GPA, RANK IN CLASS, & HONORS
A student's Grade Point Average is determined using a 4 point system and includes HKIS
grades only. This GPA is computed by using official transcript marks beginning with the
first semester a student attends HKIS, and is based on all classes where a letter grade is
given. (Exception: 'P' grades are not included in the GPA). All marks are given equal
weight. One official grade is given at the semester endpoint and represents the total
semester's work. The minimum grade to receive credit is D-. HKIS does not use percentage
equivalents of letter grades. Median GPA for the Class of 2010 in September 2009 is 3.33
on a 4.00 scale. HKIS does not calculate rank in class.
Honor Roll, High Honors, and Headmaster’s Commendation is determined each semester
using the final grades in quarter and semester courses. A minimum of five letter grades
(excluding P) is necessary to qualify for recognition.
HR - Honor Roll requires a GPA of 3.25 or higher and no grade lower than C-.
HH - High Honors requires a GPA of 3.5 or higher and no grade lower than B-.
HC - Headmaster’s Commendation requires no grade lower than A-.
National Honor Society: A Faculty Council elects students to the HKIS chapter of NHS.
Selection is based upon careful consideration of scholarship, service, character, and leadership.
A GPA of 3.50 or higher is required for membership eligibility. Sophomores, juniors, and
seniors may be eligible for membership.
French, Spanish and Chinese Honor Societies: Membership in these societies is awarded
by the respective teachers based on outstanding performance in study of the language
coupled with an overall good grade point average.
HKIS POLICY ON EARLY DECISION/ACTION AND STUDENT SUSPENSION:
Early Decision: All students are informed that Early Decision is a global decision and
should they be accepted, they are no longer allowed to apply to any additional US or non-
US university. The students are aware their college counselor will inform all other colleges
to which applications have already been submitted of the ED acceptance.
Early Action: HKIS only allows their students to apply to ONE Early Action program.
Suspension: HKIS will disclose to the colleges on any out-of-school student suspension.
Please Note: All our seniors complete the FERPA agreement online through Naviance.
