We have an almost completely<br />

new Junior High program.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y have some e xtra<br />

minutes in their da y, 2 days<br />

each week of block scheduling,<br />

a choice of electives and<br />

a flex period where they can<br />

get extra help from teachers,<br />

retake or makeup tests, work<br />

on homework, and a new surf<br />

club!<br />

the Family Open House on<br />

Saturday, March 16 from 10<br />

At the Family Open<br />

House, guests of all ages are<br />

gladly welcome to tour the<br />

school’s new location in North<br />

Carlsbad; meet teachers, faculty<br />

members and school par-<br />

ents; and participate in a<br />

number of activities designed<br />

to help them get to know the<br />

school. SWS is located at 1905<br />

Magnolia Avenue, in 16 exclusively<br />

leased classrooms on<br />

the campus of Magnolia<br />

Education Afternoons on<br />

April 24 and May <strong>22</strong> at 3:30<br />

pm are a natural follow-up to<br />

the morning observation, with<br />

a full school tour, participatory<br />

activities, and an introduction<br />

to the school’s faculty.<br />

SWS offers an arts-centered,<br />

developmentally structured<br />

curriculum f or<br />

Nursery/Kindergarten and<br />

Grades 1-8. <strong>The</strong> play-based<br />

Nursery/Kindergarten program<br />

is designed to provide a<br />

gentle, nurturing environment<br />

for children ages three<br />

to six years. Formal academic<br />

work begins in the grade<br />

school, with specialty subjects<br />

including Spanish,<br />

German, handwork (knitting,<br />

crocheting and sewing), outdoor<br />

games, musical instruments,<br />

gardening, and much<br />

more.<br />

Waldorf Education w as<br />

founded in 1919 by Rudolf<br />

Steiner, an Austrian philosopher<br />

and teacher who also<br />

developed biodynamic agriculture.<br />

More than 1,000 Waldorf<br />

schools exist in more than 60<br />

countries around the world.<br />

Waldorf schools are non-sectarian<br />

and non-denominational;<br />

and stri ve to teac h a<br />

respect for nature while<br />

encouraging the development<br />

of the “whole” child: head,<br />
