Thirteen of the top 20 titles have US involvement, <strong>and</strong> four are UK productions. The top 20<br />

films collectively took £56 million at the UK box office <strong>and</strong> sold 3.8 million units on DVD.<br />

3.4 Comparison of theatrical <strong>and</strong> DVD revenues<br />

The 185 specialised films released theatrically in 2003 <strong>and</strong> 2004 that featured in rental<br />

<strong>and</strong> retail DVD charts at the time of writing generated £102.6 million in gross box office<br />

revenues. This compares with £104.9 million estimated to have been generated in DVD<br />

rentals <strong>and</strong> sales of the same titles, demonstrating the significance of this increasingly<br />

lucrative link in the value chain.<br />
