NRCS offers a variety of financial incentives including cost sharing to producers and landowners interested in environmental stewardship.
NRCS Agricultural Management Assistance Program (AMA) Description: AMA is a voluntary program for agricultural producers that provides incentives to address natural resources concerns such as water conservation, water quality, soil erosion, and transition and diversification issues. NRCS conservationalists work with producers to develop a conservation plan, design conservation practices, and provide guidance to help implement the plan. AMA provides an opportunity for producers who do not normally participate in government programs to apply for assistance, and for others to supplement what the federal farm programs can offer. This USDA program is targeted toward limited resource farmers, and in New Jersey AMA is available only to agricultural producers who qualify for farmland assessment. NRCS Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Description: CRP is a voluntary program for agricultural landowners. Through CRP, you can receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term, resource conserving covers on eligible farmland. Participants enroll in CRP contracts for 10 – 15 years. The program is administered by the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) through the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and supported by the NRCS, Cooperative State Research and Education Service, state forestry agencies, and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts. NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Description: EQIP provides cost sharing to help farmers with conservation practices. All sign-ups are conducted at USDA Service Centers in New Jersey. Farmers can apply for cost-sharing for many types of conservation practices. EQIP is a voluntary conservation program from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. It supports production agriculture and environmental quality as compatible goals. Through EQUIP, farmers may receive financial and technical help with structural and management conservation practices on agricultural land. NRCS Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) Description: WHIP provides free technical assistance and reimbursement of up to 75% of the project costs for approved applications. Eligible projects will focus on one of six wildlife habitat improvement practices targeted for WHIP funding in New Jersey. NRCS Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) Description: WRP is a voluntary program that offers landowners a chance to receive payments for restoring and protecting wetlands on their property. The wetlands program provides the following environmental benefits: 1) Enhanced wildlife habitat for migratory birds, 2) Improved water quality, 3) Improved flood water retention and ground water recharge, 4) Increased open space, 5) Opportunities for environmental education. 5
