Course Description
This is a one-day conference designed for all providers
(audiologists, speech pathologists, teachers, hearing
aid specialists, physicians, etc) involved in the care of
pediatric patients with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum
Disorder (ANSD). The course will cover many key
topics in the management of children with ANSD. Our
objective is to provide the attendees with up-to-date
knowledge in this field to enable them to employ best
current practices when treating these children.
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
• Discuss appropriate diagnostic tests for
identifying ANSD in infants.
• Discuss risk factors for ANSD
• Reiterate the major genes that can be
responsible for ANSD
• Discuss the potential physiologic sources of
ANSD
• Explain the medical implications of ANSD.
• Recognize the value of different types of
radiographic imaging in children with hearing
impairment.
• Identify factors favorable and unfavorable
to surgical intervention for children with
ANSD.
• Describe the audiological profile and
medical characteristics of children with
auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder
(ANSD)
• Identify strategies for audiologic
management of children with ANSD including
hearing aids and cochlear implants.
• Describe strategies for counseling families
of children identified with ANSD
• Identify realistic expectations for a child
with auditory neuropathy and cochlear
implants to develop spoken language.
• Identify two ways to measure auditory
perception at the beginning of each therapy
session to use as a baseline.
