the international forest biosecurity conference
will provide a unique opportunity to bring forest
biosecurity issues into global focus. the term
“biosecurity” refers to the exclusion, eradication,
or effective management of established pests to
protect the diverse benefits gained from forests.
hosted by scion, the conference will provide a
forum for forest entomologists, pathologists
and vegetation management scientists, forest
managers and policy makers to share knowledge,
create networks and promote international
actions.
If you are interested in exploring sponsorship opportunities for this conference, please
contact Gordon.thomson@innovatek.co.nz

The Conference will be held in Rotorua, the heart of New Zealand’s production forest industry and
forestry research. As a popular international tourist destination, Rotorua offers a broad range of
activities ranging from cultural tours to active adventures. For more information on Rotorua see
www.rotoruanz.com
numbers are limited so early registration is advised
if you are interested in attending the conference, or require more information, see
www.forestbiosecurity.com
the approximate cost of registration for the five-day conference will be nZ$800 including
conference lunches and dinner. (add 12.5% for goods and services tax).
registration will open in June and can be completed through www.forestbiosecurity.com

the theme of the conference, “forest biosecurity
in a global context”, aims to highlight advances
in forest biosecurity research from around
the world. it will also promote opportunities
for greater cooperation between international
researchers, managers, regulatory authorities and
policy makers, leading to science-based policies
and management decisions that must underpin
biosecurity.
areas where we invite submission of papers
include:
s Pest risk analysis:
• how to quantify risks to forest benefits from
insect pests, diseases and weeds, and the
influence of changes to climate and patterns
of tourism and trade on these risks.
• Economics to underpin decision making in
management of biological invasions.
s New tools and technologies for mitigating
threats from insect pests, diseases and weeds
through:
• identification and closure of pathways.
• improved surveillance.
• tools for pest detection and diagnosis.
• new quarantine treatments (methods for
disinfestation).
s tools and techniques for eradication or
management of forest weeds insect pests and
diseases including:
• pest population ecology including the
ecology of invasions (e.g. spread modelling);
developing links between theoretical
approaches and pest management or
eradication decision making.
• impact models (effects of pests on forest
values) and quantifying economic impacts
from pests.
• Eradication options for insects, weeds,
or diseases including understanding and
mitigating social or environmental impacts
from treatment options.
• management options for established insect
pests, weeds or disease including biological,
chemical, and cultural, and understanding
and mitigating social or environmental
impacts from treatment options.
• novel treatment options e.g. induced
resistance.
s understanding the factors that determine pest
invasiveness and ecosystem resistance and
resilience to pest impacts including:
• links between biodiversity, scale, and
resistance of forests to pests.
• forest health monitoring.
• impacts of climate change on host-pest
relationships.
a key theme of the conference is how science
can underpin more effective biosecurity decision
making. therefore we would like authors to
explain the management relevance of their work
in simple language. we would also encourage
authors to focus on science relating to risks to
the environments or economies from insect pests,
pathogens, or weeds that are increasing in their
range either at local or global scales.
Submitting a Paper
if you are interested in presenting a paper
for oral or poster sessions that aligns with one
of these themes, send a one-page abstract to
libby.stulen@innovatek.co.nz by 4 august 2008.
proceedings of the conference will be produced
and it is intended that papers will be published.
abstracts of papers should be between 250
and 300 words and must include the following
information:title of paper, full name and affiliation of
author(s); five key words; details of paper presenter
(postal address, telephone, fax and e-mail).
Post-conference tours
delegates who wish to make the most of their trip
have the option of attending one of the following
tour options, which focus on forest vegetation
and health management. costs are yet to be
confirmed for these tours. please indicate if you
are interested in receiving more information:
• South Island – Visit forest health and forest
vegetation management experiments. Explore
the impacts of changing land uses in canterbury.
Enjoy guided visits of native forests, spectacular
mount cook, the wild west coast, and an
astronomy tour through the southern skies.
• tasmania – learn about the management of
tasmania’s wet eucalypt forest at the long term
Ecological research site warra (http://www.
warra.com/warra/). Visit world-famous trees,
and wander through a eucalypt canopy on the
airwalk. see phytophthora cinnamomi in native
vegetation, meet a tasmanian devil and enjoy
the local beer!
