On 18th September 1988 (1), the Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum
was signed in Bologna by the Rectors of 430 universities. The Magna
Charta, which has since been signed by another 400 Rectors, affirms the
autonomy of university education, and the essential link between teaching
and research activities which transcend the limits imposed by "any
geographical or political border". The signing took place as part of the ninth
centenary of the University of Bologna, which was formally recognised as
the Alma Mater of all universities. The Alma Mater has many university
campuses in Emilia-Romagna and it also inaugurated a campus in Buenos
Aires in 1998.
On 19th June 1999, 29 European Ministers of Higher Education signed the
so-called “Declaration of Bologna”, which defines the major objectives for
the creation of a European Area of higher education and the promotion of
this system throughout the world. To meet these objectives European Union
member states are required to restructure their university systems by 2010.
More than 100,000 students are enrolled at the University of Bologna,
making it one of the largest universities in Italy. The University has 600,000
m 2 of floor space for teaching and extra-curricular activities distributed over
a multicampus area (2). Its 23 Faculties offer 268 degree courses including
146 first level degree courses, 110 specialised degree courses, nine European
specialisation courses, two magistral and 86 master courses.
Regularly enrolled foreign students number 4,200, while another 1,900
Socrates/Erasmus and Overseas. More than 2,300 University of Bologna
students go abroad on exchange programmes or on study grants.
Recent years have seen a rapid expansion of computing services. Through
the automated library service users can access a catalogue of 2,000,000
books and 5,239 periodicals (3). In 2006, the University’s Web Portal
System gained an average of 10,300,000 page views per month, making it
the most visited university site in Italy.
