A Word of Welcome
This is the second issue of the Library
Newsletter and continues our effort to spread
the word about new library services and
resources. We are also beginning a series of
brief articles introducing members of the
Library staff. We hope that the Newsletter will
give you and the entire college community a
better sense of what is happening in the
Library.
Branch Services - http://www.cnr.edu/home/library/dirbranch.htm - Yvonne Hamilton – Co-op City Campus
Intercampus Loan Services: Co-op City will be part of
the new initiative that enables patrons to ask for books
and audiovisual materials (Cassette tapes, DVD‟s and
CD‟s) electronically from any of the six branches of Gill
Library. Students, faculty and staff can now request
item(s) directly from the catalog record. Any item
requested is marked immediately for shipping to Co-op
City without the need for the old intercampus loan forms
which needed to be “filled out legibly and as completely
as possible.”
New Books: The way we order additions to our book
collection is also being done online, with several
enhancing features. “New Additions at Co-op City
Library” since the spring can be accessed from the
homepage, using the “New Books” link. A short list of
new books can also be viewed in the library from our
“New Books Cart” before they are borrowed or before
they rotate off to make room for other new titles.
Electronic Reserves/Interlibrary Loans – Kathleen Mannino, New Rochelle Campus
Automated Interlibrary Loan Service: During
the Fall Semester, Gill Library will launch ILLiad, our
new automated interlibrary loan service. ILLiad provides
fast interlibrary loan and document delivery services in a
user-friendly, web-based format. Best of all, everything
is done electronically; no more paper request forms to
fill out. After creating an initial personal profile,
registered students, along with faculty and staff, can
submit, track, and renew interlibrary loan requests
electronically on or off campus. ILLiad also makes it
possible to receive most photocopies and PDF
documents electronically. Patrons are notified via email
and telephone when a request is ready for pick up at the
Library's circulation desk. Have questions? Please
contact me at extension 5359.
Additionally, any member of the campus community may
also go to the “Suggest a Book” link on the homepage, to
order curriculum-appropriate books and audiovisual
materials for addition to our collections.
Information Literacy Program: This fall, Co-op City will
renew its efforts to initiate successful librarian/faculty
partnerships in the delivery of information literacy on this
Campus. In this endeavor, we will be collaborating with
instructional staff and faculty to provide: 1) First level
general library orientation sessions to all freshmen; and 2)
course-related instruction for classes at different levels and
interests. In addition, the information literacy program at this
Campus will include one-on-one research sessions to
discuss specific research and information needs. Also
promised for this semester, is participation in a series of
Research Paper Workshops organized jointly by the Gill
Library, CNR Learning Support Services and Academic
Computing Departments.
Electronic Reserves: ERes, Gill Library's electronic
reserves system is gaining popularity with faculty members
and instructional staff. ERes is a password-protected
system that enables members of the College community to
access their course reserves pages and materials at any
time from on or off campus. Multiple users have
simultaneous access to the documents that are available in
Adobe's PDF format. Users no longer need to visit the
library to view and/or print reserve articles. Visit Gill
Library's Electronic Reserves (http://eres.cnr.edu/eres). If
you have any questions on how to open a new course
reserve page, please contact me at kmannino@cnr.edu.

Serials/Electronic Resources – Ana Fontoura - New Rochelle Campus
na – New Rochelle Campus
The 2007-2008 academic year brings new and exciting
developments in the Serials and Electronic Resources
Department. These developments are fully integrated with our
current resources and provide enhanced services for all our users.
Here are a few:
Federated Searching with Serials Solutions’ 360 Search
The Electronic Resources Department is working hard on
implementing this new product which will make finding answers
fast! 360 Search allows users to search multiple resources
simultaneously from an easy to use search box. Just as we all use
our favorite search engines, (for example, Google) 360 Search
scans the library‟s resources (all the databases, catalog, and even
selected Internet sites) and presents results to the user in a single
easy to understand result screen. This powerful tool will save time
and bring the user more efficient search results. We look forward
to launching this product by the spring semester.
RefWorks - Citation Management Software
RefWorks is designed to help researchers easily gather,
manage, store and share all types of information as well as
generate citations and bibliographies. Managing references and
creating bibliographies for research papers has always been a
time-consuming, complex task, but RefWorks makes this a
problem of the past. Look for our trial and subscription sometime
this fall.
New and updated Databases:
JSTOR: This database offers researchers the ability to retrieve
high-resolution, scanned images of archived journal issues and
pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated.
The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines. This is a
wonderful addition to the Library‟s resources. However, keep in
mind that JSTOR is not a current content database. There is often
a 1 – 5 year delay in making the current content available in
JSTOR.
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center: Opposing Viewpoints
Resource Center is a database covering today‟s hottest social
issues, from Terrorism to Endangered Species, Stem Cell
Research to Gun Control. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
helps students develop critical-thinking and information literacy
skills by bringing together a variety of information on social issues.
Education Research Complete: Education Research Complete is
the definitive online resource for education research. This massive
file offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full
text education journals. It is a bibliographic and full text database
covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of
education.
CINHAL with Full Text: This database was
upgraded from our previous subscription to include
more full text for those researching the field of health
and nursing.
Coming soon: E-BOOKS!
For more information on this or if you have any other
questions, please feel free to email Ana Fontoura,
Christina E. Blay – New Rochelle Campus
Christina E. Blay has enjoyed working with Gill Library for 19 years, as a student aide, a
part-time employee, a full-time Circulation Staff A ssistant and since 2002 as Circulation
Manager, which gives her the chance to work with students, staff and faculty and the
many student aides she supervises. Christina holds a Master of Education, and her goal
is to establish a school in Ghana, where she originates from. Until then, Christina and
her daughter, A nelese, make their home in New Rochelle. Christina is a certified lay
speaker for the United Methodist Church. Her current project is child evangelism. She
has adopted an orphanage in Nsawam, the Eastern Region of Ghana.
Gail Greene - Brooklyn Campus
Gail Greene is the only full-time Library Assistant at the Brooklyn Branch of the Gill Library.
Her association with The College of New Rochelle started in fall 2000 when she began as a
student. She fell in love with the library and spent so much time there that Professor Freeman
(later known as Professor Terry), Branch Librarian and her „Library as a Research Tool‟
Instructor, suggested that she work in the library as a Work Study Student. She secured that
position in spring 2001 and has been a part of Gill since then.
After graduating with a B.A. Degree with a major in Social Work in 2005, her position was
upgraded to Library Assistant. Gail has been a stalwart employee and supporter of ‘things
library’ and has worked very well with students, instructors and administrative staff. Gail is a
vibrant force in the library and looks out, most importantly, for the academic well-being of the
students. Her colleagues in the library are all very dear to her and she works hard to keep a
collegial and respectful air in the workplace. Gail can always be depended on to be at the
library, particularly in times of crisis.
And, additional good news! She will be starting library school at Long Island University Palmer
School in fall 2007. We wish her all the very best.
