Stile Antico
Performing editions reconstructed and prepared by members of
Stile Antico
For its fourth recording, Stile Antico spotlights the work of a neglected Tudor master: John Sheppard. The
programme displays his genius across the range of genres in which he composed, including Catholic liturgical
responds and hymns alongside simple English-texted anthems written in the reign of Edward VI. As its
centerpiece, the great antiphon 'Media Vita' is a reflection on the frailty of human life and the hope for
salvation.
Stile Antico is an ensemble of young British singers, now established as one of the most original and exciting
new voices in its field. Prizewinners at the 2005 Early Music Network International Young Artists'
Competition, the group is much in demand in concert, performing regularly throughout Europe and North
America. The group's most recent release, Song of Songs, won the 2009 Gramophone Award for Early Music
and reached the top of the US Classical Chart.
Notable engagements in the 2009-10 season include a New York debut in the Music before 1800 series,
appearances in the Spitalfields, Rheingau, Barcelona and Al-Bustan Festivals, and performances in France,
Belgium and Estonia.
"Stile Antico is hot property nowadays and was hardly likely to turn down a gig at York - it was
through taking part in the Young Artists Competition a few years ago that they got their break. ..
Spanning more than two centuries of music, it was a programme of works by composers aware of
their own mortality. …The highlight of the concert was John Sheppard's Media vita, a vast work,
which was beautifully paced by the group - another motet that mirrored the great arching roof of
York Minster's chapter house particularly well.
This was a wonderfully homogenous sound:
the ensemble sings through the phrases in
such a way that gives direction while never
appearing rushed." Early Music Today
Gabriel FAURE
Piano Quartets No. 1 Op. 15, No. 2
Op. 55
Trio Wanderer, Antoine Tamestit (viola)
Gabriel Fauré was a remarkable pianist who included
his instrument in almost all his compositions, but
seldom as a soloist: he preferred to combine it with
chamber ensembles to produce the intimate
atmosphere he so favoured.
Until the early 1870s, Parisian musical life revolved
around opera, to the detriment of instrumental works.
Existing institutions paid little attention to the scores of
young French composers. The Société Nationale de
Musique, founded in 1871 and presided by Camille
Saint-Saëns and Romain Bussine, set itself the mission of promoting French music and offering a forum for the
dissemination of orchestral and chamber works. Its founder members also included César Franck, Lalo, d'Indy,
Duparc, Massenet, and Fauré, who became secretary in 1874. In an interview with Le Petit Parisien in
1922, he spoke of the importance of the Société: “The truth is that, before 1870, I would not have dreamt
of composing a sonata or a quartet. Only when Saint-Saëns founded the Société Nationale de Musique in
1871, whose primary aim was to put on works by young composers, did I set about doing so.”
And in fact almost all Fauré's chamber works had their
premieres under the auspices of the SNM: the two violin sonatas, their counterparts for cello and piano, the
piano quartets, the First Piano Quintet, and the Piano Trio.
Since 1999, the Trio Wanderer has released, on the Le Chant du Monde and harmonia mundi labels, a series
of recordings that have received a warm welcome from the press.
Born in 1979, Antoine Tamestit studied with the Tokyo Quartet at Yale University and Tabea Zimmermann in
Berlin. He was a BBC New Generation Artist (2005-07) and a Borletti- Buitoni Trust scholarship holder in
2006. He made his debut at the Lucerne Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti in 2008.
The Berlin Konzerthaus has offered him a residency in 2009/10. He will premiere in several cities (Berlin,
Vienna, Graz, London) a concerto written for him by Olga Neuwirth.
44 Duos for two Violins
Angela & Jennifer Chun (violins)
Rather than mere technical studies, Béla Bartók's 44 Duos for 2
Violins are studies in musicianship and the integration of folk song
into the composer's personal idiom. All but two of the themes are
traditional - culled from the 'peasant' tunes Bartók gathered in his
fieldwork. For this spirited recording, Angela and Jennifer Chun
have prepared a new grouping of these colourful miniatures.
Thierry PÉCOU
Symphonie du jaguar / Vague de Pierre*
Ensemble Zellig, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France /
François-Xavier Roth & Jonathan Stockhammer*
An irresistible energy irradiates the entire sound material of
Thierry Pécou's orchestral music, right down to the silences.
This almost spiritual celebration of rhythm is extremely rare in
contemporary composers. Impelled by their rhythmic drive, the
Symphonie du Jaguar and Vague de pierre explore the mysteries of
the pre-Columbian mythologies of Maya Mexico and the literary
painters of ancient China. The Symphonie du Jaguar refers to the
cyclic course of time and the trajectory of the sun (Kin), in its incarnation as the daystar, and in the form of a
red jaguar in its journey into the bowels of the earth where it is regenerated. Here there are five cardinal
points - east, west, north, south, and centre, symbolised respectively by the four solo instruments (clarinet,
trombone, violin and cello) and, in the centre, the female chorus; at the end of the work, the clarinet and
trombone emit calls in the five directions.
Whereas the Symphonie du Jaguar was inspired by Mayan civilisation, Vague de pierre - 'Stone wave', a literal
translation of 'Shi Tao', the name of a Chinese literary painter of the late Manchu dynasty - is underpinned by
an external source, the writings of François Cheng and François Jullien on art and philosophy in China.
Born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1965, Thierry Pécou has received many prizes for his compositions, which
have been commissioned by leading institutions and performers.
He frequently performs his own works at the piano, as director of Zellig, a flexibly sized ensemble devoted to
new music of which he is the founder, or as soloist with orchestra in his piano concertos (Tremendum and
L'Oiseau innumérable).
ALSO AVAILABLE: HMC901974 L'Oiseau innumérable/Alexandre Tharaud
"His collaboration with Pécou brilliantly synthesizes the delicacy and translucency of French composition
post-Ravel…The result is an appealing sound world and a highly recommended recording."
Idealised by romantic myth, Frédéric Chopin is one of the most celebrated composers in history.
This virtuoso pianist devoted his whole output to his instrument and developed a unique style which made
him “an extraordinary artist” (Berlioz). Here the musicians of harmonia mundi present some of his most
famous pieces, a glimpse of the inner world of this genius who “made use of art solely to fulfil his own tragic
Romeo & Juliet
London Symphony Orchestra / Valery Gergiev
DSD recording, live at the Barbican November 2008
LSO Live celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2010.
The label's first release of the year features Prokofiev's
spectacular score for the ballet Romeo & Juliet
conducted by Valery Gergiev.
Gergiev is a tireless champion of Prokofiev's music.
In 2004 he conducted the complete cycle of the
composer's symphonies with the LSO which then won
a Gramophone Award. Shortly afterwards Gergiev
became Principal Conductor of the LSO and spent
much of 2008 and 2009 touring Prokofiev's symphonies
with the orchestra in Europe, Japan and the USA.
Gergiev's Mahler cycle continues in February 2010 with the release of the Fourth Symphony. Other upcoming
releases on LSO Live include a Rachmaninov symphony cycle as well as music by Ravel, Stravinsky, Debussy
and Strauss.
Concert reviews:
"The strings were supple and radiant ...
The brass, much used by Prokofiev, were
tirelessly accurate, and the woodwind
especially characterful, with some of the
orchestra's younger members playing out of
their skins. The best ballets contain music
almost too good to be wasted on dancers.
Freed from the need to adopt dance
tempi, this wonderful music swaggered,
sparkled and shimmered as it rarely does in
the theatre" Mail on Sunday
"Most concert conductors only take bites
out of Prokofiev's virile but lengthy ballet.
Not Valery Gergiev. He knows that the
complete score is a treasure chest of
musical characterisation, orchestral colour, soaring melody and blasting drama: manna from
heaven for himself and the London Symphony Orchestra" The Times
"Gergiev and the LSO's performance was simply magnificent, not just in the quality of the orchestral
playing but in the range of colours and delicacy Gergiev drew from his players" classicalsource.
Jansons
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra focused extensively on
Messiaen in its 2007-8 season. A major musical figure of the 20thcentury,
Messiaen (1908-1992) created an entirely unique musical
œuvre in which such divergent elements as divinity, as it relates to Catholicism and other doctrines, ornithology
and the synaesthetic perception of sound as colour are all interconnected with his innovative rhythmic
and harmonic musical language and tonal organisation. As a thinker and teacher, Messiaen carried out groundbreaking
work in music during the second half of the century, but his work as a composer has remained
unsurpassed. During this special season, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra programmed works not only
by Messiaen himself, but also compositions by his musical predecessors, students and disciples, including three
premières of works commissioned by the RCO: Geert van Keulen's orchestration of Paul Dukas's La plainte,
au loin, du faune…, Marc-André Dalbavie's La source d'un regard (The Source of a Look) and Robert Zuidam's
Adam Interludes.
With this second release in the Horizon CD series, dedicated to contemporary repertoire, RCO Live has
captured this resounding homage to Olivier Messiaen in superb five-channel stereo.
The People United Will Never Be
Defeated
Kai Schumacher (piano)
Rzewski studied with such names as Walter Piston,
Roger Sessions and Randall Thompson. He studied
composition with Milton Babbitt and the music of
Richard Wagner with Oliver Strunk at Princeton
University from 1958-60, where he also studied Greek
literature and philosophy. In addition, he studied
composition privately with Luigi Dallapiccola in Rome
in 1960. As a pianist, he frequently performed with the
flautist Severino Gazzelloni in the 1960s. He then
co-founded with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum
the improvisational and live electronic ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva, in Rome in 1966 and performed with
it from 1966-71. Since then, he has been active as a pianist, primarily in performances of his own pieces and
music by other contemporary composers, making an appearance at Huddersfield Festival in 2009.
The People United Will Never Be Defeated is based on the Chilean protest song, '¡El pueblo unido jamás será
vencido!', written by Sergio Ortega a few months before Pinochet's military coup in September of 1973.
"One day in June, 1973, three months before the bombing by Pinochet's military coup, I was walking through
the plaza in front of the Palace of Finance in Santiago, Chile, and saw a street singer
shouting, "The people united will never be defeated" - a well known Chilean chant
for social change. I couldn't stop, and continued across the square, but his incessant
chanting followed me and stuck in my mind.
On the following Sunday, after the broadcast of the show "Chile Says No to Civil
War", which I directed for Channel 9, we went with a few artists to eat at my
house outside Santiago. Upon arrival I sat down at my piano and thought about the
experience in the plaza and the events at large. When I reproduced the chant of
the people in my head, the chant that could not be restrained, the entire melody
exploded from me: I saw it complete and played it in its entirety at once. The text
unfurled itself quickly and fell, like falling rocks, upon the melody. In their
enthusiasm some of my guests made suggestions that were too rational for the
situation I was composing in. Out of courtesy I pretended to accept, but arranged myself to leave the text in
its symptomatic landscape." Sergio Ortega, on El Pueble Unido
"when I did record "The people united", I haven´t met Frederic before. I´ve sent him my recording in
February (before I got in contact with Wergo) to make sure, that he will like my interpretation and would
support a release - what he absolutely did. We first met in Den Haag at a concert, where an american pianist
was playing the piece - which was the first time for me to hear "The people united" live, except played by
myself. The second time we´ve met in Cologne in June, where Frederic was invited to a festival. We had the
time to work on the piece for a while, but that was no "teaching" by him in a common sense, but more a
discussion about different emotions when the theme comes at the end again, because for me it´s less a
victorious ending but more a kind of melancholic reminiscence. Our meeting did end in a little private
concert he played for me, with some of his new "Nanosonatas" - which really was a pleasure for me."
Ein Heldenleben,
Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
CBSO / Andris Nelsons
What Ein Heldenleben needs is not only a first-class
orchestra but also a conductor with a clear sense of the work's underlying structure, a conductor, moreover,
who is able to maintain the tension and respond quickly and consistently to the work's countless details. This
is certainly how Andris Nelsons sees his task, a task that he realises magnificently in this, his second ORFEO
recording with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra and its music director allow the
orchestral colours to gleam and ensure that the individual sections that make up the score flow smoothly,
sweeping the listener along with them. This reading of Ein Heldenleben has such stringency and rigour that
many of the aesthetic objections to the work merely add to our pleasure at individual details, while never
calling into question the piece's overall design.
The fact that Nelsons is also a master of the art of transition in the music theatre and can achieve this on
the concert platform, too, is clear from his recording of the Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, which under
Nelsons' direction becomes spontaneously compelling and coherent, and which the CBSO clearly take
pleasure in.
Stephen Maddock, the CBSO's chief executive says: "At a time when record labels are reducing their
commitment to the core symphonic repertoire, we're delighted to have found in Orfeo a partner who is
showing this level of commitment to Andris and the CBSO. In this way we can bring what we are sure will
be outstanding accounts of composers who are very close to Andris's heart - and who have mostly not
featured until now in the CBSO's large discography - to the widest possible international audience".
"it's one thing to make this music sound natural and idiomatic, quite
another to make an old warhorse of a symphony sound fresh, as he
does." CD OF THE WEEK Daily Telegraph
"The opening of Tchaikovsky's fifth symphony has seldom sounded so
taut and introspective, conductor and orchestra breathing as one.
Nelsons and Birmingham promises to be one of the great partnerships
of the coming decade." Norman Lebrecht
"The CBSO may not command the sheer power of the BPO/Karajan or
VPO/Gergiev Fifths, but for sensitivity to balance and phrasing you would have to go back to
Kempe's to match this Symphony Hall recording under the orchestra's new Latvian conductor."
The Accademia degli Arcadi - that thought provoking and ideas-creating literary circle set up by a group of
poets, composers, aristocrats and churchmen, which championed a return to classical (and pastoral) ideals
and one of whose keenest members was the Marquis Francesco Maria Ruspoli, Handel's patron in Rome -
forms the aesthetic background for this sixth and penultimate release in the series of Italian cantatas by the
Saxon composer which Fabio Bonizzoni and La Risonanza are making for Glossa.
In an engrossing essay written by Carlo Vitali, which benefits from the counsels of Michael Talbot, the reader
is introduced to the social and political references contained within the pastoral texts of Olinto, pastore arcade,
Duello amoroso and Alpestre monte, the three Handel cantatas which make up this CD. Bonizzoni turns again
to three of his regular singers as well as counting upon the services of his exceptional first violinist, the young
Swiss Leila Schayegh, an up-and-coming player whose talent is undisputed.
The spring of 2010 is anticipated as seeing the conclusion of this Handel collection, the grand finale being the
marvellous cantata Apollo e Dafne. Volume five is a Gramophone Critics Choice 2009.
Handel came to Italy as a promising, ambitious young composer bursting with talent, and left it as a mature
composer, permanently impregnated with the light and the vocal art of Italy. Some of the great works were
written during these significant years in his development (La Resurrezione, Dixit Dominus, Il trionfo del tempo e
del disinganno, Aci, Polifemo e Galatea, Rodrigo…) His cantatas, however, are the great unknowns in his output,
within which it is precisely these works that emerge as an important test bed for his music.
Winter & Winter has entrusted this task to a young ensemble, Forma Antiqva, which marks the Munich label's
first collaboration with Spanish musicians.
The work of the three Zapico brothers with Forma Antiqva inevitably recalls the Kuijkens from Belgium, and
in the youngest generation, the Ashby sisters who form part of the excellent group Stile Antico.
This first Spanish 'commitment' by Winter & Winter is completed by the participation of the young singer
Xavier Sabata: he possesses everything that is needed for these cantatas: clear diction, imagination, passion,
engagement and the power of conviction. Thanks to him, the epoch of Spanish 'sopranisti', who enjoyed welldeserved
fame throughout Euope, and inspired many to undertake their own personal 'Viaggio in Italia', has
made its way back into our consciousness.
new works partially attributed (in a somewhat doubtful manner) to Handel.
This is Galassi's third disc for Glossa (following Il Viaggio di Lucrezia in 1998 and Les Harpes du Ciel in 2003,
two CDs which have been quietly acquiring cult status), and on it she shares centre stage with the keyboard
player Giovanni Togini, who acts as the ideal musical companion on organ, harpsichord and fortepiano.
Piano Sonatas Nos 17, 24, 30 & Bagatelles Op. 126
Andrei Korobeinikov (piano)
Each of Beethoven's 32 sonatas has its own special character. And,
modest though they are in their aims and dimensions, the
Bagatelles show the composer at his very greatest.
Andrei Korobeinikov, born in Moscow in 1986, has performed in
more than 20 countries all over the world and won more than
20 prizes in national and international competitions, among them
the Alexander Scriabin International Piano Competition in 2004
and the Rachmaninov Piano Competition in Los Angeles in 2005, where he also received the Audience Prize.
At the age of 19, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory with an exceptional award as 'best student of
the decade'. In 2005 he pursued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London with the aid of a
Scholarship. Now regularly invited over the world, he has appeared at Festival International de Piano de La
Roque d'Anthéron, the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, the Wigmore Hall and the Chipping Campden Festival
in London, the Gstaad Festival, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and the Performing Arts Center
"Korobeinikov unleashes the sonatas' pent-up fury with such wonderfully unbuttoned directness that
it is hard to complain. There are no half measures in his playing, the technique is formidable; it is a
genuinely thrilling disc." The Guardian
"Andrei Korobeinikov's recital of music taken from the composer's middle and late periods will surely
become a compulsory addition to all lovers of Scriabin's neurotic and compulsive genius…Such
playing, finely recorded and presented, makes further recordings by this phenomenally gifted
young pianist a necessity rather than a probability." Bryce Morrison, Gramophone
For many years, the Chamber Choir 'Les Cris de Paris', renowned for its commitment to contemporary
creation, has had the habit of ending its shows with an 'Encore'. Specially written by the arranger of the band,
and derived from songs outwith the world of classical music, a bold new repertoire has been built from
Madonna, Zappa, Björk, Kylie Minogue and Spears (Britney…) but also Brel and Gainsbourg…
To celebrate its 10th birthday with a wink, Alpha has supported this special venture that scrambles the
boundaries and the brains. The pure pleasure of music making is to be found here, exclusively realised by the
singers, including all the instrumental and percussion effects, with a technical level of virtuosity from each of
the singers; and finally a quality and the creativity in the arrangements which brings new life to the original
pop songs.
Special project means special packaging. The Encores album has little in common with their usual collections,
and so ALPHA in festive anniversary mood have given it a distinctive identity with a tactile circular metal box.
"The work of Guillaume de Machaut dominates the French 14th
Century. It was bequeathed to us thanks to 6 illuminated
manuscripts kept in the French National Library in Paris. Those
manuscripts assemble the full poetical and musical works of the
composer, structured as a very precisely organised entity. The
musical part is composed of motets, virelais, ballads, lais, rondeaux
and the famous Messe de Notre Dame.
Thanks to the research of 20th century musicologists, we can now
assess the full importance of this work enabling performers to read his music directly from manuscript sources
and make us more and more familiar with this ancient media. This proximity with Guillaume de Machaut is
an essential component of our work as a polyphonic ensemble. In this new recording devoted to the canon
of Reims, we invite you to follow our poet-musician in the fantastic and experimental world of his ballads."
Platée - opera in prologue and three acts by Jean-Philippe
Rameau with libretto by Adrien-Joseph Le Valois d'Orville.
Rameau bought the rights to the libretto Platée by Jacques
Autreau and had d'Orville modify it. The ultimate source
of the story is a myth related by the Greek writer
Pausanias in his Guide to Greece.
Rameau's first attempt at comic opera, the plot concerns an ugly water nymph
who believes that Jupiter, the king of the gods, is in love with her. It was written
for the celebrations of the wedding of Louis, Dauphin of France, son of King Louis
XV of France, to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, who, according to contemporary
sources, like the title character, was no beauty.
Instead of getting the composer into trouble, the entertainment at Versailles
seems to have been well received, and Rameau was appointed a few months later
to the position of Composer of the King's Chamber Music with a sizable annual
pension. The opera was first performed on 31 March 1745 at the Grande Ecurie,
Versailles. UK performances by the Mark Morris Company played to consistently
packed houses and rave reviews.
SCHUBERT / BERG
SCHUBERT String Quartet No. 13 'Rosamunde' D804, Gretchen am
Spinnrade D118, Die Götter Griechenlands D677, BERG Suite Lyrique,
Schliesse mir die Augen beide (1900+1925 versions),
Quatuor Thymos; Salomé Haller (soprano); Christoph
Eschenbach (piano)
'Thymos': a word that was used by the ancient Greek philosophers
to refer to feeling and emotion… And it was
the spirit of thymos that brought together the musicians of
the eponymous quartet, first-prize winners from the Paris
and Lyon Conservatoires and members of the Orchestre
de Paris.
The Thymos Quartet, like Calliope, is keenly interested in music of the Viennese school. This recording
presents two masterpieces, representing two different periods in the rich history of Viennese music: Franz
Schubert's String Quartet No. 13 'Rosamunde', completed in March 1824, and Alban Berg's Lyric Suite, a “suite
for string quartet” (Berg's own words), written between September 1925 and October 1926. The latter is
Berg's first extended 12-note composition, using the technique that Schoenberg had developed in 1923.
In January 1977 the American musicologist George Perle discovered a copy of the score of the Lyric Suite
annotated by Berg, in which the composer revealed its secret programme: without that key to the code, the
complexities of this work would be indecipherable. The Lyric Suite is the story of a passion, recounting the
episodes in the personal drama of an impossible love: that between Berg and Hanna Fuchs-Robettin.
The musicians of the Thymos Quartet feel in tune with the aesthetic of this work, which calls for a very subtle
balance between individual performance and harmony between all the players. It is a very difficult work
to perform and one that is deeply moving for the performers.
Schubert's String Quartet No. 13, also a moving work, refers to the inevitability of death; we discover in this
composition an almost symphonic expression of violence, and it is also a tragic yet intimate confession. In
this quartet Schubert quotes his lieder Gretchen am Spinnrade D118 (text by Goethe) and Schöne Welt, wo bist
du? D677 (text by Schiller); Berg's Schliesse mir die Augen beide, to a poem by Theodor Storm, is connected
with his Lyric Suite. These songs are therefore presented on this recording in order to give a fuller picture.
These songs, as well as the sixth movement of the Lyric Suite, are performed the young soprano Salomé
Haller, who was as enchanted by this programme as the musicians of the Thymos Quartet are.
The musicians of the Thymos Quartet have played this programme many times. They came to the notice of
the conductor Christoph Eschenbach when they presented it at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris, as a result of
which he subsequently invited them to the Ravinia Festival (Chicago, USA) where, in August 2005, they performed
Alban Berg's Lyric Suite with the Debussy String Quartet and (with Eschenbach at the piano) Dvorak's
Piano Quintet (to be recorded on the Calliope label in November 2010).
In 2006 Christoph Eschenbach invited the Thymos Quartet
to take part in the Orchestre de Paris's Boulez cycle at the
Salle Pleyel in Paris, where they performed Webern's Five
Movements, Opus 5, and Berg's Lyric Suite. From that time
dates their desire to take their work one step further by
recording the latter.
with forces akin to those of the 16th century - a small group of children and a larger number of men. The
singers respond with their characteristic freshness, and an emotional authenticity born of the daily round of
liturgical performance.
RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester / Ferenc Fricsay (conductor)
Berlin 1950 / 1952
Ferenc Fricsay's love of the waltzes by Johann Strauss II
exemplifies his opinion that there is no difference between
‘popular’ and ‘serious’ music but, if needs be, between good and
bad music. Thanks to his own musical education and his first post as conductor of a military band in Szeged,
he was very familiar with the repertoire and the musical world of 19th century Vienna. When the 34-year-old
was called to post-war Berlin in order to help rebuild musical life in the western part of the destroyed city as
director of the newly founded RIAS Symphony Orchestra, he passionately performed the music of Strauss
from the outset. This is also documented by his ravishing recording of Die Fledermaus [see audite 23.411]. This
CD presents a representative cross-section of the most beautiful and famous waltzes and polkas by Strauss
recorded between 1950 and 1952, issued here for the first time. In these, not only do Fricsay's (in)famously
precise rehearsal methods become perceptible but also his unique talent of improvisation, i.e. an art of interpretation
where the highest degree of precision becomes completely natural, and spontaneous, music-making.
Felix MENDELSSOHN
The Complete String Symphonies
Stuttgarter Kammerorchester / Michael Hofstetter (conductor)
The thirteen string symphonies that Mndelssohn wrote between
1821 and 1823 are not only evidence of his exceptionally rapid
development, they are also examples of wonderful, virtuoso
music that reveals the influence of CPE Bach, JS Bach and Handel.
This new complete recording of these works on the ORFEO
label features the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Founded more
than 50 years ago, the SCO has gradually built up a repertory
that extends from the Baroque to the present day, thereby guaranteeing a flexible and keenly differentiated
kind of playing, due not least to the ensemble's principal conductor, Michael Hofstetter, who is likewise at
home in a wide variety of styles. The verve of the first symphony's opening Allegro is maintained throughout
all the fast movements, while the slow movements are characterised by their gently flowing cantabile lines,
which extend to the quotations of folksongs found in the two 'Swiss' symphonies. The last two symphonies,
finally, are notable for their contrapuntal procedures and polyphonic accomplishment. Here the composer
and his interpreters have found an appropriately playful approach to complex fugal subjects and
developments. In this way this set of youthful works is brought to a suitably masterly conclusion, providing a
further powerful addition to the 2009 celebrations marking the Mendelssohn bicentenary.
THE GERMAN BAROQUE ERA
wellas performing as a soloist with La Petite Bande, Les Arts
Florissants, La Fenice, Il Seminario Musicale, Il Gardellino,
over 30 discs with Philippe Herreweghe, Gerard Lesne, Veronique Gens, William Christie, Christophe Rousset,
Sigiswald Kuijken...
Her keen interest in French music of the 18th century lead her to rediscover the violin sonatas of Francois
Francœur, of which she has made a world première recording for Alpha "As for Mira Glodeanu, we find intact
once again her fervour, her compelling sonority, her rustic bow, and her heightened sense of mood as evident
in the drunkenness of the adagios as in the joys of the finales" (Diapason).
She performs on a violin by Augustin Chappuy (Paris, 1750), preserved in it's original condition, and a rare
violin by Marcin Groblicz (Krakow, 1604). Here she peforms the German Baroque solo violin repertoire.
Live Recording 11. November 1960
Smetana's The Bartered Bride, performed in German, it has long been a regular part of Vienna's mainstream
operatic repertory. In 1960 this production was captured by Austrian Radio in a performance that
immortalised the interpretations of the original principals from 1959. The cast was headed by Irmgard
Seefried, a great favourite with Viennese audiences. At the time of this recording she could already look back
on a stage career lasting 20 years, and yet she had retained the youthful freshness necessary for Marie/
Marenka. The other half of this dream couple was Waldemar Kmentt as Jeník, or Hans, one of the roles with
which the Austrian tenor was rightly most closely associated. The tragicomedy of his stuttering stepbrother is
well caught by Murray Dickie avoiding buffo excess. The self-infatuated and vainglorious marriage broker Kecal
is entirely plausible when the role is played by another Viennese operatic institution, the distinguished
Upper Austrian bass Oskar Czerwenka. The smaller roles are also cast from strength by singers of
the calibre of Hilde Konetzni, Rosette Anday and László Szemere, all of whom milk their brief scenes for all
that they are worth. A lively and yet always well-disciplined performance is further guaranteed by the Chorus
and Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera under the direction of Berislav Klobucar, who, often criminally
undervalued, presided genially over countless repertory performances in Vienna.
Irmgard Seefried’s interpretation of the Composer in Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos is said to have inspired
Strauss himself to exclaim that until then he had not known how good his Composer was. She was also one
of the most sought-after concert singers and lieder recitalists of her age. Not released until now, the many
recordings included in the present CD attest to the richness and variety of that palette even during the early
years of her career.
The earliest of these recordings are Peter Cornelius's Brautlieder from the heyday of the Romantic art song,
settings in which the soprano's exemplary treatment of the words and the vocal line are fully in evidence. The
affinities between this cycle of six songs and the traditional German folksong offer the singer - a native of
Swabia - a welcome opportunity to colour her tone even further, an approach that is also found in her
recordings of songs by Mozart, Brahms, Wolf and two lesser-known composers, Wilhelm Kienzl and Joseph
Marx. This compilation of Irmgard Seefried's recordings from the first ten years of her career in Vienna
additionally includes some of Strauss's most popular songs, songs such as Morgen and Allerseelen that make it
clear why, as we noted above, their composer held the soprano in such high regard.
