Copenhagen is a perfect weekend break destination for anyone who wants to<br />
enjoy art, culture, and beautiful architecture. Copenhagen is the capital of<br />
Denmark and it is one of Europe’s most charming cities.<br />
Over the centuries, fishing and trading turned the place into a<br />
prosperous town and in 1343 King Valdemar Atterdag made it the capital of<br />
Denmark.<br />
The city of Copenhagen and the surrounding <strong>are</strong>as have many different<br />
things to offer visitors including museums, art galleries, restaurants, botanical<br />
gardens, the Tivoli Gardens and lots more. 2 It is located about 40<br />
minutes outside the city in a 19 th century villa which is built on a hillside which<br />
slopes downwards to the sea. It has an excellent collection of international contemporary art and various<br />
interesting temporary exhibitions. Also, the Black Diamond, Denmark’s striking Royal Library, is well worth a<br />
visit. 3 The outside of the building is made of glass and marble and it houses a concert hall and<br />
waterfront café. Another building worth visiting while in the city is the new Opera House, which is built on the<br />
waterfront and is a magnificent example of modern architecture.<br />
There is a bright spacious public <strong>are</strong>a where you can enjoy views over the water and inside the building is a<br />
traditional horseshoe-shaped auditorium decorated with warm colours.<br />
A trip to Copenhagen would be incomplete without visiting the Little Mermaid. 5 She was<br />
created in honour of the Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen, who entertained children around the world<br />
with his fairytales. The story of the mermaid who rescued a shipwrecked prince is particularly well-known.<br />
<strong>You</strong> can also easily combine a trip to Denmark with a visit to Sweden. 6 Built in 2000, it is one<br />
of the longest structures in Europe.<br />

Copenhagen is a pretty city with a medieval atmosphere, the houses <strong>are</strong> tall and thin and there <strong>are</strong><br />
plenty of boutiques and coffee shops in the city centre. 7<br />

Scandinavian capitals and there <strong>are</strong> plenty of restaurants to enjoy traditional Danish cuisine. In addition, you<br />
