As you can see in these pages,
we have received an offer from
Sharon Lutheran Church. And
we are now faced with making
a decision. A decision about our
future and our place of worship.
The gospel for Sunday, January 17
spoke to this issue. Jeus is talking
with a samaritan woman, who
asks him about the right place of
worship. And Jesus answers:

come when the true worshipers

of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers
must worship in spirit and in
truth.” (John 4:23)
We know that and believe that
to be true, and yet we love our
“holy places”, our
places of worship
and we care about
them. It is hard
to get used to
changes. We know,
that one place is
not “holier” than
the other and
that one way to
worship is not
better than the other, but we
have to admit that we rest more
in what we know, what we have
become accostumed to. But we
must never forget that God’s
word and the work of Jesus
and the Spirit is not limited to
what we know, and that he will
reveal himself where and when
he chooses.
Therefore let us make God part
of our decision and turn to him
in prayer, just as Solomo did
February ‘10/ March ‘10
when he dedicated the temple.
This is part of the Old Testament
reading for that same Sunday:
“... give attention to your servant’s
prayer and his plea for mercy, O
LORD my God. Hear the cry
and the prayer that your servant
is praying in your presence this
day. May your eyes be open
toward this temple night and day,
this place of which you said, ‘My
Name shall be there,’ so that you
will hear the prayer your servant
prays toward this place. Hear the
supplication of your servant and
of your people when they pray
toward this place. Hear from

Communion Workshop – Saturday, February 20
at 10:30 am for families and other interested people
there will be a workshop on Communion
Saturday, February 20 from 10:30 am – noon
Questions we will try to answer:
Why do we celebrate communion? How did it start?
What is the bread like? What is in the little cup? Why
do we kneel? .... and so on.
Has your child – or you – asked any of these questions?
On February 20 we will try to answer these and many
other questions and introduce those, who have not

received communion yet to this special rite in our
church. We welcome everyone at the Lord’s table and
want all to feel comfortable.
Please sign up on the sheet in the entrance, so we
know how many to plan for.
Spaghetti Service – Saturday, March 20 at 5 pm
Our third Spaghetti service is planned for March 20.
We begin at 5 pm with a short
service in the church and after
that a pasta meal is ready in
the hall. A big thank you goes
to the Viking Girls who have
taken on the role of hosts and
do a wonderful job of setting
up and serving the meal.The kids can play and watch a
movie and the adults visit over coffee after the meal.
Everybody is welcome – with children or
without.

The Danish Lutheran church has been approached
by Sharon Lutheran Church 210 – 10th Avenue N.E.
Calgary to merge the two churches.
The offer from Sharon Lutheran Church was
discussed first with a meeting set up for the two
boards at the office of Sharon Lutheran Church and
we also had time to be shown the facilities.
Lengthy discussion at our January board meeting
showed that the board has many questions and some
hesitations in going into the merger. Also we have a
comfortable “at home” feeling in our building. Yet
looking into the future, there may be possibilities,
and there is a certain feeling of responsibility for
the Danish heritage. The overall feeling was not to
rush things, but to take time for thinking, researching
and planning. The offer from Sharon will be on the
agenda for the Annual Meeting.
We will go ahead with a combined service at Sharon
Lutheran on Feb 28, 2010 where all are welcome.
Liselotte will conduct the service and our regular
church service at the Danish Lutheran church will be
cancelled. Hope to see you all there.

From the church board ...
The Annual General Meeting of
The Danish Lutheran Church
Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 12 noon at The Danish
Lutheran Church
Everybody is invited to come and hear about what
is happening at the Danish Church. Bring your own
lunch. Beverages will be provided.
In order to make time and opportunity for questions
and discussion, the Agenda and the Reports will be
written and they will be available from March 14th at
the church. If you can not come to pick yours up, call
the pastor and we will send you one.
Much has been achieved in the past year. The new
parsonage next to the church is ready and the
applications for a new pastor have come in. On top
of that we have been approached by Sharon Lutheran
church. Many decisions will have to be made and
there will be changes in 2010. We are looking for new
members to the church board who would like to be
part of this exciting time and help us move forward.
New minister search
Our board has worked intensively with DSUK,
Denmark http://www.dsuk.dk/ in trying to find
a suitable candidate as a replacement for Liselotte
Basbøll for 2010. There were seven (7) applicants of
which we now have weaned it down to two. With
DVD’s and possible visits of the two candidates we
hope to select a suitable minister.

Recipe of the Month
Recipe of the Month
Danish Ryebread
3 1/2 cups of water
1/4 cup of molasses
2 tsp salt
2 tsp dried yeast dissolved in ½ cup of lukewarm water (add a dash of sugar)

3/4 cup raw sunflower seeds, 3/4 cup 7 grain cereal, 3/4 cup rye flakes, 3/4 cup rye kernels,
1 ¾ cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup white flour, Rye flour
Mix first 4 ingredients; add the rest, as much rye flour as it takes to make a very dense dough. Use
a Mix Master, or you will have to do some kneading by hand. Roll into two loafs; use 5”X 9” loaf
pans. Pierce with fork, cover and let rise for a couple of hours, brush top with water and bake at
350 F for about 50 - 60 min.Slice thin. Submitted by Inge Skovmose
Building Committee
We will likely be taking position of the new
parsonage by the end of January. The other
two homes will be completed in the next few
weeks or so. This is pretty exciting news for all
involved. There has been so much hard work
gone into the entire process, and now it is very
rewarding to see then end result. Vicon has
built 3 homes that I think anyone would be
proud to call their own. There is a little bit of

“seasonal work” on all 3 homes that will have
to get done in the spring to finish up the yards
of sidewalks. That will get done as soon as
Mother nature decides it is time. We are now
aggressively trying to sell the other two homes
and have high hopes that the housing market
will continue to improve and interest rates will
stay low.
