[<strong>TRAINING</strong> <strong>LUTHERAN</strong> <strong>PASTORS</strong> IN AFRICA USING THE BOOK OF CONCORD]<br />

and bishops have been tend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Lord‟s flock and tak<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> his<br />

v<strong>in</strong>eyard, garden and plantation over <strong>the</strong> past decades and even<br />

centuries – not only, but also specifically <strong>in</strong> Tanzania. Praise <strong>the</strong> triune<br />

God for this!<br />

Lu<strong>the</strong>rans <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> face many similar contextual challenges and<br />

opportunities as <strong>in</strong>dividuals, as congregations and churches, even as<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>aries. Serious network<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> our <strong>in</strong>stitutions is <strong>the</strong> obvious way to<br />

go – especially <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> prospective and practis<strong>in</strong>g pastors. I believe<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church <strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Africa</strong> [LCSA] gives us a practical<br />

solution. The LCSA was constituted not as a national entity, but ra<strong>the</strong>r a<br />

confessional one – <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g Lu<strong>the</strong>rans from Botswana, Swaziland<br />

and South <strong>Africa</strong>, but <strong>in</strong>itially also from Germany and subsequentially<br />

from <strong>the</strong> USA. This Church is not constituted by national boundaries,<br />

racial bias, cultural exclusivity or ideological barriers. Ra<strong>the</strong>r its<br />

constitution gives exclusive priority to confessional ecclesiology as<br />

propagated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BoC – specifically CA VII. That practical orthodoxy [de<br />

facto et lege] is sufficient for Church unity [satis est!] provid<strong>in</strong>g space for a<br />

wide spectrum <strong>of</strong> various traditions, usages and customs [cf. Schöne<br />

2007: 45]. I believe that this foundation provides a suitable platform for a<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program <strong>of</strong> our students.<br />

This po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>the</strong> way forward for confessional Lu<strong>the</strong>rans all over <strong>the</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ent. They are called out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrow conf<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> sectarian<br />

parochialism and <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wide open spaces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> fellow<br />

believers. Obviously viable formats <strong>of</strong> such cooperat<strong>in</strong>g identities like<br />

congregations, dioceses and churches have proved favourable and<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able. My contention is that we are responsible for areas <strong>of</strong><br />

common concern and are bound by our common faith to cooperate <strong>in</strong><br />

resolv<strong>in</strong>g vex<strong>in</strong>g problems and also to strive to comb<strong>in</strong>e limited resources<br />
