Ephraim Martin Greetings
EPHRAIM M. MARTIN
PRESIDENT
It seems as if it was just yesterday that I arrived in this
great city of love, music and people of many-cultures! But
no, it has been 30 years, and I am still here! Tonight we
celebrate our milestone, the 30th anniversary of the Chicago
Music Awards, an event with which I am well pleased.
On behalf of my wife, Justice Shelvin Louise Hall, our
daughter Dana Martin, the sponsors, advertisers,
staff and volunteers of Martin’s International, it is with
great pleasure and pride, I welcome you to this celebration
honoring the best of Chicago’s entertainers.
This evening, we are saluting those who have been nominated
by our panel of music industry experts; especially,
those nominees who have been judged winners by the
public at large. Additionally, special Lifetime Achievement
and Awards of Honor will be given to those who have
made extra-ordinary contributions to the music industry.
In May 1982 when we started what was then known as
the Chicago Reggae Music Awards (CRMA), there were
no forms of recognition for the thousands of outstanding
entertainers in the local music industry. Before long,
we listened to the cries of the entertainers in the various
music genres, calling for inclusion in the music Awards.
Soon, the CRMA evolved into the Chicago Music Awards
(CMA), so that all music genres in the Chicagoland area
could be recognized. I am pleased to say there is hardly
a category of music in Chicago that is not included in the
annual Chicago Music Awards. To learn more about the
categories for awards visit www.chicagomusicawards.org
Lest we forget, Chicago was once the “Mecca”
for the music industry. Some of the nation’s
most outstanding talents came out of this city.
Today, Chicago is home to more than 50,000
entertainers, with live entertainment to supply
all musical appetites for fans age 1 to 100.
Now after thirty years of dedicated service to
the Chicago Music industry, the time has come
for some of our younger or even older people to
pick up the baton and take the CMA to the next
level. To do so please contact Martin’s International
or e-mail: chicagomusicawards@gmail.com .
Tonight’s event is dedicated to “Health Awareness”, to
bring to light the health care challenges being faced by
many members of the Chicago entertainment industry.
Allow me to give special thanks to the participating
sponsors, advertisers, donors, media and fans for helping
to make the Chicago Music Awards successful.
Finally, and most importantly I would like to give special
thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers for working
to make this evening’s event possible. Many are
featured in this magazine. All have our undying thanks.
Our motto is: “Unity is Strength, Forward Together
Music Shall Conquer.” We ask that you fully
enjoy this star-studded evening of appreciation.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEES
Leanne Faine-Gospel Legend
Music is not foreign to Leanne Faine because
she was born with an intrinsic melodic
distinctive. She celebrates a compelling
music heritage. Her local talents
can be traced back to the churches of Inkster,
Michigan where the sanctuaries were
filled with the flavor of traditional songs
of the late, Reverend James Cleveland
and Evangelist Shirley Caesar. These
two legendary gospel greats were strong
influences in her life and career choices.
When she was 15, she sang with the Southwestern Michigan State
Choir as a lead singer under the direction of the late Mattie Moss
Clark. Leanne also sang background vocals with legendary gospel
greats, Reverend James Cleveland and Evangelist Shirley Caesar.
Just a glance at Leanne’s discography is simply remarkable. In
2001, her project entitled “Leanne” crowns her as one of the leading
soloists in the Gospel Music Industry. However, she did not
stop at that project; she did it again with the powerful live CD and
DVD in “The Conqueror!” “The Conqueror” remained on the Billboard
charts for an awesome 35 weeks. This resulted in her nomination
for a Stellar Award and extensive travel across the United
States performing for mega churches, conferences and workshops.
To whom much is given much is required. Leanne coordinated
and sang background on Vickie Winans’ 2006, “Woman 2
Woman” live CD & DVD recording. She recently completed a
mini tour with Evelyn Turrentine-Agee. She also recorded a
live CD and DVD with current Pastor Bishop Larry D. Trotter.
This magnificent spirit of excellence is certainly demonstrated
on her latest CD project “Serve The Lord.” The woman is just
full of energy and blessed with a gift which keeps on giving.
Bill FitzGerald-FitzGerald’s Nightclub
Three decades have passed since Bill
Fitzgerald and his family opened FitzGerald’s,
in Berwyn. FitzGerald’s was built
in the 1920s and has always been a gathering
spot, from the early days as a hunting
club and watering hole through its
teen years as a jazz club during the ‘50s
and ‘60s, featuring acts like Bob Scobey,
Turk Murphy, Lil Armstrong, and the
Original Salty Dogs. The FitzGerald family
bought and renovated the building in 1980, and since then its
CMA Lifetime Achievers
CMA Lifetime Achievement Award and
Producer’s Award Recipients
reputation for great music in a casual, unpretentious atmosphere
has grown steadily. Chicago Magazine calls it “a musical gem.”
Pivotal scenes from “The Express”, “A League of Their Own,”
“The Color of Money,” “Blink,” and “Adventures in Babysitting”
have all been filmed at FitzGerald’s. The scenes of Rosie
O’Donnell and Madonna dancing in “A League of Their Own,”
Paul Newman and Tom Cruise shooting pool in “The Color of
Money” and Elizabeth Shue singing the blues in “Adventure in
Babysitting”, Bon Jovi’s music video “Lost Highway” have put
the Berwyn roadhouse on the map as a Chicago movie location.
When Fitzgerald and his dad took over the Hunt Club in the early
’80s, they crowned their first year with the “American Music
Festival” over the July Fourth weekend. Earlier that same year,
Fitzgerald had made his first visit to the Jazz & Heritage Festival
in New Orleans, a trip that left an indelible impression on
the musical direction of his own festival. The festival has been
an annual event for three decades. Over the last 30 years, Bill
Fitzgerald has created a Chicago landmark with FitzGerald’s and
left and undeniable musical thumbprint on the city’s music scene.
PRODUCER’S AWARD
Lenin “Doc” Pellegrino-Kingston Mines
Chicago native Lenin “Doc” Pellegrino
was raised on the city’s West side. After
joining the US Army he served in Italy and
was wounded twice. His many commendations,
include two purple hearts and the
Combat Infantry Badge. After the war he
graduated from the University of Illinois
and went on to medical school. During
his long medical career, he became Chief
of Staff at Walther Memorial Hospital. In
his later years, he concentrated his practice
to the West Side, caring mainly for elderly
and low income patients, retiring from active practice in 1994.
During the ‘60’s, Doc also worked for many civil rights causes, including
marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, Alabama
and Cicero, Illinois. It was then when he also discovered his love
of the entertainment business, first working with Alice’s Restaurant
and later opening a coffee house with a neighboring theater. The
Kingston Mines Theatre was housed in an old horse barn on Lincoln
Avenue, sharing space with the Kingston Mines Café. The theater
achieved modest success with their most famous production as the
original incarnation of “Grease.” The café, separate from the theater,
hosted several different types of entertainment(Jazz, Folk, poetry,
movies and games), on the weekends it featured live Blues music.
Unfortunately, the rented building was old and in disrepair,
with the roof caving in one snowy night, forcing them to move
to a safer location. After a short time on Clark Street, Kingston
Mines finally opened in what is its present location on Halsted
Street. It started out as two small store fronts but over the years
has expanded and modernized. Kingston Mines has always been
an interracial Blues club, featuring two live Blues bands every
night of the year. It still boasts of Doc’s Motto; “Illegitimum Non
Carborundum” or, “Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down.”

CMA Award of Honor
Janet Hubert, perhaps best known for her work as the original feisty Vivian Banks on the 90’s hit, “Fresh Prince of
Bel Air,” is on a mission. She was the original mom and is now a real life mother on a mission. She has appeared
on “The Jamie Foxx Show,” “Bernie Mac,” “Gilmore Girls,” and “Friends.” In addition, she set the Adelphi winning
show, “Crowns” written by Regina Taylor. She danced, sang, and acted in the George Faison version of “For Colored
Girls,” and has a website dedicated to bring quality children’s stories for all children, but especially ethnic children.
She has worked for many years with various health organizations, including The National Osteoporosis Foundation,
National Minority Health, and Bio. She enlisted other celeb friends including Bernie Mac, Richard Roundtree, and Pattie
Labelle to speak on their personal stories. She is a tireless advocate for children, traveling to churches, community centers
and schools reading stories, in an attempt to help change the mindset of children today. Hubert released a children’s book
and DVD series called “JG and the BC Kids.” She also introduced a line of backpacks, lunch totes in Wal-Mart stores
last fall. Ultimately, Hubert’s goal is to bring street-smart- kids and book-smart kids together and create life-smart kids.
2010 marks an important milestone for Hubert. It has been 20 years since she left “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, her son
will graduate from high school and she will finally publish a book detailing her departure from the hit NBC series – the
real story. Thus, she has penned her own memoir entitled “Perfection is Not a Sitcom Mom” which is available for
download on audible.com along with her children’s story, “A Sneaker Feature”. Janet’s website is www.janethubert.com.
In the late 1970s, Joe Shanahan left his hometown of Chicago for New York City. A year later,
he returned to Chicago with the thought of creating a club tied to the artistic scene of the city.
After parties he was throwing outgrew his apartment, Shanahan was directed to the Northside
Auditorium Building. Originally built in 1927 as a Swedish Community Center, the venue was
home to a jazz/folk club, called Stages.
Shanahan opened Smart Bar in 1982, a dance club mixing a variety of the new genres of the
time, Groundbreaking DJs Frankie Knuckles and Joe Smooth would spin regularly while
bands like Ministry showcased their new “industrial” music. Later that year, Shanahan promoted
a show featuring R.E.M, which led to him booking the club’s weekend slots, gradually
taking over the main floor of Stages. He then moved Smart Bar from the fourth floor to the
basement of the building. The main club, now called Metro, previously called The Cabaret
Metro, re-opened as a live music venue.
Metro celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2007. Later that year, owner Joe Shanahan was
awarded a Recording Academy honors from the Chicago Chapter of The Recording Academy
in recognition of Metro’s 25 years in the Chicago music community.
Benjamin Osafo is CEO of Unitty Entertainment, an artist design and development
company that he founded in Chicago 21 years ago. Born and raised
in Accra, Ghana, Osafo moved to Chicago in 1976 to study accounting.
A chance encounter with music legend Jerry Butler, led Osafo to studying music
production under Butler’s mentorship. During his time in Chicago, Osafo has
worked with a number of studios including: Chicago Trax, Chicago Recording Company,
Universal Studios, Curtom Studios, Pentagon Recordings and PS Studios.
In 1990, he founded Unitty Entertainment with the goal of becoming one of Chicago’s premier
production companies in music, television, film, and fashion. He has produced artists
such as: the Chi-town Hustlers, the Sergeant’s Red Army Band, Nucleus Rex, Flavor
KQLFM 3.2, Ozone, Tone Capone, Bridge, Unladylike, and Anthony M. Last fall he
started the Chicago Unity Power Music Movement in order to unite Chicago’s producers,
managers, artists, and DJs. Osafo continues to pursue his vision of shaping Chicago
into the premier city for African American entertainment, otherwise known as “Chi-Ville”.

30 years and counting
By Barbara Kensey
When the curtain is raised on the 30th annual Chicago Music
Awards (CMA), Jacob Miller and Bob Marley will certainly
be smiling down on Ephraim Malachi Martin, president of
Martin’s Inter-Culture. It was the those two entertainers – both
gone now -- along with promoter Tommy Cowan, journalist
Ben Brodie and others who planted the seed in the young
Martin in the 70s to do something to promote the music of his
homeland, Jamaica. As a photojournalist, he covered the entertainment beat for The
Daily Gleaner and Star. The St. Thomas/Kingston native made his way to Chicago in
1981 where he established Martin’s International, under which he founded the International
Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) and the Chicago Reggae Music
Awards in May 1982. His mission was clear – spread the gospel of Reggae music.
“At that time there was no form of recognition for Reggae anywhere,” he says.
“In fact there was no formal recognition of any music anywhere in Chicago.” In those
early years, Martin introduced Chicagoans to the wealth of Reggae talent in the city.
Performers like Nyan Como, Gypsy Fari, Skanking Lizard, Aswad Greggori, Charles
Cameron, Armagedon, Dallol and many more – all with their own following -- graced
the stage at the annual salute to Chicago Reggae’s finest. Then in 1984, he responded to
requests from performers of other musical styles and the categories of: Jazz, Blues, Rock
among others were added to the list of nominees. Not very long after, the Chicago Reggae
Music Awards became the Chicago Music Awards (CMA), opening up the competition
to all musical genres.
This second half of the life of the music awards has honored some of the biggest names
synonymous with Chicago’s rich musical legacy: Jennifer Hudson, The Emotions, the
Chi-Lites, Rachel Barton Pine, Ramsey Lewis, Umphrey’s McGee, Jeremih, Smashing
Pumpkins, Wilco, the Dells, the late Albertina Walker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
Buddy Guy, Inez Andrews, Etta James, Lucky Cordell,
Pervis Spann, Chaka Khan, Waco Brothers, Frankie
Knuckles, Cal Starr and the Staple Singers and so many
more.
Today the Chicago Music Awards remains the
only annual event in the city that recognizes entertainers
from all musical genres. The main objective of the
CMAs remains the same, show appreciation to the city’s
outstanding entertainers who brighten our lives with their
music. The CMAs pay tribute to Chicago’s rich and
diverse musical heritage. Nearly 200 artists in over 40
categories ranging from Pop, Reggae, Blues, Jazz, Rock,
Country & Western and Gospel to R&B, Soul, Hip Hop,
Latin, World Beat and more compete at this festive event
dedicated to “health awareness.”
“Three decades and we’re still here,” says
Martin. “I couldn’t imagine that we would still be here 30
years later but we are because of our dedicated staff. I’m
fortunate to have such a committed staff that helps to keep
it alive.” Many MIC staff members have been with the
organization 10 years or more including: Barbara Kensey,
Field Marshal, Camille Jackson, Debbie Bass, Stephanie
Cummings, Teena Massimo Pillow, Tina Nance, Karl Villanueva,
Jerome Robinson and Tanya Sheree.

sound is fresh and versatile, incorporating the best elements of Hip-Hop, Soul, Dancehall
Reggae, and Reggaeton. P.R.ism hails from the Humboldt Park neighborhood. It is the Chicago
that he does. His shows are coordinated with turntable wizard, DJ Skor; the duo gets
venues amped with the energy. P.R.ism hosts for several hip-hop events in Chicago. At
Club Big-Wig, he hosted a weekly open mic competition and he helmed an emcee battle
competition at The Note Nightclub which will be released as a DVD called “Rhymespittaz.”
with: Megadeth, Black Label Society, Mayhem, Macabre, Anvil, Machine Head, Pentagram,
Novembers Doom, Raven, Skindred, and Nachtmystium. Earthen Grave boasts an undeniable
collective metal and musical pedigree. Guitarist, Jason Muxlow has worked with The Living
Malik Yusef, an accomplished Emmy, Grammy
and Peabody award-winning poet, received acclaim
within the music industry when he released
his debut album The Greatest Chicago
Fire – Cold Day in Hell back in 2003. He has
also appeared on Russell Simon’s Def Poetry
Jam. With the release of G.O.O.D. Morning,
G.O.O.D. Night, Yusef is now only inches away
from achieving his primary goal. “I just want to
sneak my way into the soul of people and [I want]
people to allow me to be a part of their lives,”
he says.” Born and raised on the south side of
Chicago, Malik Yusef (professionally known as
“The WordSmyth”) has been honing his craft for
nearly a decade, taking poetry to unimaginable
heights. His poetry has also been featured on
promotional compilations for ASCAP, Sprite,
Coca-Cola, Nike and multiple underground mix
tapes across the country. He has collaborated
with notable artists like Method Man, Common,
Carl Thomas, Kanye West, Rhymefest, among
others. Malik’s album “Good Morning/ Good
Night” released in June of 2009, exhibited the
poet’s struggle between his internal dualities.
was always putting together groups and trying
out new things he had written. Juice graduated
college in the south; he has studied with Donald
Byrd, Burgess Gardner, Bunkie Green and
Benjamin Kirk. Juice played trumpet hard from
the start. He also wrote music from his heart
and not from his ear. They called him a ‘city
boy with country boy ways’. He was a square
but truly gifted... They said Juice was a natural.
RPM is an extremely talented artist. He has had
for our inner city youth as well as showing respect
and support to our troops. Their ultimate
goal is to build a foundation and provide a support
system, here in Chicago, for Chicago’s local
artists. You can find more of RPM’s music
House Music Stage Performers
A Chicago house music pioneer and
world class “deejay,’ Gene has collaborated
with a range of artists and producers,
including Adam Beyer, Cari
Lekebusch, Carl Cox, Paul Johnson,
Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Frankie
Knuckles, and Ron Hardy. A key contributor
who helped shape house and
techno music worldwide, Gene is a
true innovator of the Chicago house
sound. Gene Hunt’s first release was
on the infamous Trax imprint, he
swiftly followed up with a string of
tracks personified by a strong influence
from Detroit. Deep strings mixed
with intricate drum pattern, is his
trademark and his “Melodies” EP for
Nepenta was one of the labels first hits.
The Chicago Native, Doza, developed a
love for music at an early stage in her life.
At age 15, Doza was discovered by the rap
group Soldierz at War (S.A.W.). During her
career with S.A.W. Doza opened up for several
major acts...Lil Wayne, Eve and Twista
to name a few. Although her span with
S.A.W. was a rewarding experience, she decided
to become a solo artist. She yearned
for the opportunity to show the world her
unique style through writing and composing
her own music. The creativity of her music
is catchy, but easy on the ear; with lyrics
that flow simply in an interesting manner.
Doza’s aim is to create music that encourages
everyone to have fun and enjoy life.
MaddJazz is a talented veteran of Chicago
dance music. Born Jorge Ortega,
he is a skilled turntablist and respected
producer. He has time spent trading
tricks with the best of Chicago’s hiphop
scene – which placed him third in
three consecutive DMC heats. MaddJazz
has an ear for more trend-making
fare, as the “Mind of a Maddman”
EP on Ghetto Division Records clearly
shows. If MaddJazz’s Mind of a Maddman
EP is just a preview of the label’s
future solo EPs, you can be sure Ghetto
Division Records will deliver some
serious fire in future releases.
As a DJ, songwriter, producer,
and entrepreneur DJ Hershey has
enjoyed a 14-year career as disc
jockey/writer and Grammy nominated
producer for local and national
recording artists. Through
his company, Marshall Arts Music
Productions, he produces some of
the hottest up and coming artists
in Chicago including: Public Announcement,
Malik Yusef and Avant
to name a few. In 2002, he produced
and scored his first movie soundtrack
for independent comedy film
“2 Getogther” written by BET Comic
B. Cole. He is currently working
on his second score and soundtrack
and recently worked with Oprah’s
“Make a Wish Foundation” to grant
a wish of an inspiring R&B artist.
In the spring of 2007, Benjamin
“Funkman” Osafo, founder and
CEO of Unitty Entertainment, was
introduced to an unknown artist
by the name of Anthony Matthews
Jr. Funkman recognized that there
was something exceptional about
this 18 year old from Bellwood,
Illinois and immediately took him
under his wings. Anthony and
Funkman entrenched themselves
in the studio, working to create a
new Chicago sound that embraced
Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop styles but
was also infused with Latin and
African rhythms. Unitty Entertainment
partnered with HollowWear
Creations to focus on Anthony’s
branding. Anthony M has become
a seasoned entertainer who has
performed in multiple radio and
television programs.

Henhouse Prowlers, the powerhouse Chicago string
band quartet, perform their brand of innovative bluegrass
for audiences all across the country. They describe
their sound as “new traditional” noting that
much of their material is original, yet it touches on
classic bluegrass themes such as love, loss, work,
regret and death. The Prowlers’ fresh, descriptive
songs have been featured in the PBS series “The Ride
of Our Lives” and they released their second CD, A
Dark Rumor in 2009. A spring 2011 release is expected.
The Prowlers have shared the stage with everyone
from jam grassers like Cornmeal, to true bluegrass
pioneers like Earl Scruggs. They tour extensively
playing clubs and festivals, listening rooms and house
concerts. Their energetic live shows appeal to young
and old alike, winning over audiences with a wide
repertoire of much-loved standards to complement
their own unique musical narratives. The Prowlers’
image is in keeping with the gritty Chicago bluegrass
circuit circa 1955: the band members wear suits and
share a single vocal microphone, weaving in and
out in constant motion on stage. The effect is high
energy, solid bluegrass that is pure entertainment.
They said it couldn’t be done, but since 1997 The Polkaholics have been mixing doses of punk rock
and polka in a high-speed blender, creating a souped-up sound that fuses the beer garden with the mosh
pit. The Polkaholics have performed in some of the most prestigious Chicago music venues including
the Metro, House of Blues, the Vic, the Chicago Symphony Center, the Chicago Cultural Center,
and of course the Baby Doll Polka Club. And they have even been featured internationally on the incredible
“American Polka” CD released on the Trikont label out of Munich Germany. With founder
Dandy Don Hedeker on guitar and vocals, Jolly James Wallace on bass and vocals, and Stylin’ Steve
Glover on drums and vocals, The Polkaholics use a power rock trio format to put the umph into the
oompah-POW, blasting polka screaming into the 21st century. “The Polkaholics” (a polka rock band
from Chicago) should not to be confused with “Polkaholics”(a great Toronto band circa 1982-1985)
Shekinah Glory Ministry’s gold-selling 2004 release “Live” changed praise and worship music in
urban America, at the heart of this revolution is its minister of music and fine arts, Phil Tarver. This
6’7” giant of a talent has now stepped center stage with his own brand of praise and worship music
on his third solo release “Place of Worship.” Although, Tarver’s known for leading Shekinah Glory
Ministry on “Stomp” and “Arise/Shine”; his new radio smash, “God Is Able” is creating a new
identity for him as a soloist. After Tarver’s work on Shekinah Glory Ministry, Kingdom Records
asked Tarver to record a solo project. In 2005, Tarver went to Brazil to mentor praise and worship
teams at various churches. Those singers and musicians ended up backing him on the live release
“Be Pleased” that was recorded there. This mentoring concept has become a regular part of Tarver’s
ministry and continued with Tarver’s CD, “Draw Nearer,” which along with the single “Betta than
That” rose to the top of the Billboard Gospel charts. The sing-a-long worship anthem “God Is Able”
is already a smash and his new CD “Place of Worship” promises to be his biggest hit of his career.
