“The Power of a Good Story”
Everyone loves a good story. Perhaps that is one of the
reasons the Bible is so easy and enjoyable to read. When
you think about it, our greatest tool in sharing our faith
and in encouraging each other is to tell the story of
God’s goodness and His work in our lives.
For me, this is one of the true joys coming out of my
opportunity to work at Steinbach Bible College. I love to
hear the stories of our students. But even more than that,
I thoroughly enjoy being part of their stories. It is such a
tremendous privilege to invest spiritually into the lives of
our students.
As you read this, you might find yourself becoming a
little envious. Perhaps you wish you had the opportunity
to teach at SBC and influence these lives. The good news
is that you do have the opportunity every day to
encourage others and invest in the spiritual lives of the
people around you. I believe that God has placed you
where you are for this moment in history. I believe there
are people around you right now that need to hear your
story. While our settings are different, we all can be part
of someone’s story. I hope you are encouraged by this
edition of the InTouch as you read the stories of our
students, staff and alumni.
Blessings,
President’s Message

Your story can be a powerful thing…
An interview with current student, Nate Siemens.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I grew up on a farm in La Crete, Alberta, attending La
Crete Christian Fellowship. I come from a family of four
boys.
What brought you to SBC?
I’ve actually come to SBC two different times. The first
time, I came after working a year right out of high school.
Coming to SBC was always at the back of my mind, since
I had a brother who had attended here, and through
attending the Impact youth weekend, I realized I liked
SBC’s community. Since I am not much of a scholar, my
purpose for coming was to deepen my faith. I attended
for two years, after which I was done with school. I didn’t
like the studying and I was not that good at it. I went
home, and became part owner of a roofing business,
working at this for five years.
I enjoyed the business, but found I was unsatisfied and
unfulfilled with work and life. During this time I spent a
week serving in northern Alberta on a mission trip, and
felt that God was showing me He wanted me in ministry.
I had an opportunity to work in full time ministry, but I
realized I was not ready. I knew then that I needed to get
more training and felt led back to SBC for a BA in Youth
Ministry.
What are some highlights of your time at SBC?
Being challenged safely - it has been good to have a safe

context for learning to lead through MissionX and the
Experiential Leadership Course. I have grown the most
when challenged to step out of what I know, in a step by
step process. Having different chances to tell my story I
learned that each person’s “story” matters a lot and
telling it can be a very powerful thing.
How can we pray for you and other students like
you?
Pray for our finances. It is a big deal and tough to earn
enough for 12 months in only four months, especially for
the married students. Also, pray for guidance and
direction for our futures. I know what I came to SBC for,
but I don’t know where I am going after this.

Tribute

Anne Reimer
July 19, 1972 – September 9, 2012
Anne ne Reimer, SBC graduate of 2004, passed away
September be 9, 2012, after ft a courageous ba battle le with ith cancer.
Anne is survived by her parents Lawrence and Agnes, her
brother James, and her sisters Sara, Jeannie, and Arlene.
Anne is remembered at SBC for her passionate dream of
someday becoming a pilot. Her faith that all things are
possible with God helped her achieve her goal of
graduating with SBC’s BA in Aviation, combining training
at Harv’s Air in Steinbach with her studies at SBC. After
graduation she worked for Harv’s Air and then in Fort
Vermillion, AB, as a Medivac pilot.
Anne was also known for her ability to connect easily with
other cultures. She enjoyed serving God on numerous
short term mission trips in Manitoba, Ontario, Cuba, and
Swaziland.
Jessy Neufeld, classmate of Anne and current Dean of
Women, remembers how Anne was
an encouragement to fellow students
as she entered whole-heartedly into
school life at SBC. Anne’s example of
living out her faith in joy and
expectancy, no matter the
circumstances, continues to inspire
us. She will be missed.

Alumni Update: Trevor Arsenault
“Never Forget orget Your Professors!”
These words of advice are from
SBC’s newest board member, Trevor
Arsenault (Diploma of Biblical
Studies, 2004). Trevor explains that
he has found former professors to be
an invaluable resource and great
encouragement over the years.
The example of his father, an RCMP
officer for 31 years, and an early call
in his life to “help people” directed
Trevor to pursuing education in
social work. After obtaining a firm
foundation in the Bible at SBC,
Trevor went on to complete a degree
in Social Work at Booth College.
Trevor and his wife, Jody, have been
married for 11 years and have two
daughters aged 4 and 7. They call
Steinbach home, and Trevor works
in front line child protection work
with Southeastern Manitoba Child
and Family Services. Trevor and
Jody attend Steinbach Evangelical
Fellowship, where Trevor serves on
the board of elders.
When asked why, with an already
busy schedule, he would consider
serving on the SBC board, Trevor
quickly answered, “I believe in what
SBC does in training servant leaders
and I am honoured to be a part of
the “leg work” that goes into that.
SBC is a great school. I left in 2006,
but didn’t want to go. This is a good
way to come back.”
Any further words of advice for
students? “Never throw away your
notes!”

Make
Special occasions call for looking
special. Whether it is celebrating a
baptism, participating in a ribbon
cutting, or starting a new job, all
usually call for a new look. So with
some new things happening on the
SBC campus, we decided it was time
for a new look in our promotions as
well.
Starting it all off was the conclusion
of a year celebrating 75 years as an
institution training leaders for our
churches. Throughout the year,
planned events helped us remember
God’s faithfulness over the history of
the college.
In the meantime, we were working
hard at launching a big bold
initiative. In early July SBC’s
accrediting agency granted us
approval to offer online courses. We
are now offering a certificate in
ministry studies – a program
designed to equip lay leaders in
churches to effectively minister in
their context, without having to leave
their context for training.
In the coming years we plan to
expand our course offerings in order
Today Count
to provide opportunities for people to
complete their degrees online, and
for high school students to get
advanced placement.
Another exciting development in
August was the discovery of transfer
credits to the University of Manitoba.
Without having to modify our
curriculum, our students are
receiving excellent transfers into the
university. This means that students
can come to SBC for a year, or two,
and have most or even all of their

courses transferred.
These exciting events call for a new
look! We want our promotional
material to reflect our desire to make
every day of a student’s experience at
SBC count for the kingdom of God.
Equipping Servant Leaders
Our world is lost. SBC trains
servant leaders to bring the good
news of Jesus to the world.
Each year SBC offers a Summer
Ministry Scholarship to students who
are serving in summer ministries.
Because of this support, students are
free to spread the gospel at Bible
camps, through Living Bible
Explorers, Youth for Christ, and
mission trips around the world, while
continuing their education at SBC.
In 2012, 21 students received a
bursary of $150 for each week of
service, totaling a distribution of
$32,000 and over 230 weeks of
service!
Our students come not wanting to
make a difference “someday”, but
to make a difference today.
Faculty Feature: Arlene Friesen
Twenty-eight years ago, I entered the
halls of SBC as a college student. My
life ambition? To be a single
missionary and translate the Bible.
However, during my third year I
realized that God sometimes plants
desires in our hearts to get us moving and then redirects
us. I followed his redirection, marrying Jake Friesen and
following him back to his home church in southern
Ontario. It wasn’t exactly missionary work, but it was a
different culture.
I had many opportunities to develop gifts and leadership,
first as a youth leader for six years and later, after
studying at Tyndale Seminary, as a worship coordinator
for eleven years. During those years of church ministry in
Aylmer, I also discovered a love for teaching. So when my
husband was
hired by our
denomination
(EMMC) and we
moved back to
Manitoba, I was
happy to take up
the challenge of
teaching some
courses at SBC. I
soon realized
that part of what

I loved about teaching was the development of
relationships and seeing lives change. That’s why I am
thrilled to be here in a permanent position, being in the
midst of the community that is SBC.
Outside of SBC, we enjoy the opportunity to host
students in our home in Winnipeg. We attend Nassau
Street Church (EMMC) and volunteer with the Salvation
Army, tutoring newcomers in English.
