May 24 and <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

students completed the spring at<br />

the May 28 graduation.<br />

Summer school in the<br />

SMUHSD starts <strong>June</strong> 10; CSM<br />

summer school begins <strong>June</strong> 17.<br />

The <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> fall semester<br />

begins August 13.<br />

Principal’s Corner<br />

<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> capped another successful school year on May 28 when 26 students<br />

participated in the Fifteenth Commencement Exercises in the CSM Theater. Kristan Houlet, Demetra<br />

Risner, Kylie Knight-Magpusao, and Natalie Steffen delivered graduation speeches to the audience <strong>of</strong><br />

250 family and friends.<br />

Teachers Greg Lance and Michael Clardy praised the students for their hard work through<br />

their years in the <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> program. The teachers acknowledged five students for scholarships.<br />

Ani Chechopoulos for Excellence in Overall Academic Achievement; Demetra Risner as the “Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong>”; Shayna Lee was the “Outstanding Student in Social Studies”; Jordan Cisneros,<br />

recognized for the “Growth and Perseverance Award”; and, Olga Terets for the Lorraine McLean<br />

Memorial Award for Achievement in English. Chloe Studebaker sang and played a personally-written<br />

song on the guitar.<br />

SMUHSD Superintendent Scott Laurence, CSM President Michael Claire and SMUHSD<br />

Trustee Robert Griffin addressed the graduates.<br />

Since these students are completing their <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> experience, we hope they're<br />

prepared for the challenges ahead. Many will continue at <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>San</strong> <strong>Mateo</strong>, Cañada <strong>College</strong> and<br />

other community colleges. Others will attend Azusa Pacific, Penn State, <strong>San</strong> Francisco State, Clark<br />

University in Massachusetts, Hamilton <strong>College</strong> in New York, UC <strong>San</strong>ta Cruz, Notre Dame de Namur<br />

and Cal Poly <strong>San</strong> Luis Obispo. We wish them our best and hope they let us know how they're doing.<br />

The seniors gave their internship presentations on May 13-17. The Powerpoint presentation<br />

was the culmination <strong>of</strong> a year-long internship assignment and the analysis <strong>of</strong> a problem at the<br />

worksite. Students worked at the following locations: CSM Health Center; CSM Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Development and Marketing; <strong>San</strong> Carlos Flight Center; Neel Riley, PhD., Clinical Neuropsychologist;<br />

Mojo Music Studios; Remarkable Girls; Hillsdale High School; <strong>San</strong>ta Clara Valley Medical Center;<br />

<strong>San</strong> Francisco Police Department; Pacific Dental Center; KCSM; George Young, DDS; Mary Meta<br />

Lazarus Child Development Center; The Party Scene Press; Aragon Veterinary Clinic; <strong>San</strong> <strong>Mateo</strong><br />

Democrat Party; Seajay Environmental, LLC; Advanced PC Concepts; Lurkis Family Law; Jerry Hill<br />

for State Senate; and, Ricochet, clothing boutique.<br />

The <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice will be open periodically in the summer. If you need to visit, please<br />

call before arriving to ensure that the <strong>of</strong>fice is open. Have a safe and relaxing summer!<br />

✔ Summer Reading<br />

Enclosed in this mailing is a summer reading list for junior and<br />

senior English. All new students and students returning to<br />

<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> must complete the reading and accompanying<br />

assignments by August 13. Summer reading will be the first<br />

major grade in the English classes. All juniors and seniors are<br />

required to read Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katharine<br />

Boo. Go to college<strong>of</strong>sanmateo.edu/middlecollege/summer.asp for<br />

more information.<br />

✔ <strong>2013</strong>-14 Calendar<br />

<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> students begin high school classes on<br />

August 13 from 9am-noon in Bldg. 19, room 121. High school<br />

classes also will be held on August 14-16 from 9am-noon. The<br />

teachers are planning a field trip for either August 14 or 15.<br />

More information will be sent during the summer. <strong>College</strong><br />

classes begin on August 19; fall semester ends December 18.<br />

✔ Fall <strong>2013</strong> Applications<br />

<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> is accepting incoming juniors for Fall <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

Applications, accepted on a case-by-case basis, are available<br />

online at our website: www.college<strong>of</strong>sanmateo.edu/middlecollege or<br />

call 574-6101. There is a wait list for incoming seniors.<br />

✔ CRER 121 and 122<br />

All students are required to take and pass CRER 121 and<br />

CRER 122 to meet <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>College</strong> graduation requirements.<br />

Students who didn’t pass CRER 121 can take the class during<br />

in the fall. Students can earn one college unit.<br />

✔ CHSPE Registration<br />

The California High School Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Exam (CHSPE) is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered to students 16 years and older who’d like to earn the<br />

equivalent to a high school diploma. MC students who have<br />

passed the test in the past usually continue their education at<br />

the community college. The summer test is <strong>June</strong> 15. The<br />

emergency deadline is <strong>June</strong> 11. Results are mailed in late July.<br />

✔ Seniors plan internships<br />

All seniors (as <strong>of</strong> August) must contact advisor Mr. Clardy by<br />

<strong>June</strong> 7 to plan for their internship. Seniors can begin the<br />

assignment in the summer. Seniors are required to put in 24<br />

hours in a career-related field. This experience will be the basis<br />

for the mandatory Senior Project, to be completed prior to<br />
