MC students end

May 24 and Middle College
students completed the spring at
the May 28 graduation.
Enclosed are the final grades
for the three high school classes.
Grades for college classes will
be available on June 4. Check

Summer school in the
SMUHSD starts June 10; CSM
summer school begins June 17.
The Middle College fall semester

Principal’s Corner

Middle College capped another successful school year on May 28 when 26 students
participated in the Fifteenth Commencement Exercises in the CSM Theater. Kristan Houlet, Demetra
Risner, Kylie Knight-Magpusao, and Natalie Steffen delivered graduation speeches to the audience of
250 family and friends.
Teachers Greg Lance and Michael Clardy praised the students for their hard work through
their years in the Middle College program. The teachers acknowledged five students for scholarships.
Ani Chechopoulos for Excellence in Overall Academic Achievement; Demetra Risner as the “Spirit of
Middle College”; Shayna Lee was the “Outstanding Student in Social Studies”; Jordan Cisneros,
recognized for the “Growth and Perseverance Award”; and, Olga Terets for the Lorraine McLean
Memorial Award for Achievement in English. Chloe Studebaker sang and played a personally-written
song on the guitar.
SMUHSD Superintendent Scott Laurence, CSM President Michael Claire and SMUHSD
Trustee Robert Griffin addressed the graduates.
Since these students are completing their Middle College experience, we hope they're
prepared for the challenges ahead. Many will continue at College of San Mateo, Cañada College and
other community colleges. Others will attend Azusa Pacific, Penn State, San Francisco State, Clark
University in Massachusetts, Hamilton College in New York, UC Santa Cruz, Notre Dame de Namur
and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. We wish them our best and hope they let us know how they're doing.
The seniors gave their internship presentations on May 13-17. The Powerpoint presentation
was the culmination of a year-long internship assignment and the analysis of a problem at the
worksite. Students worked at the following locations: CSM Health Center; CSM Department of
Development and Marketing; San Carlos Flight Center; Neel Riley, PhD., Clinical Neuropsychologist;
Mojo Music Studios; Remarkable Girls; Hillsdale High School; Santa Clara Valley Medical Center;
San Francisco Police Department; Pacific Dental Center; KCSM; George Young, DDS; Mary Meta
Lazarus Child Development Center; The Party Scene Press; Aragon Veterinary Clinic; San Mateo
Democrat Party; Seajay Environmental, LLC; Advanced PC Concepts; Lurkis Family Law; Jerry Hill
for State Senate; and, Ricochet, clothing boutique.
The Middle College office will be open periodically in the summer. If you need to visit, please
call before arriving to ensure that the office is open. Have a safe and relaxing summer!

✔ Summer Reading
Enclosed in this mailing is a summer reading list for junior and
senior English. All new students and students returning to
Middle College must complete the reading and accompanying
assignments by August 13. Summer reading will be the first
major grade in the English classes. All juniors and seniors are
required to read Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katharine
Boo. Go to collegeofsanmateo.edu/middlecollege/summer.asp for
more information.
✔ 2013-14 Calendar
Middle College students begin high school classes on
August 13 from 9am-noon in Bldg. 19, room 121. High school
classes also will be held on August 14-16 from 9am-noon. The
teachers are planning a field trip for either August 14 or 15.
More information will be sent during the summer. College
classes begin on August 19; fall semester ends December 18.
✔ Fall 2013 Applications
Middle College is accepting incoming juniors for Fall 2013.
Applications, accepted on a case-by-case basis, are available
online at our website: www.collegeofsanmateo.edu/middlecollege or
call 574-6101. There is a wait list for incoming seniors.
✔ CRER 121 and 122
All students are required to take and pass CRER 121 and
CRER 122 to meet Middle College graduation requirements.
Students who didn’t pass CRER 121 can take the class during
in the fall. Students can earn one college unit.
✔ CHSPE Registration
The California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) is
offered to students 16 years and older who’d like to earn the
equivalent to a high school diploma. MC students who have
passed the test in the past usually continue their education at
the community college. The summer test is June 15. The
emergency deadline is June 11. Results are mailed in late July.

✔ Seniors plan internships
All seniors (as of August) must contact advisor Mr. Clardy by
June 7 to plan for their internship. Seniors can begin the
assignment in the summer. Seniors are required to put in 24
hours in a career-related field. This experience will be the basis
for the mandatory Senior Project, to be completed prior to
