So, after much feedback, I have changed things up a bit, again. I'm still trying to get my stride in
this job. This should work better for those of you who print these out.
I made it a bit more narrow, and contrary to my designer nature, the background is white. Let me
know if you prefer this or the one from last month.
Sincerely,
From the President
I have got to tell you I am really enjoying summer. No not this...un-seasonably
cold weather (I have nicknamed us Seattle, California) but because we have
had some great tours here in the Redwood Region.
We just finished with the Maple Creek Wine tour. The roads that Kurt and
John picked were some of the most scenic we have here in the wine country
and our hosts at Maple Creek made everyone feel welcomed and relaxed.
Vern will fill you in with all of the details further down in the Newsletter.
Our Autocrosses have been keeping everyone on their heel and toes and if you are still not sure if
this is for you come on out and get your feet wet. We have some of the best instructors around and
if you do not have a helmet we can cover you on that also. Or if you just want to take in the
scenery of racing and the
interesting aircraft that abound please feel free to come on out.
Speaking of racing, we'll be back on the grass at Turn 2 for this year's IRL race on August 21-22.
For more information, go the the Redwood Region website.
Looking ahead we have our seventh annual Artisan wine tour hosted by Greg and Nancy
Chambers. This is always sold out due to their wonderful hospitality and fine wines so sign up right
away by going to the website.
The month of September finds us on another great tour where Kurt will lead us to our very own
Redwood Region member's Holger and Martina Seibert's German bakery for the fourth annual
Oktoberfest. There we will experience authentic German food and all things Oktoberfest.
Just a few of the activities we have going on here and to keep yourself up to speed go to the
website, your PCA IPhone app. or log onto Facebook and see what is happening up to the minute.
See you at the next event.
Greg
Mary Neidel,
Social Director
Calling all Ladies...
With all the changes on the board recently I
thought it would be a good time to introduce
myself as your social chairman and invite you
to give your input on our social activities.
After all, as the PCA website says, it's not
just the cars, it's the people.
We have some great annual events in our
region but I'd like to open it up to new and
different events. Whether your face is familiar
to us or not I encourage you to let me know
your ideas. If you would like to plan and put
on an event of your own, I am here as
resource for you and I'm happy to help in any
way I can.
We are blessed to have wonderful roads and
world renown wineries in our region but we
have so many other things we can do. It
would also be great to see more women
involved in events and planning. So come on
ladies, this is your chance to promote the
events you would enjoy attending.
I am putting together a social committee to
brainstorm for future events. If you are
interested, please email me at
salinahs@yahoo.com and type "social" in
the subject.
Be sure to plan to attend the Redwood
Region's Holiday party on Saturday,
December 18 th at the Corinthian Yacht Club
Kurt's Corner
As of this week, we have 170 members on our Facebook
page and I encourage you to take a look at it and sign up.
What we can do with Facebook is include a lot of interesting
Porsche articles with links and video's and most
important...post pictures of our events taken by our
members that will never make our der Riesenbaum
newsletter because of space limitations.
Facebook allows us to also give notice on future events and
schedule RSVP's to these events.
We have become the de facto source for other PCA Regions on setting up their
Facebook pages. Recently, I assisted the Loma Prieta Region on getting their page up
and running!
Facebook is a great social networking tool that is easy to use and set up your own
page. You think Facebook is just for kids...the average age of the members who are
fans of the Redwood Region is 55 years old! About 89% of the Redwood Region
members have computers and routinely use the Internet.
Here is the link to Facebook! Check it out! You will need to sign up.
http://www.facebook.com
I have several upcoming events in the works:
Saturday, September 25, 2010, our members, Holger and Martina Seibert, who own the
"Pure Grain Bakery and Café" on the town square of old town Vacaville have invited us
to their 4 th Annual Oktoberfest. They will have unique German foods for us to sample
and there will be several thousand people there. This is a natural...Porsches and
Oktoberfest.
I have planned a great 75 mile back roads tour to Vacaville and the combo of the Pure
Grain's food and German beer will make a great tour!
This event is on the Redwood Region website calendar so send me your RSVP's! Got
lederhosen... wear them!
Next event for me is the Classis Sports Racing Group (CSRG) vintage races on Sunday,
October 3, 2010 where we will have a Porsche only corral in the paddock area at
Infineon Raceway and be treated to great vintage races! This event is also on the
website calendar. Special discount tickets at the gate!
That's all for this month! Have questions...here I am
Maple Creek Tour
The gathering for our tour to Maple Creek Winery and Meyer Family Cellars started at a very
civilized 10:00am at Kal's Café in Windsor. The weather was ever so slightly cool, and just
beginning to warm (a foreshadowing of things to come). The later than usual start time allowed
several of us to have a leisurely breakfast before the usual camaraderie and kicking of tires in the
parking lot.
It was just about time for the drivers meeting when a totally new couple showed up. Not PCA
in Tiburon. It is going to be a great evening
in a spectacular venue. Watch for more
information.
members (yet), but Porsche owners none the less. Mary Wellonan, had come over to Kal's to get a
morning coffee for herself and her husband Jerry when she noticed our sizable (33 cars) group of
Porsches in the lot. She headed back home and returned with hubby in tow. Redwood Region
members being the welcoming sort that we are enthusiastically asked the newcomers to join us for
the tour... gotta love this group! I got the Wellonans to sign the waiver form, Greg handed them PCA
membership brochures and they added their number to the rest of the happy group.
Once our newest attendees had received tour directions, Kurt led the driver's meeting, and handled
the rest of the instructions and formalities. We pulled out of Kal's parking lot at about 10:30 and hit
an excellent set of West Sonoma County back roads, winding our way Northward to and across the
Mendocino County line. Thank you Kurt, great route!
A bit over an hour later we rolled into Maple Creek Winery where the temperature had risen to
about 90. We were greeted by Tom Rodriguez, the winery owner. Tom and his staff/family had laid
out a nice grouping of serving and sitting tables in the shade. The serving tables soon filled with
grilled chicken, salads, breads and desserts.
Two ladies behind the tasting bar made for short lines and happy club members. Plenty of water, in
addition to the fabulous, wine selections was provided to quench thirsts and keep us hydrated.
Among the several excellent wines poured was the 2007 Artevino (Maple Creek's label combining
Art and Wine) Largo Ridge Zinfandel, which for a time was held to be the best zin in the world...
Ask one of the attendees for the story. Also poured was the 2007 Artevino Symphony. This grape
was developed in Davis, and combines the mouth feel of a rich chardonnay, with the amazing floral
nose of a Muscat. Maple Creek, under the Artevino label is one of two producers of Symphony in
California. Please take a look at the winery website for further details on a wide selection of fine
wines: www.maplecreekwine.com
A scrumptious potluck lunch showing off the many culinary talents of Redwood Region members
was served once our palates had been whetted. Grilled chicken was provided by the club. Once
the munching and visiting had slowed, an opportunity was provided to take advantage of the
generous purchase discounts that Tom and Linda had arranged especially for the club.
After packing up wine purchases and returning to our cars, we were off to Meyer Family Cellars, just
a short drive up the road. Many of us making the trip got to practice our skills at making U-turns...
the winery entrance was a little hard to spot. A beautiful grape-arbor-covered picnic area awaited
us. The temp was still in the high eighties, but a light cool breeze had begun to blow, much to the
delight of all.
Meyer Family Cellars, as the name implies is owned by the Meyer family. Those of you who love
Cabernet will remember the name Justin Meyer of Silver Oak fame. Silver Oak was one of the
most sought after Cabernets of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Justin Meyer owned 50% owner of the
winery. He sold his interest in 2000, as the Silver Oak had grown to the point that it no longer had
the intimate feeling of its beginnings. The Meyers started the winery with the hope of a return to
that feeling.
Our arrival was greeted by Justin's son, Matt who was pouring the 2009 Chardonnay. He followed
this with the '05 Mendocino County Syrah, and the Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet. Bonny's vineyard is
the one property originally owned by Silver Oak, that Justin retained. It is named for his wife
Bonny, and still produces one of the best Cabernets in the state. Matt finished off with the Meyer
Family Port, which is zinfandel based, and fortified with locally produced zinfandel brandy. A sweet
and delicious way to conclude our tour.
More information on Meyer Family Cellars may be viewed at their website:
Connections with both of these wonderful wineries were made possible by John Bergman. John,
the club and the board want to acknowledge and thank you for making this trip possible. Our region
before events are scheduled.
RR PCA will not be doing the Eureka trip this year due to scheduling and resource conflicts.
Blast Emails - Should be submitted to Kurt who will compose and hand off to Rob to send
out. Next blast will include the Artisan Wine Tour.
Members have been asking about RR PCA hosting track days @ Infineon. This was deemed
impractical by the board due to cost ($20k), lack of personnel, and availability of track days
through other sponsors, local regions such as Diablo, Golden Gate and Sacramento Valley.
Membership Chairman's Report:
Rand submitted his resignation (and apologies) due to being called back to active duty in
New Orleans.
Rand recommended that Ron Breeze take over as membership chair
Ron requested information as to actual job duties, and was directed at Bret.
Rand noted that Bret has agreed to help out for the next 45 days, but that his schedule is
very tight.
There was concern that Ron, as a Mac user, would not be able to use the MS Access
software that had been purchased for Rand to import membership information and produce
membership reports based on MS Access templates originally created by Dave Benson.
Ron was also concerned about stepping on the toes of other members with more experience
in the club who might want to be membership chair. He was assured that this was not the
case.
