IV. DELEGATIONS/PETITIONS/COMMUNICATIONS
V. ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS
A. District
1. Annual Activities Report
HS Activities Director presented the annual activities report. The new
format was discussed.
Girls’ bowling has been recently sanctioned at the state level. Indianola will
need to decide whether to sanction the sport locally. The annual estimated
expense to add bowling would be $5,000. Girls’ bowling is a winter sport.
A concern was noted that students are under the impression they must
participate in the summer bigger-faster-stronger program (BFS) in order to
be considered for team sport participation. Coaches do encourage studentathletics
to participate in BFS. Attendance expectations are clearly
communicated prior to registration. The physical education teacher work
with students individually based on conflicts. The BFS class is designed to
promote student strength and agility.
B. Human Resources/Student Services/Technology
C. School Improvement
1. 2006-07 Annual Progress Report Goals
The proposed 2006-07 Annual Progress Report (APR) goals were
presented. These goals will be included in the 2005-06 Annual Program
Report (APR). This report will be filed with the state by September 15,
2006.
Ken Bresnan moved to approve the 2006-07 Annual Program Report
goals. Cyd Dyer seconded the motion. The motion carried 7-0.
2. Student Achievement Data
A summary report of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) was included
that shows the district’s progress towards compliance with No Child
Left Behind (NCLB). The district met 29/30 goals. The 8 th grade did
not meet a goal due to the special education subgroup score. The
complete report is available by request.
Trajectories were provided showing the district progress towards
meeting the NCLB goals. The trajectories chart student proficiency
scores in math and reading.
The graduation rate was discussed. Additional information on the
number of dropouts was requested.
3. Curriculum Committee Report
The minutes of the August 30, 2006, Board curriculum committee
meeting were provided.
1. Next Board Agenda
The tentative agenda for the September 25, 2006, Board meeting was
reviewed.
2. Board Calendar
The Board calendar was reviewed.
Preliminary enrollment is up from the 2005-06 school year. The possibility of closing open
enrollment to some grade levels may need to be considered until another elementary school
is constructed.
Rob Miller encouraged the school board to review written district personnel practices to
make sure that backgrounds of employees recommended for hire are thoroughly checked
prior to hire. The related board policies will be added to a future board agenda for review.
Several opportunities for Board development through IASB are scheduled. Board
members should let the central office know if they would like to be registered.
School board elections are September 12, 2006.
A date of October 18, 2006, for a Board retreat was tentatively set at 6pm.
School election information was shared. The brochure was developed by the Grow for It
committee. The August/September Messenger will focus entirely on the election. Yard
signs will be distributed through the committee. Board members requested signs for their
yards.
