Isortoq
Indbyggere: 104 (2009)
jægers synspunkt, findes svaret overalt omkring dig: Exceptio nelt
gode jagtbetingelser.
Isortoq
Population: 104 (2009)
Meaning of the name: the foggy sea
Isortoq is Ammassalik’s smallest and westernmost settlement which
lies on a flat, barren island, 50 miles southwest of Tasiilaq with direct
access to the Denmark Strait. There aren’t any tall peaks to protect
the small group of houses against nature and the fury of the sea –
this is easily seen in the locals’ weatherbeaten faces. Only 3 miles
west of the small island, the mighty Greenlandic Icecap rises to a
height of 10.623 feet at its peak.
Isortoq is truly a wild place where you, depending on the season, get
to feel the intensity of nature power. On arrival – to what looks like
the World’s end – you might wonder what made people settle here
in the first place. Seen form an Inuit hunter’s point of view, the
answer is apparent; exceptionally good hunting grounds.
The many islands and big and large fiords, combined with enormous
amounts of drift ice and huge icebergs from the many glaciers of the
area, makes Isortoq a true paradise for large amounts of seals. It is
also the settlement from which the most rugged hunters and most
highly skilled dogsled drivers come.
The main source of work is, not surprisingly, hunting and fishing.
Isortoq’s location makes it a natural starting point, or “finish line”,
for most of the crossings of the Greenlandic Icecap and many
hunters supplement their income with gifts from these sports
expeditions.
