Overview
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a student-managed, non-profit organization
that is committed to recruiting, retaining, and motivating its membership to successfully
complete a college education. It is an organized network of support for individuals
who are typically underrepresented in the engineering and science community. By
implementing programs that promote academic excellence, personal growth, and career
development, NSBE continues to increase the number of professionals who are committed
to community development and are prepared to successfully compete in corporate
America.
Since its inception in 1975, the Society has grown to represent over 35,000 members
and 270 colleges and universities worldwide. The collegiate chapter of NSBE at The University
of Texas at Austin was chartered in 1982 due to strong student interest in promoting
the goals of the national organization
on campus. Since then,
the UT-Austin chapter has become
UT NSBE Events
NSBE encourages all engineering, math, technology, and natural science
majors to join the organization. During the first few weeks of school, tables
are set up around campus with a display of NSBE's accomplishments,
along with promotional material. At the tables, we publicize the
events that make up Membership Week. These events include a study
night, a general meeting, Major Myx Part 1, a community service event,
and a social event. The primary objective of Membership Week is to
showcase all aspects of NSBE to new and old members.
Expected Participants: 45-65 students (total membership)
Cost of Support: $600
General Meetings
UT NSBE has bi-weekly meetings that cover the chapter’s upcoming events, networking
with corporate representatives, and presentation topics that will help
develop our members. These meetings are a source of information as well as a
mechanism of professional and academic enhancement for the membership.
To the left is a calendar of events and meeting dates for the 2012-2013 academic
year. Tentatively there are fourteen general meetings scheduled for the upcoming
year. We would like to diversify our partnership with corporate supporters not
only through general meeting but also various events we hold throughout the
year.
Expected Participants: 45-65 students per meeting
Cost of Support: $800 per meeting
Academic Initiatives
Page 6
Excellent grades are very important to be competitive in today’s job market. As a result, the academic
achievement and development of NSBE members is our top priority. We focus on helping members develop
essential study skills to increase their GPA. This includes presentations at general meetings that cover issues
such as note taking, listening skills, communicating with professors, and time management. In addition, we
participate in ongoing study sessions throughout the academic year that encourage our members to remain
focused on academics.
Major Myx
This academic initiative was created in Spring 2009 to promote communication
between upper and lower classmen in each engineering
discipline. During the first Major Myx session, each engineering discipline
gathered with their counterparts and exchanged contact information;
participation from other minority engineering societies is encouraged.
By exchanging contact information, upperclassmen act as
tutors and mentors to underclassmen throughout the year. There will
be multiple Major Myxes throughout the year to ensure that members
are able to interact with upperclassmen as a resource and ultimately
excel in their engineering courses.
Expected Participants: 30 students
Cost of Support: $400 per Major Myx
NSBE Mission Scholarships
Member Scholarships and the Freshman and Officer of the Year Scholarships are only for UT-Austin NSBE chapter members.
The requirements are largely based on the fulfillment of our organization’s mission. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate
academic excellence, participate in NSBE career building programs, and contribute to the well-being of the community. The
recipient must also demonstrate cultural responsibility and be an be active student in the Equal Opportunity in Engineering
(EOE) program.
We are looking for corporate support in the amount of $500 for each NSBE Mission scholarship. As the applicant pool for the
scholarships continues to be competitive, we would like to offer four scholarships throughout out the 2012-2013 year, two
member only scholarships in the fall and a Freshman and Officer of the Year Scholarship in the spring semester. Supporter
NSBE Freshmen Action Team
The NSBE Freshmen Action Team (FAT) is intended to increase the number of first year students who are active members of
NSBE. To do this, the Freshmen Action Team encourages its members to actively recruit other first year students (including
transfer students) who may not know about NSBE or who are non-active members.
The Freshmen Action Team host their own meetings to sharpen their presentation and leadership skills, among their peers and
the CEB. Every freshman team meeting will be counseled by the Freshmen Action Team Advisor as well as members of the CEB
or other seasoned individuals of the chapter that will be able to lend guidance and advice to these first-year students on fulfilling
their academic and professional goals.
The members of the Freshmen Team also receive information and
training in developing leadership and study skills, adjusting to
college life, program planning, motivation, goal setting, communication,
time management, and working as a team. Emphasis is
placed upon excelling academically so that NSBE can continue to
produce and increase the number of graduating NSBE members.
The freshmen are responsible for conducting business in an effort
to achieve the FAT mission. In tradition, they host the last general
meeting of the year which includes honoring the graduating seniors
of the semester. The team will also be given several responsibilities
to fulfill throughout the year such as fundraising. Most importantly,
members who participate in the Freshmen Action Team
emerge as leaders in the organization and display well-rounded
knowledge of NSBE.
Expected Participants: 15 Freshmen students
Cost of Support: $150 per meeting
Lunch and Learn
The “Lunch and Learn” program is a new program that we want to
host for our members this year. In the industry today, new products
with cutting edge technology are being developed everyday. We want
our members to be able to learn from the technical professional in the
industry about how classroom theory applies to production in the real
world.
The corporate supporter of this event will be able to showcase the
newest technology they have designed within their respective industry.
They will also be given the opportunity to interact with members
who are interested in their company in a smaller setting. Overall, we
hope that this event can be something we host twice throughout the
school year, and that it will become and annual event in the future.
Expected Participants: 25 students
Cost of Support: $400 per Lunch and Learn
Page 7
NSBE’s second key point from the mission is professional development. We know that it is essential to understand
how to excel in a corporate environment. Our chapter strives to incorporate freshmen into our membership
from the day they step foot onto campus. We believe that we can give them an opportunity to mature
as a student and as a young professional, so they will be valuable to their future employers. Professional development
is also emphasized at our annual conferences.

Community Service
A Walk For Education
A Walk for Education is a national initiative designed to “increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the
STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering and other technologies.” We focus, not only on children
currently in school, but also on adults who have put their higher education plans on hold.
NSBE Members are divided into teams that are responsible
for visiting high schools throughout east Austin, an at
risk area. We will be giving out packets that include college
entrance requirements, financial aid information,
Apply Texas Applications, scholarship information, and
various materials designed to increase awareness of
what it takes to attend college. We recognize the significance
of people receiving this information from others of
similar cultural background and experiences.
We also reward our participants’ efforts with free lunch
and t-shirts. The event brings representation from a multitude
of organizations and unites the UT minority population
together for a positive cause by fulfilling the last part
of our mission, “…to positively impact the community.”
Expected Participants: 50 students
Cost of Support: $500
Hunger Awareness Day
The purpose of this event is to give back to those in the community that are less fortunate
than others and that might be in need of food. With the help of other organizations
on campus, we will meet in the morning to prepare sack lunches. We then split into
groups and give out lunches in different areas of Austin to those in need, also spreading
awareness of widespread hunger that exists in our communities. This is one way we can
“positively impact the community”. This year will mark our ninth annual Hunger Awareness
Day.
Expected Participants: 30 students
Cost of Support: $500
T.O.R.C.H. Community Service
T.O.R.C.H. (Technical Outreach Community Help) is a national community service program. Its goal is to increase the number of currently underserved
communities that have access to digital technology and technical assistance and desire to increase the technical skills of its community
population. Through implementing the T.O.R.C.H. Program, we expect that these communities come to appreciate the value of technology and
embrace its use. The UT Austin Chapter plans to give back to the surrounding communities by providing weekly tutoring in mathematics and science
to students at Eastside Memorial Green Tech High School. We assist the faculty and staff in preparation for the State of Texas Assessments
of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Test and general math classes throughout the school year.
Expected Participants: 10 students per week
Cost of Support: $250
Page 8
Community outreach is a core initiative in our mission. We try to host at least one community outreach initiative
a week and two major outreach projects each semester. Our community service projects engage minorities,
high school youth, STEM majors on campus, and the local Austin community. Our chapter is passionate
about community outreach and participates in A Walk for Education, high school tutoring, an annual Hunger
Awareness Day, and other related events.

Pre-College Initiative (PCI)
The PCI program is designed to encourage minority youth to attend college and to open their eyes to the engineering,
math, and science fields. A pipeline development initiative, it is one of the most important programs
in which NSBE is involved. The PCI program includes mentoring, tutoring, the PCI Mini-Conference, a
NSBE Jr. Chapter, and social events which engage high school, collegiate, and alumni chapters.
Shadow Day/YES Day
High School Youth Pursuing Engineering
(HYPE) Conference
The HYPE Conference facilitates a transition between the high school
and college levels, through current minority engineering students who
can enlighten younger students about college admissions, daily campus
life and engineering. NSBE members/mentors lead an open forum
with the younger students to find out the concerns they have about
their academic future. NSBE's role in helping them deal with those
concerns is discussed.
African-American students, as well as those who have overcome social
or economic hardship, are highly encouraged to participate. The HYPE
Conference is open to all students interested in the STEM fields of
science, technology, engineering, and math. This program is aimed
towards promoting community outreach and grooming leaders at a
young age.
Expected Participants: 20 high school students
Cost of Support: $500
NSBE Jr. Program
NSBE Jr. is an ongoing partnership with high schools that provides students with the information needed for college such as financial
aid, admission applications, college life information and career choices. The high school chapter operates as any other NSBE
chapter. The students elect officers, conduct meetings, facilitate fundraisers, and recruit members. The NSBE collegiate chapter
members serve as mentors, advisors, and positive role models. They assist the students in classes and attend the NSBE Jr. meetings.
The high school students interact with the college students by attending NSBE general meetings, attending campus tours, and
participating in social events. NSBE Jr. students also have the opportunity to attend NSBE conferences and conventions where they
can compete in academic competitions, but their attendance is largely dependent on external funding. This year we plan on hosting
a seminar that will provide the students with an introduction to the diverse opportunities a student has when they enter the STEM
field.
Expected Participants: 30 high school students
Cost of Support: $750
Page 9
UT NSBE Shadow Day was created in the spring of 2009 to form a relationship between UT NSBE and local Austin high schools. This event
gives high school students the opportunity to learn first hand what it is like to be an engineering student at a major university. The high school
student accompanies a current engineering student to a few of their classes, after attending classes the high school students attend a Q&A
Panel where they can ask the questions they desire. This program began with one participant and grew the following year to 10 students.
Investment in this program is important because students do not have many opportunities to truly experience the day-to-day life of what it is
actually like to be a college student. This program can inspire students not only to attend college, but to also pursue majors in the STEM field.
Expected Participants: 20 high school students
Cost of Support: $300

National Convention
NSBE Conferences
As a means of fulfilling our mission, NSBE holds several conferences on the regional and national level. The
conference provides students with the opportunity to network with professionals and attend workshops designed
to sharpen leadership skills. These conferences also incorporate workshops to enhance professional
development and academic excellence. The bulk of the costs of these conferences are travel arrangements
and local accommodations. The UT-Austin NSBE chapter is looking for corporate support to help send members
to the conferences listed below.
Regional Leadership Conference
Fall Regional Conference
The Regional Leadership Conference
gives NSBE leaders an opportunity to
learn functional duties related to their
positions as well as critical team building
and project management skills. This
conference is held annually prior to the
fall semester.
Date: August 3 rd — 5 th, 2012
This conference is a networking experience
and opportunity to conduct regional
business within NSBE. It typically
consists of a PCI conference, various
professional and academic enhancement
networking sessions, a career fair
and a community service event.
Date: November 9 th — 11 th, 2012
The National Convention gives NSBE
