Embedded Computing
• An embedded system is a special-purpose computer system designed to
perform one or a few dedicated functions, often with real-time computing
constraints – WIKIPEDIA
• Embedded Processing includes both Embedded Control and Embedded
Compute applications. The focus here is on Embedded Computing!
• The different types of embedded computing boards standards are
– PICMG standard boards (PCI, PCIe, cPCI, ATCA, AMC, uTCA,
COMexpress etc.)
– VITA Standard boards (PMC, VME, XMC, VXS, VPX etc.)
– PC 104 consortium (PC104, PC104express, EBX, EPIC etc.)
– Intel Architecture Motherboards (ATX, ITX, mini ITX, Pico ITX, Nano ITX
etc.)
– Computer On Module (ETX, COM, COMexpress)
• Most RISC processor (like OMAP ARM) based computing modules use the
COM or SOM (System On Module) form factor. There is no specific standard
established for the SOM today.
