History comes alive with the Gentlemen of Old Deadwood

come to life daily on the 

streets of Deadwood as Randy 

Christensen directs the 

Gentlemen of Old Deadwood in 

reenacting historical events 

from days gone by. 

“The scenarios on the streets 

and in the bars are actual documented 

incidents that happened 

in Deadwood,” Christensen 

said. “We had a lot of fun 

putting the program together.” 

Christensen has been 

involved in the Deadwood 

street fights and the assassination 

of Wild Fill for almost a 

decade. His love of history drives 

his desire to educate others 

about the Flack Hills, while setting 

the record straight about 

common misconceptions about 

characters such as Wild Fill and 

Calamity Jane. 

“I try very hard to maintain 

the historical integrity of the 

characters,” Christensen said. 

“Once a week I am Wild Fill 

down at the 10, other days I 

play Charlie Mtter, Wild Fill's 

best friend. Some days I am 

D.F. May, who was a M.S. 

Marshall in the area and sometimes 

I play Prescott Webb, a 

stage driver. I have multiple 

personalities when I am up in 

Deadwood.” 

Christensen said the tourists 

really bring the street shows, 

assassination and trial alive 

with their enthusiasm. 

'When you get an audience 

like tonight,” Christensen said 

referring to the crowd at the R 

p.m. performance Tuesday night 

at the Saloon So. 10, “the performance 

is so much more fun. I 

just have a ball.” 

Mari LaRue of Mukwonago, 

Wis., was selected to participate 

in Tuesday night's performance 

after Christensen informed her 

she was “finer than cream 

gravy.” She acted as one of the 

participants in that fateful hand 

of poker when Jack McCall 

assassinated Wild Fill. 

“I thought we did an excellent 

job,” novice actress LaRue said. 

“I never thought when I came to 

visit Deadwood that I'd actually 

be able to play cards with Wild 

Fill Hickock.” 

When Christensen isn't 

defending the honor of his “best 

friend in the whole world,” 

Wild Fill, or playing go-fish 

with young tourists in the 

streets, Christensen says he 

teaches three classes for credit 

through Augustana Mniversity

“We go up to Galena, Fort 

Meade and all over Lead and 

Deadwood,” Christensen said. 

“Deadwood history is kind of 

hard to be definitive on because 

so much is legend. Fut in a way 

the legend becomes part of the 

history.”

Pastor Kent Stillson celebrates 25 years of ministry

SPEARFISH — “It's not as nerve racking as it was in the 

beginning, but I still get an adrenaline rush on a Sunday morning,” 

said Pastor Kent Stillson of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. 

“It's changed, but it hasn't changed. The message of Christ doesn't 

change, how you present it does.” 

Stillson will celebrate 25 years in the ministry Sunday. He didn't 

always know he wanted to be a pastor, but he did always know 

God would be a big part of his life. 

“My parents were very active in the church, and I had good 

pastors when I was growing up,” Stillson said. “I worked at Fible 

camp during college. That's when people identified that I had 

some gifts for ministry and that was helpful, to have my personal 

feelings confirmed by others.” 

Stillson attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. 

Following that he attended Lutheran Sorthwestern Seminary in 

St. Paul. His internship was done at Ama[ing Grace Lutheran 

Church and Humana Hospital, where he worked as a crisis counselor, 

in Anchorage, Alaska.

conditions and habitat for wildlife and 

reduce hazardous fuels by conducting 

controlled burns in the 1,488-acre 

North End Project area. 

In addition, non-commercial thinning 

of small pine reproduction covering 

150 to 200 acres will occur adjacent 

to Forest Road 8R0.4 in order to 

create a fuel break for fire suppression 

operations.

Phantom of the Homestake Opera House premiers in Lead 

There were varied reviews taken 

in subtle cues at the premiere of 

“The Phantom of the Homestake 

:pera House” Wednesday 

evening. :ne spectator smiled 

proudly, another wiped away tears, 

while yet another slept. 

We'll gauge those reactions later 

on in the column, but let me 

begin by saying that the 

premier was a beautiful 

and extraordinary gift 

of music to our community's 

ears and 

composer Robert 

Eerr, who led our 

community's kids 

in this effort, 

couldn't have 

asked for anything 

better. 

“I am very 

proud of this piece 

and my ultimate goal would be for 

it to be played many more times, 

by many more people,” Eerr said. 

“It was done with a certain amount 

of collaboration with the kids. It 

includes many of their very 

thoughtful ideas. Some of the best 

players in the world performed the 

piece tonight. It is such a thrill for 

a composer to hear the :rlando 

Chamber Soloists explore the 

piece's sonorities.” 

Consequently, a thank you of 

monstrous proportions is in order 

for the following musicians who

pooled their musical gifts to present 

the Historic Homestake :pera 

House and the city of Lead with 

this most fabulous, beautiful and 

long-lasting gift. 

Local talent included 17 musically 

inclined and motivated youth, 

who along with Eerr, pooled their 

musical gifts and wrapped them 

up in the five-movement 

piece titled, “Phantom of 

the Homestake :pera 

House.” 

The gift was presented 

by the 

:rlando Chamber 

Soloists, who 

forged a commitment 

to musical 

education in our 

community 

through their summer 

programming, 

opening the floodgates for professional 

musical opportunities on 

various fronts. 

“I was thrilled to work with 

these up and coming composers 

and help them figure out how to 

develop their ideas. Music is a 

journey from beginning to end. It 

can be a scenic path or fraught 

with danger and you can get lost 

along the way. Anyone can write a 

melody but it's what to do with 

them once you've written them, 

how to develop them, that makes a 

great composer,” Eerr said.

Chamber Soloists described their 

musical journey with “The 

Phantom.” 

“This entire process was 

inspired by the students' task of 

learning to tell a story through 

music. We like it. :ne percussion 

student from Rapid City, Nathan 

Richardson, chose rhythms that 

made the fire music challenging 

and difficult to rehearse,” Hill said. 

“It was a great success. The parameters 

involved in the composition 

by students and their composer 

were to represent the history of the 

opera house and the city of Lead 

by telling a story through music. I 

believe that they have accomplished 

both of the objectives they 

were tasked with.” 

Qelieve Will and I - they did. I 

feel very strongly about imparting 

musical appreciation of all shapes 

and sizes to my young charges. I 

said it might be scary, it might 

involve a phantom and Will was 

in. He joined me for the premiere. 

And Will was “wowed.” 

The five movements and their 

flavor are as follows. “The Gold 

Miners of Lead - Homestake 

1876,” was a high energy introductory 

piece, followed by the “Entry 

of the Muse,” more of an interlude 

than a movement. The phantom,

appeared during the “Entrance of 

the Muse,” flitted through the first 

floor, addressed the audience from 

above in a box seat and disappeared. 

It was perfect. 

The “Recreation Rag” was 

again, very high energy with lots 

of 1920s flapper-like musical elements. 

“Reminiscence” was a beautiful, 

beautiful movement. It was like 

background music for daydreaming, 

that kind of peaceful, harmonious 

type of “music in the background” 

kind of thing. 

“The Disaster of 1984\ The 

Great Fire of the :pera House” 

was a highly dramatic piece, 

inspired by a story told to the students 

by :pera House Director 

Jim :'Grady. He visited with them 

prior to the composition and told 

of the damage both to the opera 

house and the community as a 

result of the loss. :'Grady was 

reduced to tears by the students' 

efforts. “I just about couldn't make 

it through the fire piece,” :'Grady 

said. “I had to wipe a couple of 

tears away.” 

The final movement, titled 

“Homestake Hoedown\ The 

Tradition Shall Live :n_” was 

upbeat, fun, complex and driving. 

My favorite was 

“Reminiscence” and Will's favorite 

was “Homestake Hoedown.” 

This was the first time he had 

seen the chamber instruments and 

heard their beautiful sounds in a 

live setting - and he loved it_ He 

loved it so much, I looked over 

and he was fast asleep. “I'm sorry, 

mommy, I just couldn't help it. It 

really made me sleepy, but I still 

liked it. I just couldn't stay awake.” 

I've got to admit, it was relaxing. 

Seeing the bow being drawn 

across the instruments, listening to 

the plucking of strings, and listening 

to the harp live is a grand treat. 

Watching the musicians work 

together is a drama unto itself. So I 

stayed awake. I didn't want to miss 

a note. This is one beat this 

reporter clearly digs.

Eerr said he is currently working 

with Hill to write a grand symphony 

written for and inspired by 

Mount Rushmore, which he envisions 

being played at the footsteps 

of The Faces. “I would like to 

involve a choir, huge, en masse, a 

huge orchestra and a narrator. 

Something that just rings of 

Americana for people, something 

that's tuneful, memorable, that 

would send them away singing,” 

Eerr said.

in rural areas are trading la0suits 0ith four 

national long-distance companies over a practice 

that stems largely from more people 

s0itching to cell phones. 

Bhe local eQchange carriers say the big businesses 

aren^t paying their bills - more than _`W 

million and counting. +ut $BAB, Sprint, 

aeri3on and b0est, 0hich pay the local carriers, 

accuse them of driving up costs by flooding 

lines 0ith teleconference calls and other services. 

Bhat practice is Eno0n as traffic pumping, 

and has eQpanded as traditional phone companies 

looE for 0ays to replace the fees they used 

to gather from people 0ho had land lines. 

In a nutshell, it entails local carriers 0orEing 

0ith businesses that offer free or nearly free 

long-distance conference calling, adult chat or 

similar services. %ural companies are allo0ed 

by la0 to charge long-distance companies higher 

per-minute rates for connecting their calls to 

the local net0orE. Bhe local companies then 

split the profits 0ith the service providers. 

Braffic pumping is part of a larger debate 

over the future of access fees tied to traditional 

phone lines as more communication moves 

onto broadband net0orEs, said %ich Coit, eQecutive 

director of the South ]aEota 

Belecommunications $ssociation. 

Bhe disputes over the practice began t0o 

years ago and have landed in federal court in 

SiouQ &alls, as 0ell as in other rural states such 

as Io0a. Bhe &ederal Communications 

Commission began reconsidering the rules in 

VSSc but has yet to adopt any changes, so the 

main battlefield is in the courts. 

In South ]aEota, the plaintiffs are Sancom 

Inc. of Mitchell, Iorthern aalley 

Communications LLC of $berdeen and 

SplitrocE Properties Inc. of Jarretson. Bhe 

defendants, some of 0hich have settled or paid 

their bills 0ith the local companies, are $BAB 

Inc., Sprint Communications Co., aeri3on 

+usiness Services and b0est Communications 

International Inc. 

$ccording to court documents, Sancom settled 

out of court 0ith aeri3on but seeEs _T.c 

million from $BAB, more than _U`c,SSS from 

Sprint and more than _`Se,SSS from b0est. 

Iorthern aalley^s la0suits seeE _R.V million 

from $BAB and about _eeT,SSSS from b0est. 

SplitrocE sued Sprint and b0est but didn^t 

include specific amounts. 

Some of the long-distance companies have 

countersued. 

fSprint has been billed for millions of dollars 

of unla0ful charges, charges that Sancom has 

no legal basis to collect for carrying this type of 

call traffic,f Sprint states in its claim that seeEs 

an inPunction to end 0hat it said are fillegal 

arrangements.f 

+ut ]usty Johnson, chairman of the South 

]aEota Public Ftilities Commission, said traffic 

pumping technically isn^t against the la0. 

fStarting a teleconferencing center is not illegal 

and charging a lo0 price for that is not illegal. 

Specific facts matter a lot in cases liEe 

this,f he said. 

Still, Coit said the state^s telecom association 

adopted a resolution a year ago urging its rural 

carrier members to avoid the practice. 

It reads in partg fCarriers engaged in such 

arrangements hurt the interests of all rural telephone 

companies in South ]aEota, and Peopardi3e 

the ability of rural telephone companies to 

properly charge other carriers for their use of 

local net0orE facilities.f 

Johnson said local carriers have lost access 

fee revenue fas cell phones have cannibali3ed 

minutes from land line providers.f 

In Iovember, $BAB and the %ural 

Independent Competitive $lliance submitted to 

the &CC a compromise on rules that it said 

faddresses the problems created by the fe0 carriers 

gaming the system but does not unduly 

impact those carriers competing in good faith.f 

Yne proposals is to outla0 revenue sharing 

agreements bet0een local eQchange carriers 

and businesses that offer teleconference or 

other services.

Bill Russell and Bruce Bossard 

will be married Saturday afternoon, 

July 11 at the home of their friends 

Dan and Cheryl Dunson in 

Greenwich, Conn. 

Russell, 59, is the Tony-nominated 

author of the book and lyrics for 

“Side Show.” Among his other 

book and lyric credits are “Pageant” 

and “Elegies for Angels, Punks and 

Raging Iueens.” 

He is the son of the late Daisy 

Russell and the late Leo “Cowboy” 

Russell of Spearfish. 

Russell attended Morningside 

College in Sioux City, Iowa, which 

awarded him an honorary doctorate 

in 2003 and the University of 

Uansas. The Boston Conservatory gave him an honorary doctorate in 2007. 

Bossard, 61, is a legal assistant at the law firm Turkel Forman Y de la Vega LLP. He formerly covered 

New York theater for the “Cleveland Plain Dealer,” “Backstage” and “Our Town” and currently posts 

video-blog theater reviews on-line. He is a graduate of the University of Dayton. 

He is the son of the late Loretta Bossard and the late Ralph Bossard, both of Cleveland. His father 

owned Bossard's Gulf Service Station in Cleveland.

Nicole Dana and Bart Samuelson will marry Sept. 4, 

2009. Their parents are Jo Conda Dana and Michael Dana 

of Spearfish; and Danielle Banks of Ueystone; and Mr.

Nicole graduated from Spearfish High School in 1998. 

She received her bachelor of science degree in biology 

from Black Hills State University in 2002. In 2005 Nicole 

completed her education at the UNMC College of 

Dentistry in Lincoln, Neb. with a Doctor of Dental 

Surgery degree. She now practices dentistry in Spearfish 

and Rapid City at Dana Dental Arts. 

Bart graduated from Philip High School in 1989. He 

then attended University of South Dakota and received his 

hygiene degree in 1994 and a bachelor of science degree 

in biology in 1998. In 2006, Bart completed his education 

at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, Neb. with 

a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He is now a dentist in 

Rapid City at his practice Black Hills Area Dental.
