About Benign Phyllodes Tumors
Of The Breast
• Phyllodes tumors of the breast
hardly ever happen and less than
1 out of 100 women get them.
Most women who have these
tumors are in their 40’s and 50’s.
They are oval tumors (lumps).
• No one knows what causes
these breast tumors. There is
no way to keep from getting
the tumors. There is no
medicine to cure the tumors.
These tumors can grow in
one or both breast.
• This type of tumor may be
benign (not cancer), cancerous,
or borderline. It is hard to tell
how big the tumor will be.
Less than 1 out of 5 of these
tumors will become cancer.
• This tumor will not go away
by itself and should be taken
out by surgery. Because of the
chance of cancer, the whole tumor
should be removed completely
with negative margins.

Edge of the

– Positive margins mean that some
cells of the tumor are at the edge of
the breast tissue that was taken out.
If surgery is needed, just the tumor
is taken out, and not your whole
breast. This means there may still
be some tumor cells left in your
breast. You may need more
surgery to take out any tumor cells
that are left

– Negative margns mean that the
whole tumor has been taken out
along with a small amount of
normal breast tissue all around
the tumor.
• It is important to keep checking your
breast in case the tumor comes back
or a new tumor grows. Your health
care provider will tell you how often
to get mammograms and follow up exams.

• Casi nunca ocurren los tumores Phyllodes

– Márgenes positivos quiere decir
que algunas células del tumor están
al borde del tejido del seno que
sacaron. Si se necesita cirugía,
solo sacarán el tumor y no todo el
seno. Esto quiere decir que aún
pueden quedar después células en
sus senos. Puede ser que necesite
más cirugía para sacar otras células
del tumor si las hay.

– Márgenes negativos quiere decir
que todo el tumor se ha sacado
junto con una pequeña cantidad de
tejido normal del seno alrededor
del tumor.
• Es importante seguir chequeándose los
senos en caso de que el tumor vuelva
o un nuevo tumor crezca. Su profesional
de salud le dirá con qué frecuencia debe
hacerse mamogramas y otros exámenes.
