When restyling the “NEROLA” label, the client wanted to 

further develop the concept of environmentally friendly wine. 

The coloring of the leaves that encircle the bottle so elegantly 

complements that of the wine, stylishly delivering the core 

message of a wine that respects both the environment and 

tradition. The choice of Stone paper—the most organic 

printing material available on the market—for printing the 

labels was no accident, and confirms the client’s diligence to 

protect the environment. During its usage cycle, Stone paper 

decomposes and reverts to the raw material from which it 

was created— stone. The overall effect conveys a sense of 

harmony and nature, and enjoying the simple things in life 

from a luxurious standpoint. The use of digital offset printing 

effectively resolved the small but technically challenging 

details for our client. The client was particularly impressed 

with the ability to change the legal texts according to the 

destination of orders (other countries), without the additional 

costs entailed when printing on a traditional press.

ILS, the supplier partner for Orrington Farms—a brand of dried 

seasonings and soup bases—has provided print solutions for 

multiple brands for the parent company over the last several 

years. We have educated the various ILS teams on the value 

proposition of the HP Indigo print platform, including the print 

quality, graphic flexibility, and sustainable supply chain. We 

encouraged them to make the transition from their cut and 

stack labels on standard semi-gloss material, which lacked shelf 

appeal and didn’t reflect the gourmet quality of the product, to 

more premium look labels printed on textured Estate 9 material 

with a Matte UV varnish, with higher end graphics that better 

speak to their target audience. This Orrington Farms product 

line has eight different SKUs, each with iconic graphics to assist 

in creating a nice merchandising display and to help shoppers 

navigate through the line and choose the right product for their 

needs. The HP Indigo press helped us to incorporate these types 

of graphics onto the label. This re-design, together with the 

switch to the textured Estate 9 pressure sensitive material has 

elevated the brand to a premium position in its category and has 

made a great impact with consumers.

breakthrough. It is, however, a magnificent example of the superb 

print quality that can be achieved on an HP Indigo digital press on 

an ever-widening range of substrates. Our extensive in-house 

priming experience allowed us to prepare this holographic stock 

for digital printing. Our color critical expertise allowed us to print 

fantastic looking labels with integrated color chips across a large 

number of different colors. The client got “shelf-shout” without 

complexity or excessive inventory. A digital print win!

The artwork provided by the customer was very detailed 

and aesthetically pleasing. The challenge was to print 

press proofs and sleeves, with a turnaround fast enough 

for the sleeves to reach the manufacturer, in China, on 

time. This order was color critical and we were able to 

color-match even the more difficult colors for a digital 

press, such as orange and pastels. Digital printing meant 

there were no plates and no setup involved–proofs were 

ready in one day for color approval. With the quick turn 

around on proofs and the customer’s approval, we were 

able to meet the deadline.

The Argo Tea brand is a ready-to-drink tea launched into market 

several years ago. ILS worked with the brand, marketing and 

design teams from the initial stages of product launch to share 

the value proposition of digital printing with the goal of taking 

full advantage of the technology. Each of the SKUs incorporates 

customized graphics to reflect the flavor profile and personality 

of the individual tea. The imagery is beautiful and really 

complements the hourglass shape of the bottle. The marketing 

team even incorporated a QR Code into these latest revisions. 

During the various iterations in the development stage, we were 

able to show the client proofs that were printed on the press 

that would be used for production and on the actual material. 

Changing and updating graphics in conventional printing is very 

costly, but using the plate-less technology of the HP Indigo press 

it was not an issue. The client was able to truly see the value of a 

total package print life cycle solution.

operation in our facility. The goal was also to show the

The three designs were developed to showcase the graphic 

flexibility of the press, including how completely different each 

individual SKU can be. We also incorporated a QR Code into 

one of the sunscreen versions to demonstrate how easy it is to 

create limitless versions within a version.

As a manufacturer of sweet, edible promotional items in a wide 

range of versions, packaging plays the most important role 

when it comes to communicating with the customer. Initially, 

packaging and ecology appear to be irreconcilable. As a result 

of sustainable and consistent product development, we have 

succeeded in mitigating the discrepancy between environmental 

protection and emissions in the area of promotional items. The 

primary packaging material is fully biodegradable - as is the 

secondary material. The poison dart frog, one of the world’s 

most poisonous animals, escalates the target conflict between 

the German word “Gift” (meaning “poison” ) and “gift” (in the 

sense of “a present”) ad absurdum. The special color of purple, 

in interplay with the 4 color euroscale colors, means that the 

frog really glows and stands out amazingly vividly. The product is 

used to advertise our own company.

the packaging was achieved by flood coating the material with 

metallic silver ink prior to flexo printing.

We set out to create a holiday gift package as part of our 

promotional campaign to help strengthen and expand our 

client base, while demonstrating our ability to push the 

boundaries of our profession. The packaging itself was 

challenging due to its unusual size and its complicated folding 

pattern. Luckily, however, we had the use of the Kongsberg 

i-XE32 to cut the boxes, and a number of co-workers who 

readily volunteered to assemble the gift boxes. Once folded and 

glued, the box was folded yet again to create a 3-dimentional 

triangle that was held together using a tied ribbon. Although 

most of the assembly work required was done by hand, the 

impressive end-result was well worth the effort as it has 

successfully generated many orders for digitally printed cartons 

and boxes with our company.

The challenge was to produce an order for 200 printed 

hardhats, with the employees’ names printed on their 

respective hardhats, while keeping the price as close to the 

standard quantity price as possible. Boyallgraphics & Print Ltd 

offered individually tailored helmets by electronically merging 

the artwork with the list of employees’ names and then, using 

an HP Indigo press ws2000, printing high quality pre-deformed 

images directly onto specialist plastic like sheets. These sheets 

were then vacuum-wrapped around the hardhats, with the 

artwork taking on the correct format as the sheets adhered 

to the hat. In 2011 this technique was effectively launched and 

marketed into the construction industry with resultant orders 

and sustained growth into 2012.

The tissue and bag were created in response to a customer 

being unable to find a source that could produce these products 

quickly and to their color and branding requirements. We 

initially struggled to produce the items, but managed to eke 

out the products in time for the client’s needs. We recognized 

the potential and embarked on perfecting the products and 

processes used to create them. Tissue paper is a notoriously 

difficult substrate to image. It is currently printed on flexographic 

equipment, with 5,000 sheet minimums, expensive spot color 

plates, a 4-6 week lead time, and coverage not to exceed 20%. 

We spent almost a year doing R&D to determine the correct 

chemical treatment of the paper, figuring out how to get the 

substrate through the press successfully, and then how to finish 

and handle it post printing. We now produce a product that can be 

fulfilled in a few days, without the cost of plates, and with heavy 

full-color coverage. It is completely unique in both the printing 

and tissue industries. The coordinating gift bag represents a 

unique high-end product that, for the most part, is currently 

manufactured overseas in Asia. We believe we are the only US 

manufacturer that produces this style of bag with our intricate 

manufacturing process.
