This year marks Aiken’s 175 th birthday,
and the town has been celebrating in
grand style. One of the first Celebrate Aiken
events was held in
late January, and it
was the dedication of
the Banksia Watering
Trough in memory of
our great racehorse
Summer Squall, who
died on September
22. Dogwood’s Jack
Sadler spoke about
Summer Squall’s
career, and then the
water trough was
blessed by Rev.
Grant Wiseman. A
crowd of more than
200 was on hand for
the dedication – and
the breakfast that followed
– in the Aiken
County Historical Museum.
There is an apt description of Summer
Squall inscribed on the trough’s brass plaque:
“He could run a hole in the wind.”
Another Celebrate Aiken event was
a guest speaker for
horses included Blue
Kelso, Lamb Chop,
Gamely, Shuvee,
Candy Éclair,
Pleasant Colony,
Swale and Storm
Song. Keeneland’s
Broadcast Services
Department had
put together a DVD
from old race footage
– and there was
nothing like reliving
Kelso’s win in the Washington D.C.
International, Swale’s Kentucky Derby victory
or Storm Song’s Breeders’ Cup (just
some of the races that were highlighted)!
of wearing period clothing.
The results came in by droves – by email, fax, mail – even FedEx!
– and we are glad to announce that Cathy DePrizio from Augusta,
Georgia, is the winner of our Name That Jockey contest featured in
the January newsletter. The intrepid DePrizio, a frequent visitor to
Keeneland, knows her jockeys. She now has a Dogwood chair to
prove it! All 15 jockeys are now named. Thanks to the more than
50 contestants who played.
Kentucky for 100
years, was on hand
to share her memories
of Swale, and
Cot Campbell spoke
of his love affair with
Kelso – and of Storm
The Story of
“Three-Testicle Jack”
Our Jack in the Pulpit was gelded
last July – or so we thought! We chose
to geld him because of his obstreperous
behavior, but then – oddly enough
– castration didn’t seem to make much
difference! So studdish was he that earlier
this spring we tested him to check
the levels of testosterone – which were
off the charts. Could the vets have
missed a testicle? Seems simple to
count to two! Yes indeed, upon another
surgical procedure there was a testicle
discovered high in the inguinal canal.
Seems as though the vet who did the
original castration removed one testicle
and a large mass of tissue, which
he mistakenly thought was the second
testicle. Jack is now truly gelded.
called Horse & Hound, and what better place
for their photo shoot than at Dogwood Stable
and the Aiken Training Track. Emmie and
several models came out to the barn earlier
this year (on the coldest day!) for the shoot
– and it was interesting
indeed to
see the outfits put
together. Even our
Dogwood jockey
got into the act!
