SPECIES 6
White-winged Duck Cairina scutulata, a globally Endangered species, occurs on ox-bow lakes in the
Upper Chindwin Lowlands. This species has undergone a major decline in other countries in the region and the
Myanmar population is, therefore, of increasing global significance. Photo: Morten Strange/Nature's Niche
Recent survey data indicate that the Critically Endangered Slender-billed Vulture Gyps tenuirostris and
White-rumped Vulture G. bengalensis still occur widely across Chin, Kachin and Shan States. The populations
of these species in Myanmar are of high global conservation significance, particularly because they do not
appear to be affected by the factor(s) responsible for the precipitous decline of vulture populations in the Indian
Sub-continent over the last decade. Photo: U Htin Hla/Saw Moses/BANCA.
