Clarence Bennett always 

has a gleam in his eyes 

and a smile on his face. 

“I have been a positive 

person all my life and 

I’m not going to change 

now,” the 81 year old 

says.

York, Clarence was born 

in Pittsburgh, but raised 

in Queens. Like many 

New York residents , he 

and his wife were deeply 

affected by the events of 

September 11, 2001. 

“My wife was working 

near the towers and it got 

us thinking about moving,” Clarence says. 

The couple discussed moving to the area after hearing about 

Salisbury from a friend. They ultimately purchased some 

property on a golf course in Salisbury, and they have come to 

love the area and all it has to offer. When Clarence got sick

the couple was relieved to learn about the services offered by 

Coastal Hospice. 

“My wife has to also take care of her ill mother, so we are 

both so grateful for all the help we have gotten from Coastal 

Hospice. I’ve been treated very well. Everyone is very kind 

and very good at their jobs. They come in and take care of 

whatever I need. They do things for me that I can’t do for 

myself.” 

Accepting hospice care was not easy for him at first, since he 

had always taken care of his own needs. 

“I’m a very independent person, so I have had to get used to 

people taking care of me.” 

Clarence also had to overcome some reservations and 

myths about hospice care, but it didn’t take long for this 

retired educator to do his homework. “I’ve become more 

knowledgeable about it and I learned that hospice is not about 

dying. Hospice is about making you more comfortable in the 

time you have left and that is a great gift.” 

When asked how he is able to keep such a positive attitude, 

he responds quickly with a genuine and simple answer. 

“If I look good it’s only because Coastal Hospice has helped 

me so much,” he says. “It’s been a good thing and I’m just so 

happy to have their help.” 

When Kathi Gottesman decided she 

Volunteer Spotlight wanted to volunteer, it didn’t take long for 

her to decide where. In the spring of 2011 she 

became among the first volunteers at the Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop in Berlin. Originally 

from New Jersey, Kathi took early retirement from a marketing career, and she and her 

husband, Neil, moved to Ocean Pines a few years ago. Neil has been a patient care volunteer 

for several years, so for Kathi, Coastal Hospice was a natural choice. 

The purpose of the Thrift Shop is to raise funds for a hospice residence, a goal that Kathi 

feels good supporting. “I like the idea of building a place for people who don’t have anyone 

to take care of them.” 

And she truly enjoys her time in the shop, working with others who also support Coastal Hospice. “Everyone is wonderful, 

it’s such a pleasant atmosphere and we’re providing quality merchandise at a low cost. “When people come in it really changes 

their idea of what a thrift shop is. This shop is more like a boutique.” 

Kathy says volunteering at the Thrift Shop is rewarding, productive and fun. “I like to keep busy, and I can do that here, and 

I’m helping Coastal Hospice at the same time. I really enjoy it. I have been really fortunate in my life and so I’m happy to do 

what I can to help others.”

My mother has dementia due to multiple strokes and cannot make any decisions for herself. 

Q. On several occasions she has choked on food and developed pneumonia. Her advanced 

directives say she wants “everything done” and lists me as her health care agent. I am concerned 

that she might have to go on a breathing machine and I do not think that is a good idea. What 

should I do? 

Since your mother does not have the capacity for 

A. medical decision making, those decisions fall to 

her advanced directives and to you. The clinical situation 

that you describe is called aspiration pneumonia. It is 

common in elderly, debilitated patients and caused by food 

going down the trachea (windpipe) due to poor swallowing 

reflexes. It is likely to recur and sometimes results in 

treatment with a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine). 

This question has to do with patient rights. Patients have 

the absolute right to refuse any and all medical therapy, 

even if it would be curative. On the other hand, they do not 

have the right to demand futile care.

Judith Dorsey who retired to Florida 

after five years with Coastal Hospice. 

April previously worked for Coastal 

Hospice as Director of Organizational Excellence. She has 

a vast amount of experience in her career, from working 

in the trenches as an exemplary nurse to serving as a 

Regional Compliance Director for another hospice. “We 

are very fortunate and happy to have April back on our 

team,” says Coastal Hospice President Alane Capen.

Since your mother’s advanced directives may result in a 

request for futile care, her rights are not absolute. Should 

a future episode of aspiration pneumonia put her in severe 

respiratory distress and a ventilator is being considered, 

you do have some choices. If, in the best judgment of the 

physicians caring for her, a ventilator would simply prolong 

the dying process and you concur, it is acceptable to decide 

not to put her on the breathing machine. Oxygen and 

medications can be used instead to keep her comfortable. 

These decisions are always stressful for families. Most 

hospitals now have palliative care teams that can provide 

support for you; ask for their help.

Jamere Jenkins, a junior at the University of Virginia, 

became the first amateur player to win the tournament in 25 

years! Jenkins, ranked 1,214th in the world, defeated Ruben 

Bemelmans, ranked 147th in the word, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to claim 

the Purnell-Thomas championship in his first ever appearance 

at the event held at Salisbury University. Thanks to the Tennis 

Committee and to Salisbury University for helping make this 

event a success year after year!
