experience under their belts
and will be counted on to better last
year’s marks of 36-21 and 42-15, respectively.
Crouch will wrestle in the
119-pound division, while Jensen fills
the team’s 171-pound weight class.
Other key returnees include seniors
Dean Rabideau, Eric Reif and T.J.
Marker. All recorded winning marks
as juniors. Rabideau posted a 31-21
record last year working in mostly the
160-pound weight class, while Reif
and Marker combined for 54 victo-
ries.
Also returning to the mats for the
Red Hawks this season are juniors
Cody Crouch, Marius Weilbach and
Michael Milligan, as are sophomores
Ron Wolschlager, Jim Merchant,
Nick Adkins and Cody Pringle.
“We will field a competitive team
this season. The key to our success
will rest in the hands of several
wrestlers who will be in the varsity
line-up for the first time. I look for our
team to continually improve as the
season progresses and pull off some
upsets to put ourselves in position to
compete for a league championship,”
Markel said.
Among the newcomers are freshmen
Garrett Ferguson, Bobbie Beyette,
Justin Ferguson, Nick McCoy and
Austin Baker.
As usual, Markel is downplaying his
team’s potential when it comes to
Greater Thumb Conference competition.
“Saginaw Nouvel and Marlette are
the front runners as we enter the
2009-10 season. Coach Cal Hayward,
Marlette, and Coach Mark Cooper,
Mayville, are both outstanding
coaches and have a proven track
record of success,” Markel said.
However, with only 4 key graduation
losses from 2009 - in Jacques Weilbach,
Travis Mabe, Bryan Burk, and
state qualifier Clark Walsh - expect
Cass City to be in the hunt for league
honors at the end of the season.
CASS CITY, MICHIGAN CASS CITY CHRONICLE - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2009 PAGE SEVEN
Green returns to
lead Cass City
boys’ basketball
Jim Green’s first time around as Cass
City’s boys’ head basketball coach
has Red Hawk fans trusting the district’s
program is in good hands.
Green, with 6 years of varsity coaching
experience, was the leader of the
Red Hawk cage program for 2 short
years, the 2000 and
2001 seasons, before
taking a break to spend
more time with his
young children.
In 2001, senior Craig
Emmert led Cass City
to its last championship
banner and an
impressive 13-1 mark
in the Greater Thumb
West. In Green’s
rookie season the Red
Hawks captured a
Class B district title,
advanced to the regional
final, and finished
16-8 overall.
Emmert finished his
distinguished career
becoming the new state record holder
in blocked shots and scoring 1,266
points, second on Cass City’s all-time
career scoring list.
However, this time around saying
Green’s roster lacks a superstar is seeing
the glass have full.
Green, a high school science teacher,
takes over for Aaron Fernald, who
guided Cass City for the last 7 years.
He’ll need to replace 7 seniors from
the 2009 squad that finished 4-8 in the
Greater Thumb West, 12-11 overall.
“Our success will depend on the
amount of leadership our returning
players provide and how much our inexperienced
players develop and contribute,”
Green said.
Finding bodies to replace Chris
Summersett and Austin Babich, both
first team all-conference performers
in their senior year, and Brent Doerr,
honorable mention recipient now
playing for Delta College, will be crit-
ical for success during the season
which begins Tuesday at home in
non-conference play with Sandusky.
The most likely candidates to fill the
huge scoring void created by the
team’s graduation losses are 5 returning
letter winners, including senior
guards Jeff Mulrath
“Our success will
depend on the
amount of leadership
our returning
players provide and
how much our inexperienced
players
develop and contribute.”
and Trevor Phillips,
and juniors Alex
Varney, Justin Ketterer
and Cameron
Dunnuck.
Mulrath and Ketterer
posses a
golden touch from
the perimeter, while
Varney drives to the
hoop as well as any
player in the
Greater Thumb
West.
“Varney, Mulrath
and Ketterer will be
counted on to provide
leadership and
good decision making,”
Green said. “Dunnuck will need
to provide interior defense and scoring.”
Dunnuck is the team’s lone player
that stands above 6’ 2” tall.
Making their varsity debut this season
will be juniors Nick Brown and
Chris Hool and senior Aaron Bader,
all who saw plenty of action at the
junior varsity level last season.
Also new to the varsity ranks this
season are seniors Paul Rubey, Andy
Knight and Josiah Battel, along with
juniors Rob Wolschleger and Matt
Goniwicha. All should see playing
time in the early going as Green experiments
with different line-ups before
the start of conference action,
which he feels should be highly competitive
as usual.
“Last year’s top 4 Unionville-Sebewaing,
Bay City All Saints, Elkton-
Pigeon-Bay Port and Reese will be
strong and Vassar and Bad Axe
should be much improved.”
PAGE EIGHT CASS CITY CHRONICLE - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2009 CASS CITY, MICHIGAN
Discounts on
fluorescent
light bulbs
available
DTE Energy is making it easier - and
more affordable - for its Detroit Edison
customers to make their homes
greener and more energy efficient
with discounts of up to 50 percent on
compact fluorescent light bulbs
(CFLs).
The specially priced bulbs are available
now through DTE Energy at several
area retailers for as little as 99
cents apiece.
“Lighting can be as much as 20 percent
of the average customer’s electric
bill. A great way to reduce that
amount is to replace the incandescent
light bulbs in your home with Energy
Star qualified compact fluorescent
lights,” said Steve Kurmas, Detroit
Edison president and chief operating
officer. “CFLs use 75 percent less energy
and last up to 10 times longer
than incandescent bulbs. That can
translate into a savings of as much as
$44 over the 10,000 hour lifetime of
just one CFL.”
The discounted CFLs are available
throughout Detroit Edison’s southeastern
Michigan service territory.
The CFL discounts are part of DTE
Energy’s Your Energy Savings initiative,
designed to help its customers
save money and help the environment
by saving energy. As part of this effort,
the company is introducing a
number of other new energy efficiency
programs this month including:
• Home Energy Audits
DTE Energy’s MichCon natural gas
customers can choose from 3 different
onsite energy audits, starting as low
as $25, to assess the energy efficiency
of their homes and recommend steps
for improvement. Customers who
complete an audit can qualify for rebates
of up to $1,500 for making
those improvements. In addition,
DTE Energy has a Web site tool,
called MyEnergy Analyzer, which allows
all customers to evaluate their
homes online. Those who complete
an online audit will receive a free energy
efficiency kit valued at $25.
MyEnergy Analyzer and additional
information on home audits is available
at YourEnergySavings.com.
• Energy Efficiency Assistance
DTE Energy is helping qualified lowincome
customers make energy efficiency
improvements to their homes
at no cost. The program includes: replacement
of inefficient refrigerators,
furnaces and water heaters with high
efficiency models; installation of programmable
thermostats and insulation;
energy conservation and
weatherization education and more.
Qualified low-income customers can
enroll in this program through their
local Community Action Agency. A
list of these organizations is available
at YourEnergySavings.com, or by
contacting the Michigan Community
Action Agency Association at (517)
321-7500.
• Multifamily Dwelling Program
DTE Energy is offering property
managers and owners of multifamily
buildings with more than five units an
array of incentives to make energy efficiency
upgrades at a fraction of the
cost. Details are available at YourEnergySavings.com.
Since June, DTE Energy has been
offering its Detroit Edison customers
$50 for their old, energy guzzling refrigerators
and freezers and hauling
them away for recycling for free.
Pick-ups can be scheduled online at
YourEnergySavings.com or by calling
(866) 796-0512.
In addition, DTE Energy will start
offering rebates and special pricing in
September to customers who purchase
Energy Star qualified programmable
thermostats, clothes washers,
and low flow showerheads.
Energy Star is a joint program of the
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and the U.S. Department of
Energy to help consumers save
money and protect the environment
through the use of energy efficient
products and practices.
CASS CITY, MICHIGAN CASS CITY CHRONICLE - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2009 PAGE NINE
Silvia Lapp
Silvia C. Lapp, 49, of Windermere,
Fla., passed away Friday, Nov. 13,
2009.
She was born in Bogota, Columbia,
the daughter of Enrique and Silvia
Tamayo. They moved to New York
and finally settled in Florida.
Silvia worked for the Walt Disney
World Swan and Dolphin Resort as an
administrative assistant for 20 years.
She had a variety of interests, but caring
for her family was most important.
Silvia had an artistic flair, with a
love for gardening and a passion for
cooking.
Silvia is survived by her husband,
Tracy Lapp; a son, Jordan Lapp of
Windermere, Fla.; her father, Enrique
Tamayo of Sarasota, Fla.; her motherin-law,
June Lapp of Cass City; a
brother, Enrique Tamayo, Jr. of
Brookline, Mass. and a sister, Gladys
Pozdgai of Medway, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her
Kathleen Smith
Kathleen J. “Joie” (Blamer) Smith,
67, of Fairview, passed away Sunday,
Nov. 22, 2009, at Medilodge Nursing
Center in Hillman.
She was born Sept. 28, 1942 in Standish,
the daughter of Clara (Musselman)
and John Blamer.
She married Henry “Hank” Smith
Oct. 6, 1962 at the Mio Methodist
Church.
Together, Kathleen and Hank had 3
children: Bob, born July 22, 1963;
Henry, born Jan. 10, 1965; and
Melanie, born Dec. 21, 1970. Joie
worked in factories downstate in
Lapeer from 1962 to 1968. On Easter
weekend, 1968, she had a factory accident,
which resulted in her left arm
being amputated. She and Henry
moved back home with their 2 boys
and bought the farm where the family
lives today. They had their daughter,
Melanie, soon after. Joie and Henry
had 2 foster children, David and
Kenny Orchard, in their care for about
10 months. They were then adopted.
A while later, they took in Hank’s
brother’s kids: Ed, Jim, and Samantha
Smith; after their father’s death. The
kids lived with Joie and Hank for
about 2 years; they got along well, as
the kids were all about the same age.
When the kids’ mother remarried, she
took them back home with her.
Joie was active in the 4-H Horse
Club. She rode horses a lot; she even
went on the Bicentennial Wagon
Train trip with the 4-H group for
about 2 weeks. She also worked as a
cook in many restaurants. She cooked
at the AuSable Valley Nursing Home
in Fairview for a couple of years, and
also at the Comins Nutrition Center.
She joined the Comins Mennonite
Church. She always tried to learn new
hobbies: she worked at ceramics and
loved it. She also made an afghan for
each one of her 12 grandchildren. She
included a card about them and
grandma in each; telling them how
much she loved them.
Joie is survived by her husband,
Hank; her children: Bob (Dawn)
Smith; Henry (Andrea) Smith; and
Melanie Smith; 12 grandchildren; and
POULTRY PLANT
Turning to other matters, Cristiano
informed the council and a handful of
residents in attendance that Liang’s
Farm & Processing, LLC, which
broke ground in early Oct in the Cass
City Industrial Park for an 8,000square-foot
poultry processing center,
has decided to move its operation to
neighboring Caro.
“When Steve Liang (company
owner) learned his costs would exceed
his budget, he proceeded to find
a building already built. We wish him
luck in his venture,” Cristiano said.
The facility was expected to handle
approximately 100,000 birds annually
including chickens, ducks, geese and
squab for specialty markets, with the
hiring of 8-10 employees initially.
Liang’s plans also included a second
phase to produce tofu-like products
that could have lead to the construction
of 3 new buildings and the creation
of as many as 50 new jobs.
“The village received a $10,000
down payment when he (Liang) entered
into a land contract with the village
and we will be able to keep that
money,” Cristiano noted.
NAPA BUILDING
A land contract in the amount of
$80,000, with monthly payments of
$700, was approved with Tony Jacobs
for the property at 6544 Main Street,
commonly known as the NAPA building.
Terms of the contract call for payments
of $2,000 in 2009 and $3,000
in 2010. The 10-year contract will included
an interest rate of 7 1/2 percent
and calls for $18,000 in building improvements.
The building upgrades will be supervised
by Sam Moore, Parks and
Recreation director, and will include
a combination of local contractors,
part-time employees and volunteers.
One of the biggest disbursements
will be for the cost of a new heating
system that was awarded to Howard’s
Heating, the lowest of 2 bids received,
in the amount of $6,191.
APPOINTMENTS
Three members of Cass City’s business
community were approved to
serve on the Downtown Development
Authority (DDA) and Economic Development
Corporation (EDC)
boards.
Susan Walsh, salesperson at Curtis
Chrysler, will replace Eric Yeager on
the DDA and EDC boards, while
Dwight Thabet, proprietor of Thabet
Funeral Home, and Nancy Braun,
owner of Plain and Fancy Decorating,
were named the newest members of
the planning commission.
In other business during the 30minute
gathering, the council:
Agreed to receive sealed bids for the
sale of a 1992 Dodge Ram 150 pickup
truck until Jan. 14.
Learned Russ Beifer was elected
chairmen of the planning commission
for a 3-year term.
Received, approved and filed the
minutes from the planning commission’s
Sept. 16 meeting, and the Economic
Development Corporation and
Downtown Development Authority
meetings on Oct. 13.
Approved payments of bills totaling
$424,982 and accepted the financial
statements ending Oct. 31 with a cash
balance of $1,612,201.
Rescheduled the next regular meeting
of the village council for Dec. 14
due to the Christmas holiday.
tween the union and the school was in
full force, D.M. Burr engaged in discussions
with the district to provide
custodial services.
The company submitted a proposal
that was subsequently approved by
the school board, according to the
suit, which notes the district did not
obtain bids from any other company.
The 2-count suit alleges D.M. Burr
committed “tortuous interference
with a contractual relationship” and
“tortuous interference with a business
relationship or expectancy”.
“D.M. Burr intentionally and improperly
interfered with plaintiff association’s
CBA rights for its
custodian members by instigating
their proposal to provide the very
same custodial services” to the Cass
City Public Schools, resulting in
breach, disruption and/or termination
of the CBA rights for the custodians.
The union, which has requested a
jury trial, is seeking compensatory
damages in excess of $25,000.
Correction
A story in last week’s Chronicle regarding
a pair of domestic violence
incidents in Cass City incorrectly
stated that the suspect suffered 2
small puncture wounds to the abdomen.
was injured.
SENIOR ASHLEIGH Stoeckle, a member of the Cass City High School Equestrian
Team for the past 4 years, competes in the saddle seat event during a meet
this season.
Cass City Equestrian Team enjoys best
season ever; Class C Reserve Champs
by Tom Montgomery
Editor
Horses probably don’t come to mind
when area residents think about high
school sports, but Cass City can now
add Class C Reserve Equestrian Team
Champion in District 14 to the
school’s list of athletic titles.
“The equestrian team for Cass City
was formed in 2002 as a club sport,
and in 2004 it became recognized as
a varsity sport,” said team Coach
Laura Cotton. “The team is supported
by the school, and the team members
receive their varsity letter upon completion
of the season. My time as the
coach is voluntary.
“Cass City was a C team this year
with 5 riders - the largest team todate,”
Cotton noted, adding in previous
years the team completed in Class
D, with only one or 2 members.
The team competes in a host of different
events, including western
showmanship, English showmanship,
saddle seat showmanship, saddle seat
equitation, saddle seat pattern, hunt
seat equitation, western horsemanship,
western bareback, trail, barrels,
timed events and 2-person relays.
“The equestrian sport is overseen by
the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship
Association for rules and
regulations,” Cotton explained.
“There are 19 schools - 68 riders this
year - that competed in District 14 and
(they’re) divided into A, B, C and D
teams depending on how many kids
are on the team.
Schools that compete in District 14
include Kingston, Ubly, Croswell-
Lexington, Sandusky, Caro, Reese,
Bad Axe, Millington, Peck, Brown
City, Marlette and Akron-Fairgrove.
“Teams compete in 3 meets held
over the weekends in September.
Meets for this year were held in Caro
at the Tuscola County Fairgrounds
and Sandusky at the Sanilac County
Fairgrounds,” she said. “The champion
teams of the district go on to
compete at a regional meet and the
winning teams from regionals advance
on to state competition.”
Cotton said each team is awarded
points based on how well the team
members are placed in each event
they compete in. Points are given for
first through eighth place.
Excell expands in Caro
Management officials with the Excell
Group, based in Lathrup Village,
recently announced that the company’s
newest expanded call center
operation will be locating in Caro.
The announcement was made by L.
William Brann III, President and
CEO of the company.
“The Excell Group management
team did an extensive search throughout
Michigan for a location, and decided
on expanding the current Caro
office in Tuscola County because of
the talented and trained workforce in
the area,” Brann said. He also credited
a pro-business attitude that was
displayed by local agencies like
Thumb Works, building owners, other
local businesses and area residents.
Brann lauded the city of Caro, Caro
City Manager Don Beavers, the Tuscola
County Economic Development
Corporation and EDC Director Jim
McLoskey for helping the firm identify
the best suited office space for its
needs, and for allowing the expanded
business location to hit the ground
running.
“The Excell Group staff members
had many options to review in this
site selection process over a relatively
short period of time, and are extremely
pleased that we chose to expand
our current operations in Caro
by opening a new office,” Brann said.
Reaction to the announcement from
Brann has been very positive.
“The city welcomes the Michiganbased
Excell Group and its expansion
in Caro. It is very good news to see
Excell Group retaining existing jobs,
and creating new jobs for our town
during these tough economic times. It
is exciting to see these jobs that are
staying in and coming to our community,”
said Tom Striffler, Mayor of
Caro.
Initially, the operation in Caro will
employ approximately 50 full-time
people, but according to Brann, the
office has the potential to grow based
on the success of the operation.
Adding his well wishes to the new
firm was Tuscola County EDC Director
Jim McLoskey. “The EDC was
very happy to partner with the city of
Caro in bringing the Excell Group
and these new employment opportunities
to Caro and Tuscola County.
These are exactly the type of jobs that
are needed to help diversify our economy,
and will help us become less dependent
on the automotive and auto
supplier industry,” he said.
The Excell Group is a diversified
temporary and permanent employee
human resource and staffing agency
with offices throughout the Midwest,
serving hundreds of employers. The
business was founded by Brann in
1994 in Michigan. The company has
been recognized as one of the leading
human resource providers in the region
by many different business
groups over the past several years.
Brann said the Excell Group will be
taking applications for customer service
representatives and team leaders
for the new expanded office in Caro.
Job seekers are asked to e-mail their
resume and a cover letter to Human
Resources hr@excellgroupinc.com or
by fax to (248) 416-1102 for a possible
interview. Job interviews will be
handled on an appointment-only
basis.
The expanded office and business in
Caro is scheduled to be fully operational
by mid-December, with remodeling
of its building scheduled to
begin immediately.
According to business records on
file, the Excell Group office was the
first call center of its kind to locate in
Tuscola County. The firm also has an
office in Cass City which opened earlier
this year and employs 37 people
at that location.
