Pruning explained
AS a gereral rule of thumb, if a large-flowered clematis blooms before May it falls into the ‘Light’ pruning category since it will be
flowering on last year’s growth. If it flowers after May it will be flowering on its current year’s growth, so pruning hard in early spring
encourages more flowering stems. By pinching out the leading stems until May, you can encourage even more shoots and, therefore,
more flowers.
NONE
Spring and winter flowering clematis need to be priuned only if they have outgrown their welcome. If this is the case, they should be
pruned immediately after flowering. If dealing with an old, establised specimen, it is best to prune out 50% of old woody stems one
year and repeat the process the following yeat to reinvigorate the plant.
LIGHT
Prune out all dead and weak stems during February or early March. Start at the top and work down until you are pruning just above a
pair of plump healthy buds. Don`t get carried away or you will be cutting out your flowering stems for the current season.
HARD
By far the easiest category, from the base of each plant find the second pair of fresh buds and prune immediately above these.
Usually 30-45cm above the ground. This group are wonderful for growing through large shrubs, climbing roses and trees, where they
will add valuable late-summer colour. They can be tidied up after flowering during autumn or winter, then hard-pruned early the
following spring.
